Scarlett Johansson Covers The Cure

thumbnail icon: Scarlett Johansson Covers The Cure

In a new seven-song live session, ScarJo supplements her prolonged assault on the Tom Waits songbook with a take on the Cure's "Boys Don't Cry." Buyer beware: It's an iTunes exclusive, so the curiosity click will cost you a dollar. Not sure who's backing her on the session, and although it's probably some variant of the group of Sitek All-Stars that brought that soundbite-friendly "cough medicine/tinkerbell" vibe to the LP, Scarlett's "Boys" has less in common with TVOTR's lushness than with the Doors' modal meandering. This is the end, beautiful friend. Available here.

Guess I'm the only one around here..but I actually kinda liked the album. It's a nice listen in small doses.

Scarlett may not have the greatest voice..but she has an interesting delivery style at times. Plus...come on. We're indie rock fans -- when did we start caring whether singers have traditionally good voices?

And that production...

there's some forward thinking for you. don't you mean "bitch, get down and suck this dick," or something else more caveman-esque?

Yea, but this is Stereogum, so it's automatically ironic (thus hipseterish [did I make a new word?]) to act in such a manner.

"indie rock" or not... she just sounds completely soulless when she sings. I don't at all like her voice, and maybe that's what makes her so "special" doing her music thing.
sorry. just seems like another wealthy actor trying to do music because they have the money/connections, etc. fair enough. just don't like her sound at all.

but really, all she's going to do is cover songs?

As far as the album goes - the songs are great and the vocals are good enough, what kills it for me it for me is the production! The so-called indie genius TVOTR guy blew it with his "tinkerbell on cough medicine" B.S. It was purposely produced in it's noisy almost sloppy fashion for the sake of being indie-cool but it really hurts the songs. Seriously, remove the droning hum from "Falling Down" and I could love it so much more.

prissy? nah. it's just, though you've been "blessed with a vagina," you sound like a ghetto idiot, so i felt like commenting on that.

what i think most critics of her really want to say, but are afraid to for whatever reason, is that she sounds like a d list hope sandoval.

how dare you compare her to even a d-rate hope sandoval! more like z-rate. or not even in the same ballpark.

it hurt me to type it, but it's true. i love hope, and the reason that she is special is the reason why scarlett is so pedestrian, but they sing with similar style. scarlett of course neuters this style, but she is definitely emulating it...

let's focus on the babe factor- don't be so P.C. people. Where you actually looking to Scar Jo for music inspiration? Get over it- and get honest about why you care. She's one of the finest working women in show business.

Man, remember when it was socially acceptable to be really good at just one thing? There were a few special multitalented souls who could dance, sing, and act, but for the most part, actors acted, musicians played instruments to accompany singers who sang songs that songwriters wrote, athletes played sports, clothing labels bore the names of fashion designers, and perfumes bore the names of perfumiers. These days it isn't enough to be amazing in one area - you've got to do it all. You've got to get back from the overseas tour for your latest album in time to be at the Hollywood premiere of your new movie and then dash over to New York to promote your new clothing line during Fashion Week. And heaven forbid you should slack off and get caught lip-synching onstage. . . . Be careful, Scarlett. Better to be remembered as a brilliant actress than to be forgotten as a jack-of-all-trades.

1. Some of the posts you assume are by boys are probably by women.

2. If you want to hate somebody for making women look bad, consider scarlet johannson. She just took the words of one of the century's most beloved and respected poet/artists's and converted them into accesories for her tits. She had no business touching his stuff, she doesn;t live on the same planet he does. The arrogance is astounding, and the hate is completely to be expected.
