Remastered Songs About Buildings And Food

Rhino is reissuing the entire Talking Heads' catalog as dualdiscs: Remastered audio and rarities on the CD side, 5.1 Surround Sound (do any of you use this, or is this for rich old people?), lyrics, photos, etc... on the DVD.

The the e-card is previewing versions of "Burning Down The House," "And She Was," and "Psycho Killer."

But not this way cooler early demo (not part of the reissues):

Talking Heads - "Psycho Killer (Take 1)" (MP3 Link Expired)

I've heard "Yoshimi" in 5.1, and it's pretty damn cool. But I'm not sold on the necessity of surround sound for all my albums.

I have a nice 5.1 surround sound setup in my dorm room and have just received Flaming Lips' "The Soft Bulletin" in 5.1 and it sounds amazing!

Some albums obviously sound great in 5.1, like Dark Side of the Moon. I checked out The Downward Spiral in 5.1 thinking it would be interesting how it was handled, but it was actually not that great. 5.1 usually shows off the complexity of an album, but some sound very simple being spreading out over five speakers.

I could see the awesomeness of the Flaming Lips in 5.1.

If we're all logging our votes for a Stereogum report to the Gods of music, then no, I haven't really been involved with the 5.1 yet...but me love me some Talking Heads. Yes, yes me do.

The discs are worth it for the stereo remastering alone. The difference between the old shitty cds that were on the market and the newly remastered discs is astounding. It's like hearing them for the first time. The 5.1 mixes are icing on the cake (and they're fucking amazing as well).

lots of higher end cars have DVD-Audio players now. My Acura TL has it. The surround sound system was developed with the help of producer/engineer Elliot Scheiner, who also did the surround sound mix for The Flaming Lips' yoshimi album. So it sounds just about perfect in the car.

This is what was released as Brick correct? But now they're releasing each seperately?

Rob:

These are the same as the Brick releases, yes. I have heard a number of CD players won't play the dualdisc releases. Rhino is also throwing the records on iTunes, if you just want some extra tracks, and despite the compression the remasters do sound better even if you buy them there.

Brick yes, and they will breakout as solo releases as well.

Dual disc is one side CD and the flip side is the DVD-AUDIO. So the CD side will be compliant with any CD player. It was originally going to be a dual layer technology, but they couldn't get it to work 100% with "legacy" players.

The 5.1 mixes were done by Jerry Harrison as well as the remasters of the 2 track audio on the CD side.

I got the brick for Christmas. Insanely fucking good. And the video performance of "I Feel It In My Heart" on the '77 DVD side is great. Definitely get them.

I haven't gotten around to listening to the last three albums (understandably).
