New Pelican - "An Inch Above Sand" (Stereogum Premiere)
Pelican's fourth full-length What We All Come To Need is their first for Southern Lord (after the Ephemeral EP), though there clearly weren't any hard feelings with their old label: Hydra Head owner/Isis frontman Aaron Turner contributes to the collection. Across its eight tracks, the hardworking L.A.-via-Chicago quartet also gets help from Southern Lord main man, Sunn O)))'s Greg Anderson, along with Ben Verellen (Helms Alee, ex-Harkonen) and the Life & Times/ex-Shiner player Allen Epley, who adds vocals (yes, vocals) to closer "Final Breath." Even with the extra hands/unexpected vocal cords, you're getting what you'd expect from the band -- dynamically expansive, mathy, triumphant, and lightly melancholic guitar-powered post-metal -- though in a denser, more varied form than in the past. Yeah, I never really got the hang-up on Pelican's drumming. It's simple, sure, but it never stood out as either exemplary or bad. it's just kind of there to keep the pace. Like the song, though

I have to agree on the drumming...though I was shocked to see it called out - and how - on Pitchfork (especially since who ever sees more than passing mention of drummers in reviews?). The disconnect between the drummer and the rest of the guys was even more apparent live though, in my one experience.

In complete agreement with the drumming issue. it was brutally apparent when he went into the double kicks... tempo even slowed down. dumb.
