Nickel Creek Break Up

Via nickelcreek.com.

Dearest Listener,
After seven years of extensive touring in support of three records (seventeen years as a band), we've decided to take a break of indefinite length at the end of 2007 to preserve the environment we've sought so hard to create and to pursue other interests. It has been a pleasure to write, record, and perform for you through the years and we'd like to heartily thank you for your invaluable contribution to our musical lives.

Yours,

Nickel Creek
(Sean, Sara, and Chris)

They never did get the attention they deserved outside the bluegress circuit (they were pretty poppy!), but the young trio always blew me away at Bonnaroo. They did some amazing covers over the years too. Here's my fave:

Nickel Creek - "Spit On A Stranger" (MP3)

From this year's 'Roo:

UPDATE: You can stream Chris Thile's new solo album at CMT.com. He covers the Strokes and the White Stripes.

According to his MySpace, Chris's new band's official site is lovesalittleoutofmypricerangewhatelseveyagot.com. That's either a joke, or website that's not built yet. But either way, it's today's URL of the day.

I never got it. I really tried to, I did. But I was never able to like Nickle Creek. And I hate that cover of Spit on a Stranger. But good luck to them, they seem like a talented bunch of young folk and I'm sure they'll do fine elsewhere

I could never get into them either. At the same time though I respect the hell out of them for some reason.

What's up with seventeen years as a band and only three records??

This is the best news I've heard all day. Apparently, there is a God.

Ouch. Why does no one like Nickel Creek? Chris Thile is the reason i play the mandolin. If you have ever seen them live, it is pretty clear that Chris is a genius.

The only thing worse than their cover of Spit on a Stranger is when I played the Pavement version for some friends and they said, "Oh, they're covering Nickel Creek."

oooh no. i'm not remotely into country or bluegrass, but 'why should the fire die?' was one of my top albums of 2005. oooh no.

They were actually one of the best shows I've ever seen. They unplugged and played acoustic, no microphones or anything. Good stuff. Badass cover of "Where It's At" too.

I saw them live at HOB last year, and they were awesome and I am a fan, but not a fan-atic. They did a cover of Britney's "Toxic" and it brought the house down. Best.

"The Lighthouse's Tale" is one of the most emotionally-charged songs ever for me...it was the last song I heard before I learned that my dad had passed away.

Sad to see Nickel Creek break-up. Especially since they're one of the few local San Diego bands that've been recognized. Not enough recognition as far as I'm concerned.

Glad I got to see that violin, fiddle, mandolin-playing in person, yes I am.

There's a difference between "taking a break" and "breaking up." Nickel Creek is doing the former.

From Billboard.com:
"If we were to go in and do more writing, we might be in danger of forcing that process," he continues. "It's always been so natural, but lately it hasn't been quite as natural and we're running the risk of actually having to break up. We would rather leave it for a while, while it's still intact and healthy. We want to tell people about it now to dispel rumors and so that our fans aren't taken by surprise."

Sad to say Danny Wazworth, but it was so. The friends happened to be MIT physics grad students. Does that make it any more believable?

Did a feature on these guys last year for Paste. Exceptionally gracious with instrumental chops to burn. And to hear Thile at Largo in LA playing his 4-part arrangement (each part clocking in around 6 mins.) of a classical Bach fugue next to The Strokes and Dylan's "Masters of War"—amazing. I'm supremely bummed to hear they've split, but they'll each do just fine.

As children they grew up together playing music as a passion. Definitely created their own sound of Americana. (that appeals to most that actually know what talent is) If you never got it, You never will. To those of us that did, we hope they will continue to grow.

This is the worst news of any variety for...well, probably ever. Nickel Creek and Radiohead are the two only truly original and brilliant bands in the world. This really sucks. Damn.

I absolutely love how you people are picking, of all things, on a throwaway cover of a Pavement tune off their second album, and ignoring the immense talent of each one of the three members of the band that's apparent in just about every other track on their albums.

Go on, listen to them rip up "House of Tom Bombadil" and tell me their breakup doesn't bug you at least a little bit.

I can't stand nickel creek. My fiancee is seriously obsesses with that stupid Chris Thile guy. Seriously she was upset cause she missed thier concert cause it was my birthday and she couldn't go "drool over Thile"

no-one who doesnt like them seem to actually give a proper reason. whether you like the or not these guys are the most unique, intelligent and blindingly talented band in the world at the moment. but as they say, its on only farewell for now :)

PA you're an ass. its their freaking farewell tour. you'll have plenty more birthdays. surely you can allow your wife to see one concert? there would have been time for your yearly screw after the gig.

I hate that Nickel Creek has decided to call it quits. They put out a lot of excellent music and they will be sorely missed by their fans. I do hope they come back some day though. Sara, Chris, Sean, WE WILL MISS YOU! Bon voyage!

I saw Nickel Creek in a small theater here in Harrisonburg, VA several years ago. They were fantastic and the show was perfect. What's to get about Nickel Creek? Either you like the music or not. Sad to see you guys leaving and hope you will form again.
