Talking 'Bout Girl Talk

Thousands of music bloggers simultaneously orgasmed when Night Ripper promos came in the mail. Even MTV News is listening to Girl Talk.

Am I the only one who's ... just not that into them?

The premise is promising in theory -- what if all the songs on your Nano got their 1s and 0s crossed? -- but the execution is bit seizure-inducing; just when Greg Gillis hits on a beatfuck I dig, he switches gears. If I was at a club and I heard Night Ripper it would be time to hang the DJ.

Did DJ Z-Trip & DJ P not present this gimmick more masterfully on Uneasy Listening, Volume One? Six years ago?

Here's some of Girl Talk's illegal art:

Girl Talk - "Hold Up"
Girl Talk - "Bounce That" (MP3)

Bet you guys thought I'd love it. Tell me if I'm right or if I woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

i don't hate it. I don't love it.

But I also don't get why suddenly people thin what he's doing is new, isn't this a seriously played out kind of style. I mean it's just one long mash up, no?

What's the big deal? Can someone explain to me what he's doing different then say, 1,000s of other DJs?

I agree. It sounded cool, but in reality, I kind of hate it.

yeah, it's pretty bad. I think people like it because he samples many Brit pop staples and hip hop tracks inn the same song. But he has no attention span and it is rather seizure inducing. I think the best at mash ups is. 2 Many DJ's. The most important thing is what Scott thinks of the Pipettes? I think they are ok but pretty overrated and I can't give a group much love that hates on the Beatles.

Z-Trip & P did indeed do it way before.

And better, at that.

You hit the nail on the head...

I ordered Night Ripper and like it, Yet, the problem is is that it changes too often. Anybody, and I mean anybody, with Logic can make two songs match up for a short amount of time...There are some pojnts on Night Ripper where I just wish the mash would have played for longer so that you could start feeling the groove.

Agreed--Girl Talk is fun for playing sample-spotter for a few spins, but even as a 'party mix', I couldn't imagine anyone dancing to something that switches gears every 30 seconds or so.

See, I liked listening to it, and it was fun for a bit.

On top of being a music nerd, I'm kind of an audio nerd, so when I listen to things, how it was made is often as interesting to me as the music itself.

That being said, this is worth a couple of spins for the inventiveness of how it was made, but it get tired after a while. And I agree, he switches gears really quickly once he hits a groove that works for me.

I think one's opinion of it probably has to do with the degree of his ADHD.

Mine is pretty damn bad, so I thought it was great. I agree that it probably won't hold up forever, though.

Yeah, this is a real floor-clearer and it's not too fun on headphones either.

More fun to think about/put together than listen to, I'm guessing.

Ya, cool idea but just when I like something it changes and that gets annoying.

Isn't the talking point blatant disregard for copyright on a commercial scale? I think most people can agree it's at least interesting in that regard, and considering mash-ups are really just starting to come to the attention of the general public (note the press Girl Talk is getting) it deserves a bit of hype. This is the kind of album you get to listen to in class.

Of course, Gillis will likely get eaten in court. Laws should be broken in measured doses.

Mashups are just now going public? This genre was old in the time it took to cross the pond. By the time it crossed the U.S., it was mind-numbingly boring.

Sorry, but in the end everyone would rather listen to the original song they liked in the first place. Mashups have an initial novelty but after a very short time are just stale-dated.

It's one thing to mix in a club, and get a fun little versus thing going, but even that gets old if taken too far. If you want to hear mixing that's actually INTERESTING, just go listen to the Avalanches' "Since I Left You". But god, isn't that about 6 years old now?

This is nothing new.

there's a reason the samples are all short... they fall under fair use that way. duh.

i think this is a healthy discussion -- definitely suprised that stereogum doesn't dig it and that others here don't.

personally, i dig it and have been enjoying it pretty steadily for about a week. agreed that some of the things that really work could go longer instead of inducing all of these hipster seizures

also, i don't think its all about just putting two songs together, when some of these segments that "really work" are 4 or 5 or more

Being an aspiring DJ myself, I take great interest in this. Honestly, I feel that this takes the art of sampling and reduces it to a simple cut-and-paste without rhyme or reason.

david says: "there's a reason the samples are all short... they fall under fair use that way. duh."

I hope for your sake you don't ever try that argument in court. Unless I'm the one suing you for infringement, in which case, carry on.

Yeah, I thought you liked mash-ups, Scott? I'm surprised.

I thought I'd tire of it after a few spins, but it still holds up after the initial "Hey that's Folk Implosion!" Often times a 10 second sample is all I care to remember.

[better than that dr. dog you keep going on about. blehck.]

The first song from Night Ripper mixing some hip hop track that I've probably heard before with the best song Boston ever did ... that's definitely the best part. Rather, the best part that I heard... I could only get through six tracks of the thing before getting very annoyed.

fuck z-trip and dj p (no, i don't actually mean that), but didn't john oswald beat everybody to the punch? and what the hell do you call what evolution control committee was doing in the early nineties? i love that a 15, 20 year old form is still being milked for its newness, innovativeness, and relevance. this stuff makes me cranky. i'm gonna go get a coke.

For the record, Greg has been doing this for years and used to be way more schizo. This is way toned down Girl Talk, which I totally dig. I think he achieves his goal of making good time party music. Clevland what.

WHAT!!? This album is mind bendingly amazing. It bangs so hard and is VERY VERY well put together. Not just thrown together like some of those other things people call mash ups of illegal art. Give it another try, and if you don't like it then, give it a third a fourth and a fifith. One of the best albums of 2006.

You're right -- it's kind of shit. These tracks are thrown together without a lot of care to their original keys or tempos, and he just seems to be hoping it's all moving so fast that we won't notice. Most of these blends, if fleshed-out to 3-minute, single-length mashups, wouldn't be fit to spin at our club... Not that I have anything against the eclectic party-style mix album. But this makes me tired.

I've found it pretty weak, apart from a couple tracks. The samples can be great but then the whole groove is tossed aside from yet another completely different beat, as has been noted several times above.

Plus, does anyone else find the rap choices really mundane? Just not very interesting...

It's funny how it gets called a party record when it's IMPOSSIBLE to dance to. There are so many better mashups artists from 2 Many DJs (aka Soulwax) to Go Home Productions and onward...

I was on Girl Talk months ago, heh! I, personally, think it's pretty damn bitchin'! Altho I will chime in with agreement that it tries a little too hard to be too ambitious, and does cram in too many tracks - like someone said: Just when ya start groovin' on a sample/lick, it changes in a heartbeat. That's my only complaint tho.

umm haven't people like been playin the guitar for like years now? It's like been done already, so I'm going to boycott like the Arcade Fire and like Dungen and some really hip new shit because I just like realized that people have like already used these instruments and shit. And you all are like way behind on this Mashup shit because I like refuse to listen to them now, especially Girl Talk because he like didn't invent the genre, so his shit is just agonizing. fuck get over it. night ripper is pretty enjoyable, it doesn't work in the clubs, big deal.
