New Raveonettes - "Suicide"

thubmnail icon: New Raveonettes - "Suicide"

The Raveonettes fourth album In And Out Of Control finds the Danish duo in a particularly poppy mood musically, while pushing the lyrical content into darker corners. As the band's male half Sune Rose Wagner put it:

It's a strange mixture of modern and old, dark and happy, it's about rape, violence, lost love, suicide, not giving a shit about what other people think of you and most importantly being mad and angelic!

It's wrapped in a dusky, upbeat package. You get nostalgia in intensive care via "Last Dance." The fuzzy, absolutely chirpy "Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed)" with its "you never forget / those fuckers stay in your head" refrain. A slow-dance torch-song fragment, "Oh, I Buried You Today." And, see for instance, a "little runaway girl"'s cathartic trip the Brooklyn Bridge in "Suicide." Every time the water splashes an angel gets its wings, or something.

The Raveonettes - "Suicide" (MP3)

In And Out Of Control is out 10/6 via Vice.

The music is fantastic, which is what I've come to expect from Sune. However, I think working with a Danish producer allowed some questionable lyrics to sneak onto the album, at least from the songs I've heard.

Should be a pretty good album though.

I really like the demo they have floating around, "Last Dance". I hope it'll be on their new album. As for this song, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

The Raveonettes have been one of my favorite bands for a long time. Not exactly sure about the first single from "In & Out Of Control", but I am often left feeling that way about lead singles. I'm sure it'll grow on me in its proper context.

Good song! The melody's great except for the delivery of the chorus.. it's sort of like Ace of Base. eww. Still love love love The Raveonettes though

sune is the most arrogant man in indie pop right now. at first some of the narcissism seems ironic, charming, and cute; best band in the world rhetoric and all that, very haha. then you realize he isn't kidding. someone should disabuse him of the notion that his band is of any consequence whatsover...a 2000's footnote at best. the song is fine. nothing more, nothing less. like all the rest of their songs.

This "Suicide" song is just too poppy for my own taste. it just seems like one can write a really good song without having to use any profanity in it. Remember "Attack Of The Ghost Riders"?

Best song on a great album. The poppier sound/darker lyrics thing works for the most part....
