New Voxtrot - "Trepanation Party"

thubmnail icon: New Voxtrot - "Trepanation Party"

Back in '06 Voxtrot stormed out of Austin with two memorable EPs of concise, soft and warm indie pop. The next year they put out a less memorable full-length, and subsequently clammed up, seeming to be alright with being forgotten by the internet-music hype circus for these past two years. Until today. Because today is the Monday where the world's attention is turning toward Voxtrot's hometown, and they've cooked up something with another Austinite and are giving it away for free. Lead singer Ramesh Srivastava posted this note:

Dear World,

Things have been rather quiet round the Voxtrot camp these last two
years. Nonetheless, we are thrilled to be reentering the musical minds
of you and your loved ones. During the week of the South By Southwest
Music Festival, we will be performing two concerts. These will coincide
with the premier of a new song, which was recorded and mixed with Jim
Eno [Spoon] at his studio in Austin..

"Trepanation Party," with its turn away from Belle & Sebastian's hop and toward '80s-redolent, icily glum synths that hit closer to the Cure, is this new song. Jim Eno's producing, so the drums sound good (and get a few metaphorical references in the lyrics):

Voxtrot - "Trepanation Party" (MP3)

There's more to Ramesh's note, aimed at those wanting Voxtrot to account for their absence:

Regarding our absence, sometimes one needs to disappear in order to regroup; situations change and human beings are swept here and there by the marvelous ebb and flow of culture.

And so, there can be only this: a return to a love of music.

Love,
Ramesh

Someone's feeling mushy. Sounds like there will be more soon.

I wouldn't say their album was less than memorable. The songs are still in periodic rotation on my ipod. Nice new tune.

3 memorable EPs! Don't forget "Your Biggest Fan."

I dunno, that album they released was pretty bland. Their EPs seemed more exuberant and exciting.

It's a solid track. Perhaps a bit too long though.

This new track is hot. I enjoyed their debut album quite a bit. Required a few listens to truly appreciate it, but definitely worth it. One of the few bands that I listen to the lyrics to in entirety.

It's not bad. Not as epic as some of the songs on Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, Wives or Raised By Wolves but it'll do. I'm happy they're making music again though!

Gee. Guys you are going down the wrong way of the 80s! Go back to The Smiths and Belle & Sebastian!

I'm not feeling the '86 vibe here.

What the hell is going on with bands making music like it was 1985? This sounds nothing like Voxtrot, it sounds like the Cure. Yeah Yeah Yeahs did the same thing with their new album, its like a time warp. these bands do know how much the 80's sucked... right???

It was great until the singing came in. His voice and this song don't gel for me. Sounds like a slapdash remix. I'm not saying that Ramesh or the band is bad, but this does not sound like the right move for them. I want to love this... I mean Jim Eno producing, 80's synths...but the parts don't fit right some how. Oh, well at least the new Phoenix album is worthy of heavy rotation.

I'm a huge huge Voxtrot fan but this song is just... meh. I like the lyrics (which is the best part of Voxtrot's music) but the synth just sounds bland. I had a feeling if Voxtrot ever resurfaced something like this would happen. Oh well....

you guys are such bandwagons. always complaining about something. i liked the song. it's a good song. get over it. stick to your fall out boy and your good charlotte and leave voxtrot out of your mtv little world

I obsessively read the Stereogum forums, but I've always been self-conscious about posting on them...

until I got drunk a few hours ago. and now "The Warmest Part of the Winter" has come up on shuffle, and I can't help but think about that time I snuck out of my house when I was 15 (through the window!) to go on a completely innocuous walk with the girl i was (unrequitedly) in love with, and how this inexplicably awful tune is slowly destroying all my cherished memories. and its been less than three years! it's not time for retrospective necrophilia!

I absolutly loved voxtrot's old sound. The music in this new song is completly diffrent. The lead singer sounds completly diffrent. I miss voxtrots old sound. It made me think of the trees, the sun, and beauty. This new song makes me think of coke and the cure... (The cure were an amazing band, but if I wanted to listen to them I would have turned them on. I liked voxtrot because they were so diffrent.)
