New RJD2 - "Games You Can Win" (Feat. Kenna)

thubmnail icon: New RJD2 - "Games You Can Win" (Feat. Kenna)

For those of you who don't find Postal Service or Owl City satisfyingly soulful enough, there's always this new collaboration between RJD2 and Ethiopian-born Virginia Beach-raised Malcolm Gladwell-approved vocalist/keyboardist Kenna. "Games You Can Win" appears on the mad man's forthcoming full-length The Colossus, the first since 2007's The Third Hand.

The Colossus is out 1/19 via RJD2's own RJ's Electrical Connections.

brando,
comparing Postal Service, Owl City, and RJD2 is reeeeeeally a stretch...
Obviously, the closest two would be Owl City and Postal (which i know everyone wants to point out these days, especially in the vocals department)...but truthfully, they're not a whole lot a like. Postal (Tamborello) does a ton more with sampling, creating his own tasteful yet gritty tones, more intricate beat sequencing, etc than Owl dude. Owl city is cookie-cutter sugary teeny bop shit that doesn't vary much from song to song, offering a computer generated sheen, some pepperings of autotuning, and generic synth tones anyone can grab from plug-in presets.
RJD2 is so different, coming from more of a funky, hip-hop DNA...
I understand you meant this he is more soulful than the other two but why even montion them?

If you guys think that the Postal Service, Owl City, and RJD2 are the only people to make synthy pop with samples incorporated, then you really need to get out and listen to more music...

sorry for the novel. xoxo

ArrJayDeeShmoo, you're trying way to hard to denigrate a guy who is actually making decent music. His songs don't sound alike, nor am I really convinced that playful lyrics and upbeat melodies make for sugary crap. The indy fanboys will do anything to convince us otherwise, though.

sounds like his intention wasn't so much to denigrate Owl town, as much as it was to simply state that it's a little narrow-minded of people and blogs like this to keep comparing the two(whether you like either's music or not) ...and then espcially throwing RJD2 in the mix.

i have to agree with him...i have nothing against playful lyrics and upbeat melodies. i'm just not into trite lyrics or overused, predictable progressions and melodies. no hard feelings, firefly...go "get a thousand hugs from ten thousand lightening bugs". isnt that a lyric from one of those decent songs you speak of?

Wait, I sincerely can't figure out why you mention The Postal Service and Owl City. I don't get it...Are you saying that RJD2 sounds like those bands? If that's true, wow, Stereogum. You're slippin'....I can't even call that lazy. It's just inaccurate.
