Solange Covers Dirty Projectors
From the moment it was heard in its live pre-Bitte Orca form, folks were comparing "Stillness Is The Move," aka the no. 1 song in Brooklyn, to Mariah Carey. (And, as a helpful full-disclosure, in the press release I wrote for the record I said the song's "ready for popular hip-hop radio, making the same gesture as recent work by Lil Wayne and Kanye West, albeit from the opposite side of culture.") So, no, it's not surprising Solange Knowles -- supposedly responsible for getting Jay-Z and her sister out to see Grizzly Bear -- went and did a laid-back smooth cover of it. Talking to Dave Longstreth early on about the track he said he'd love to see the song eventually make its way onto Hot 97: The original could easily crossover, yeah, but as far as removing genre limitations go, that dream feels that much more attainable in Solange's hands.

The sample is from Dre, but Dre took it from Soul Mann & The Brothers' cover of Isaac Hayes' "Bumpy's Lament." Hayes' song features an organ, but SM&TB rendered it with the guitar and xylophone that you hear in Dre's version.

And after some further investigation, it does seem to actually use the instrumental of the radio remix of Erykah Badu's Bag Lady which sampled Xxplosive. You can tell from the way both songs start off.
In other words it's a cover of a Dirty Projector's song that also samples a remix of an Erykah Badu song which sampled a Dr Dre song which sampled a song by Soul Mann & The Brothers which was a cover of an Issac Hayes song. Recycling abound!

I think that means she's the younger sibling who will always be overshadowed by the older one. Which in the Belushis' case is totally justified. Less so with Solange.

Solange's version is just slightly less grating and irritating than the original. If you wanna make some Mariah Carey shit, Longstreth, just make some Mariah shit and stop shrouding it in dog whistle harmonies, awkward rhythms and disjointed melodies.
If you really wanna listen to awful, modern R'n'B, just listen to it. You don't have to hide your 'Emancipation of Mimi' CD (what are those?) inside of a Lou Reed jewel case.

You've just kind of missed the point of DIrty Projectors' Bitte Orca. In the title it is about juxtaposing smooth and harsh textures, mixing together genres and emotion within a record and within the songs themselves. It's a pretty weird statement to say they should write either all out pop songs or weird avant rock, but nothing in between. if it's grating for most people that's fine but the point is to extend and blur the barriers between everything DPs are influenced by

but we're still ignoring one of the best r&b tracks of 09 that never was: grizzy bear's foreground. the strongwriting is strong but the version on the cd is a bit boring. its one of the most soulless renditions of what is probably one of their best songs. someone should cover that song, like harold melvin & the blue notes circa 1972. or michael mcdonald.

Meh.... Gets boring because it never changes. If you're gonna be repetitive, either give me some minimalism or make it interesting. Unlike the DP version, her's is the same thing for four and a half minutes. The beat isn't that good that I care to listen to it that long.
