Rhymefest Samples The Strokes

Read a number of negative reviews for Rhymefest's major label debut, but Blue Collar has its moments. Kanye's featured on a few tracks (Rhymefest co-wrote "Jesus Walks"), and there's a standout cameo from the late ODB on a fun hip-hop version of "Build Me Up Buttercup" (Dirt McGirt warbles the chorus in his sloppy off-key drawl, and like all great Ol' Dirty songs it's hilarious). Elsewhere, the Chicago rapper and producer Mark Ronson borrow the familiar hook from Harry Nilsson's "One" and digitally manipulate the Strokes' "Someday" riff for a funny meditation on payin' da bills.

Rhymefest - "Devil's Pie" (MP3)

"I'm ahead of my time/But behind on my rent ... Asked Kanye for money/Just to pay for my gas bill."

It also borrows from "Devil's Pie" from D'Angelo's Voodoo album.

This particular remix is WAY old! I have a version of this from the Mark Ronson: The Fuzz Mixtape CD back in 2004 (maybe even 2003???) before Mark Ronson's solo album came out. The track is called "Some D" and yah, its The Strokes with D'Angelo's "Devil's Pie" track. Artist info on my song also says Saigon is on it too, I think he raps at the end of it, or maybe its Rhymefest... not sure... Surprised to see it resurfacing ages later...

I liked the mix of Devil's Pie on the Star Is Born Mixtape Vol 1 more than the album version they ended up using -- in fact it was my favorite track on that. That version had a completely different chorus. Wonder why they changed it....

I've been listening to Blue Collar for a couple of days now. I really dig it. Oddly enough, his throwback style sounds fresh with all of the lame monotonous hip-pop stuff on the radio lately.

the original version of this song had saigon with the verse, and it was much better.

I wonder why Mark Ronson decided to ditch saigon and give this track to rhymefest, seems like a messed up move, Saigons verse was SICK!

check it out on the mark ronson mixtape from years ago.
