Will Madonna Rock Coachella?
"In high school, I secretly listened to Madonna," Rivers Cuomo admits in the new Spin. Nothing wrong with Madonna, Rivers -- she gave us some of the best dance music of the '80s. But will she win over the indie kids of Indio? Will Giant Drag and Nine Black Alps fans kick off their sandals in the dance tent to gawk at the leotarded Queen Mum Of Pop? Stereogum has no idea. But we'll take the opportunity to share a sweet acoustic version of Madge's "Sorry" from indie rockers Swivel. Enjoy.
Swivel - "Sorry" (MP3)

You raise a good question, Scott. How will she be received? But let's face it, only a tiny percentage of attendees are really uber-indie Giant Drag fans. Your average Coachella kid would prefer to see the Chili Peppers headlining (I presume they aren't. If they are, then my point is made).

I'm pretty sure they'll dig her. She still looks great and she still has moves. What's not to dig?

giant drag isn't actually too indie anymore; have you seen myspace recently? they've been overexposed like a sunbleached polaroid.
uhm, also, i think that "swivel" meant to name themselves "drivel".

I don't think there will be a problem getting people to fill that tent for Madge's performance on Sunday. If I'm wrong, and the Coachella crowd disses the Queen, then I'll forfeit my tickets to her tour.

Giant Drag is signed to Interscope/Universal. Not indie.
Girls love Madonna. If they grew up in the 80s she is god. anyone care to disagree?

I'm a girl who grew up in the 80s. I do not love Madonna nor do I think she's God.

um, lets not forget the gays. i'm sure that they had much to do with coachella selling out on sunday (the night that she's performing) and make up much of her audience.

I prefer the acoustic version of "Sorry" than the actual Madonna song. Sad.

Due to Generation Y's infatuation with everything from the 80's, I'm sure a good amount of kids will she her just to say they did. Everyone else will probably see her just out of irony. God, I hate this generation.

Why don't all you motherfuckers quit bagging on Madonna, everyone is ignoring the fact that all you people secretly love Madonna and your just talking all this shit, please. You guys are the biggest fags out there. I love Madonna and shes going to rock Coochella, ha ha.

People can marginalize Madonna all they want. The fact is, she is still more original, more interesting, and more relevant than the posturing indie bands and indie fans that claim she is calculated, boring, or past her prime.

Madonna is my girl! No matter what jealous hoes say, she is selling out arenas and stadiums world wide. Ticket prices top $375!!!
The original Madonna sound of "Sorry" is better to me than the acoustic version, although people can have their own tastes and opinions. For the guy who will forfeit Madonna's concert ticket if you don't like the Coachella performance, senD me the ticket, YOU IDIOT!

Madonna is going to rock. I'm 15 and I "grew up" in the 90s and the new millenium and I love Madonna and her music. She is original, fresh, and artistic. No other female artist has been able to even come close to what Madonna has achieved. Madonna is a revolutionary. Her new album "Confessions On A Dance Floor" is brilliant, a fantastic DANCE record.

Madonna is our generations Elvis. She is the Queen and will reign now and long after she dies. I am flying from NY to CA just for the show.... becasue she is simply an amazing performer. Anyone who has not seen her perform live needs to stop talking out of thier ass and just shut up and let here do her thing. Madonna will be making a boat load of new fans this weekend.... GUARANTEED.

shall i remind you all of Madge's Live 8 performance? She practically stole the entire show, and she'll probably do the same with coachella. cant wait!!

she's original, creative and one hell of a performer. if you've seen any of her concerts you'll know what i'm talking about. no match to this day.

Madonna is mostly original, but I still remember that period in the early '90s where she was totally biting Courtney Love's style (though not her music). She's also notorious for having stolen a lot of her ideas from the gay culture, too (come on, vogue...). But so what? Bad Madonna is better than a lot of the best other artists out there have to offer.
With her career and success, she's still driven. How many other performers from her heyday can you say that about?

'American Life' was her indie album, her tentative step off the beaten path. I'm just waiting for her to let go of the mainstream and finally pursue her destiny as a whacked-out rebel.

Am I the only one who grew up hating Madonna in the 80s and early 90s and has, in recent years, come to highly respect her? I think she has come a long way in artistry (listen to her vocals in the "Lucky Star" years and then listen to her sing on "I'm Going To Tell You A Secret." Anybody who says she's "way past her prime" is fooling themselves, because she sucked in her prime. Those who actually listened to "American Life" would have heard some amazing music. I think "Confessions" is a great record too for the brainless 80s crowd.

