SXSW: Thursday Featured Showcases

Dinner time in Austin, time to munch tacos and figure the night sched. As the picture suggests, tonight's the night for Jens Lekman fans: y'all have two chances to catch the Swedish troubadour (Emo's at 8PM, Mohawk at midnight). For those looking for relatively veteran greats, the only choice is Yo La Tengo and My Morning Jacket (sure to be showing off their Evil Urges) at Austin Music Hall. If your legs are already hurting, you can one-stop shop at the Mohawk Patio, where the Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguwar/Dead Oceans crew bring the night's most stacked lineup (culminating in a sure to be stonerific Black Mountain set at 1AM). Us, we're going to see the Lou Reed tribute and then off to check the newly black-clad Islands crew work through the great forthcoming LP The Arm's Way. Or there's Mark Kozelek in a church, or the awesome El Guincho at 1AM, or Vice's Dark Meat covering Stooges songs or ... actually, just jump.

I am absolutely blown away by My Morning jacket tonite.
I was a pretty big fan before but this cements it.
I know its a bold statement, but My Morning jacket are America's Best Band.
No one can touch them live.

I'm enjoying all these SxSW posts since I'm stuck in CNY and can't enjoy the festival... but the two Citay and The Explorer's Club mp3 links appear to be broken.

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

The Bergen trio Ungdomskulen play proggy post punk, mixing chops and hooks with a sense of humor. But they don't sound like Primus. When I was in Norway a couple years ago, "Ungdomskulen" seemed to be on everybody's lips (or...

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt

It's been some time since we learned Modern Guilt, Beck Hansen's eighth album, would be some sort of psych rock minimalist '60s trip with Danger Mouse. Since then, we've gotten a look at the old-school jazz/Blue Note-style cover art and...

Video Hangover: Papa Roach - "Getting Away With Murder"

Every week, we dig in the archives for videos that we find noteworthy, memorable, or just unbelievably stupid. And then, Jon McMillan breaks 'em down for you. This week: Papa Roach lands an uppercut on the glass jaw of big oil.

Damien Jurado - "Murderer" (Low Cover)

After hearing "Gillian Was A Horse" from Damien Jurado's forthcoming Caught In The Trees, we contacted the Seattle singer-songwriter and asked if he'd want to premiere a track at Stereogum. Lucky for us (and you), it turned out he had...
