Stream The Dodos' Time To Die
So, the Dodos' new album leaked. Two months early. Of course it did. We don't have to be coy about it because they're the ones telling us, and are hoping instead of grabbing it you'll visit their new album mini-site which features a 320kbps full-album stream, pre-order links, a free MP3, and a little video message to you, the honorable fan. Also they're bumping up the digital release date to cut losses: Time To Die will be available at the Amazon MP3 store on 7/28 exclusively for a week, then at all the other digital retailers, and that first day the album's gonna be really cheap (like Friendly Deals cheap). Mediocre effort. This band is no Shins, they cannot work with a producer like Phil Ek. They need a more raw sound, but the main reason the new album is very mediocre is that they do not know how to write good songs and melodies.

Tru. Visiter wore thin pretty quickly for me, but then I'm not really digging this lo-fi acoustic noise stuff of late. This sounds like a band that actually cares now, and that, in turn, makes me care. "Fables" has been on repeat at my desk all afternoon.

How I love the Dodos and how vocal I am about it! Alas, I have to sadly concur with the previous comments. I already had a sense of foreboding when I saw them live twice (once in Ottawa, once in Montreal): gone was the chair, the rotation of guitars, the reverb-soaked mic and the trash can and in came the awkward. Playing the new songs alongside the older ones made the contrast between the material all the more stark. There's something big missing from the album; I can't quite pinpoint it (is it the glossier production? is it that the songs are more pop, straightforward and a tad predictable? that the drums aren't as present and powerful? or all of the above?) but it's definitely not as engaging, dynamic, explorative, bluesy, and intimate as the first two were. Even Meric's beautiful voice is hidden in the mêlée. Regardless, I still love and support them and I hope they will recapture that magical and manic energy despite the setback of the new set-up and the new material.

Visiter turned me into a follower of The Dodos and Fables sounds just as good as their previous work. I will definitely check this album out by today. Sigh...if only I had caught them at the echo earlier this year...

I thought it was ok, though it's no Visiter. The drumming doesn't feel as interesting or innovative as their previous material and there is no slide guitar (that I could detect at least!), which is a big miss in my opinion. It does, as some have said, sound a bit more pop, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing, indeed the album is very melodious, and in many ways the album feels more coherent than Visiter, which was often tough to listen to all the way through.
