Petra Haden's Closing Credits For An American Crime

Maybe you've heard about the Tommy Haver-directed film An American Crime: Catherine Keener and our tag of the day Ellen Page, and tells the true crime story of the torture and murder of Sylvia Likens (Page) by Gertrude Baniszewski (Keener) in Indianapolis in the '60s. No? Watch the trailer for a quick refresher. For the film's closing credits cover queen Petra Haden collaborated with the composer Alan Ari Lazar, who overlapped 20+ tracks of her voice to create a chilling but meditative tapestry. The eerie calm after the eerier storm.

Now that's some creepy choir-of-one stuff, especially considering the context.

An American Crime premiered at Sundance and will show up on Showtime this year.

"The most terrible crime ever committed in the state of Indiana." Sounds intense: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvia_Likens

That's a fantastic track. Hope that Petra can get together enough of that decent material to make Charlie proud. Did anyone care for that dog? Or was that a wasted effort? I know I thought it was garbage. Now that Petra is concentrating on other genres she might find something that fits.

Brings back memories of reading the fictionalized account of the event. Book's called Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum. Most disturbing book I've ever read.

I watched this movie, and I have never cried so much in my life... I will have a hard time watching Keener play in another movie after this. It was just hard to believe anyone would let this happen and not say a word. They are just as sick as the people doing the crime.

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

The Bergen trio Ungdomskulen play proggy post punk, mixing chops and hooks with a sense of humor. But they don't sound like Primus. When I was in Norway a couple years ago, "Ungdomskulen" seemed to be on everybody's lips (or...

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt

It's been some time since we learned Modern Guilt, Beck Hansen's eighth album, would be some sort of psych rock minimalist '60s trip with Danger Mouse. Since then, we've gotten a look at the old-school jazz/Blue Note-style cover art and...
