New Pissed Jeans - "Dream Smotherer" (Stereogum Premiere)

A couple Octobers ago I spoke with Pissed Jeans frontman Matt Korvette about his job as a claims adjuster. When I asked him what the typical adjuster's like, he told me:

In a 40 hour work-week, the average adjuster is expected to complete 50-60 hours worth of work, so naturally there is a lot of burn-out and unhinging going on. I've seen so many conversations between adjusters and inanimate objects, people just screaming at fax machines or punching the printer. One lady literally smashed her keyboard to pieces, that's not just an internet myth, I've seen it happen with my own eyes.

I bring this up because "Dream Smotherer," from the Pennsylvania noise-rock quartet's blistering third album King Of Jeans, is a working man's anthem that deals with losing your days stacking papers (putting on a plastic smile with a buttoned shirt), but managing to keep your nights and dreams: "I will help you make ends meet
/ If you let me get some sleep
." Sounds sentimental, but after you filter these thoughts through a Jesus Lizard snarl, it becomes something quite different.

Fact is, amid so much indie navel-gazing, we need more blue-collar rock like this.

King Of Jeans is out 8/18 via Sup Pop. If you pre-order it, you'll also get a copy of Pissed Jeans' set from Sup Pop 20.

It's true. My dad is and has been an insurance adjuster. It's soul-sucking and excruciating in ways you wouldn't believe.

I really loved Hope For Men when it came out and I'm really digging King Of Jeans. More songs about baldness, please.
