Stereogum Hearts Paris

Speaking of Lou Reed's cameo as a Raconteur (OK, we weren't, but if we were...), there's another bit of White Light/White Heat-related news to share. I remember the first time I heard the title track of John Cale's Paris 1919. It made such an impression on me, I still recall that the MP3 came via Black Yellow Black (Thanks Cory!). Cale's masterpiece recently got an expanded reissue, and Pitchfork's Matthew Murphy is as enamored as I am.

John Cale
Paris 1919

[Reprise; 1973; r: WEA International; 2006]
Rating: 9.5

John Cale's 1973 album Paris 1919 has long been justly celebrated as the most accessible and most purely beautiful record of his storied, multi-faceted career. And despite the album's abiding eccentricities-- the literary and historical allusions, posh orchestration, and abstruse lyricism-- it has often seemed to be Cale's most personal and revealing work as well, a deeply felt meditation on loss, dislocation, and introspective yearning. For this lavish new re-mastered edition, Rhino UK has unearthed 11 previously unreleased rehearsals and alternate takes, including one completed outtake, "Burned Out Affair", not included on the original album. This wealth of additional material nearly triples the running length of the original, and provides fascinating new insight into the deliberative construction of Cale's still-vibrant masterpiece.

Buy it! You won't regret it.

YEAH! Definitely one of my top ten of all time albums. I remember hearing it for the first time in the middle of the stinking San Joaquin Valley in California in the summer of 1994.

Good call, Scott! This is a great record -- I was totally obsessed with it *again* earlier this summer. Nerd that I am, I was thrilled to find a copy on vinyl a few weeks ago... (;

one of my favorite records of all time as well... i know it's blasphemy, but i prefer some of John's solo work to a lot of VU's work...

i saw this re-issue at the record store over the weekend, was the first i'd heard about it. hopefully the re-issue gets a vinyl treatment.

Agreed, fantastic album! And I don't thinks its blasphemous to dig Cale's solo work over some of the VU catalog, which after all, technically includes the awful Squeeze.

"A Child's Christmas In Wales" is the shit.

And yeah, duh, it's not like Cory's dead or nuthin', I just had drinks with the dude last month.

does no one else think the remasters are SHITE compared to the original versions? it sounds like some nob head who thinks Cale is only good in the dream syndicate has tried to make Paris 1919 sound just like that. i've got massive massive amounts of time for pretty much most of what john cale's done, but the only good thing about this remastered re-release is the extra tracks... i find it frankly bizarre. anyone have any thoughts on this?
