New Tamaryn - "Mild Confusion"

thubmnail icon: New Tamaryn - "Mild Confusion"

On "Mild Confusion" downcast San Francisco/New York group Tamaryn make like Siouxie Sioux singing over a heavily warped, all-consuming Dead Can Dance (or non-warped My Bloody Valentine) backing track. The quartet stick to the dark, thickly atmospheric feel across any number of songs, but the sounds collide most daringly (and less Jarboe-ly) on this one. I'm hoping they continue twisting things into this frigid aural syrup. (Note: With Wild Nothing, Glasser, and Bat For Lashes on the mind, 2009 is definitely going out on a Kate Bush push.)

The fact that there's a rare reference to my favorite band, Dead Can Dance, made me download this.

Saw Tamaryn open for Secret Machines last year in SF. Had never heard them before but they blew me away. Looking forward to the full length.

I love Tamaryn. She has guts, integrity, a real sense of poetry and a beautiful voice. For the record, I also think that it's unfair to constantly compare female artists to Kate Bush (or the other usual suspects - Björk, PJ Harvey and Tori Amos). These ladies have a lot going on in their own right. They also have plenty of other influences, many of them not even female.

For a minute there, I thought it was a cover of Tom Petty...