Well, you all stick up for Madonna Like she's the best. Good Going. I got Tickets to see her in fresno. I cant wait. Only 2 things that bug, me on her new album is, y super pop is not on her album, and fighting spirit is?? And also, Forbidden Love? Forbidden love is a song on her bedtime stories cd also with baby face, as the back ground vocals. Good making out song!! Haha. And as for the main question, will she rock at coachella?? Of course, Madonna never puts on a performance thats half assed. And im sure it will be great! especially good to give a little preview of her up comming tour. Did I tell you i got tickets already?? lol

i have been to hundreds of shows in my 44 years, from the grateful dead to gang of 4 to the residents to cher. Madonna is the best live show i have ever been to, hands down. i remember when she first came out, non of my friends (i was what, 22 at the time?) would admit that we secretly loved her. over the years, many have come and gone but madonna is still here, and i have no shame in saying that i will be going to both her philly and atlantic city shows. only God is God, but Madonna is one hell of a performer. You will be hard pressed to find another artist who puts so much work and engergy into her product to ensure that it is the best that it can be. Cudos to the 15 year old who loves "confessions" because it is perhaps the most underrated album, at least in the US, to have come out in years. We are so caught up with age in this country. Madonna is fantastic, period, regardless of how old she is.
That said, does she belong at coachella? Well that remains to be seen tonight - but I can tell you this - girl hasn't gotten to where she by not pushing the limits and not challenging the idea of where she "belongs". My money is on Madonna knows exactly what she is doing and she will bring it down tonight. Go Madonna.

wonder what she'll look like tonight. she usually have a new (and surprise) style when she performs live. i'm seeing her in msg, hartford and atlantic city. can't wait! maddie rocks!

i'm 13 and i LOVE madonna she is like my total idol i get shivers juste listening to her music she is just soo good and looks good too hell she looks 15 years younger then she really is (i wish my mom would look like that ):P i listen to her older songs and her new songs and once i get a job am even gonna get my room painter disco like and get her face painted on my wall she is sooo talented i wish i can grow up to have half of the talent an fam shee has i maybe a bit obsessed but theres nothing wrong with that or is there :P

i agree with the person that said madonna's "prime" wasnt her best work, musically. albums Ray of Light up until Confessions are all amazing(yeah even American Life). i dont get how she is so underated and likened by a lot of casual music fans to generic pop acts like britney or whatever. i dont like mainstream chart acts generally, but i think madonna's work is amazing, usually because she uses producers that were beforehand pretty unheard of. she also crosses different genres of music together in a successful way.
its interesting that she is doing Coachella, as she is about as mainstream as an artist can get, maybe too mainstream for some people. but her reputation/pop icon status aside(for a change cos thats what everyone always talks about), the music is sh*t hot! stuart price i believe will have reworked the songs she is doing, and they will sound amazing. his remixes of the new stuff is brilliant.
id love for Deep Dish to come back and remix Confessions songs, what they done for Music was great!
and why hasnt Mylo remixed her :P
oh and ppl that knock her for her age/sex/political stance/gay icon-ness :P
.......f*ck off, for once just listen to the music and comment on that!

Actually, I am a Giant Drag fan and I went into the tent to see Madonna, stood in the crowd and (like most people) rocked out HARDER than at any other band/artist I saw at Coachella. She was very amazing. Everybody could learn from her.
PS- Sweet cover of "Sorry"

Madonna needs Coachella. Coachella doesn't need her. She knows how to hang on to cred. Somehow. Barely. And she'll lose and gain fans during it all. So props to her for that. I saw her 2nd row MSG on Music tour. A lot work put in: yes... Soulless... definitely.

Madonna don't need nobody. She did it more for her music collaborator Stuart Price. Besides in all Madonna's career she had CLub D.J's and People who were new, to remix her stuff for the club scene. Madonna gave the beastie boys a chance back in the day, and let them open up her shows for her. But she probaly slept with them all also.
yes, people do hate Madonna, but hey, her latest album did go to number 1 in 29 different countries, and she is now the oldest person to retire a video on mtv's TRL. also, just to let people who hate madoona know, that this summer alone, will make more money than the record of Cher's farwell concert which lasted 2 1/2 years!!!!
And just think, it all started in a underground club Just to get Heard.
NO Madonna did't need coachella. And coachella didn't need Madonna. But Since Madonna has the respect for whats going on at Coaachella, shes agreed to do a mini show.
So, now can we go back to hating on Mariah Scary now? I heard she had a penis between her legs.
Score = 0
Madonna is new kids on the block for grown ups. Always sucked, always will...
Let's face it, the better bands can't fill stadium-size venues in the US, so Coachella has to get Madonna.
Madonna as an original with taste? LOL. You can always sell 10,000,000 CDs if you recycle Abba to people who have never heard Gimme Gimme Gimme...
Score = 0
Swivel's version is damn painful compared to the electro-glow of Madonna's.
You hard-core indee's are a little sad. It's always those who feel marginalized that need to assert and/or SCREAM their worth to the world! Sad thing is, you can only do so by putting others down and that's too bad....and ultimately just reveals your OWN insecurities. Negatvity is futile. Madonna's the Queen. Deal and get over it already.
Score = 0
I feel the same way about Madonna you feel about New Kids on the Block or Britney Spears.
I'm not a "hard-core indee", I'm old enough to have appreciated a lot of different music and to have noticed the ongoing degradation of pop music in America. The fact is, mainstream American pop has been crap for over a decade, ever since Nirvana died out. There are many factors for this, but they're not worth elaborating here.
It's a bit annoying to have Madonna in the Coachella lineup, but you can't blame the organizers for selling out, as there are a lot more people with your taste than with mine, just as there are a lot more Britney Spears or Madonna fans than people into Metric, Dungen or Ladytron, which are considered "hard-core indee" in the Clearchannel/Abercrombie/Starbucks universe you live in, but are in fact almost mainstream in Europe.
It's not very hard to deal with it, it's actually cool to be able to see artists like these in tiny venues here as opposed to mega-concert halls or stadia in Europe.
