Music Blog Has The Right To Children

Can't we all just get along? Check out a legit bit from the armchair electronica act's new CD and see if your torrent is for reals.

Boards of Canada - "Oscar See Through Red Eye" (MP3)

...

I'll be introducing the first ever Stereogum co-writers on this site very soon (i.e., now). Their names are Jed and Jim and they'll be writing about whatever they like as long as it relates to music. I met J&J in college where we put out an often terrible humor magazine. Jed was the one who first turned me on to Aeroplane Over The Sea. Yesterday they came over with an armful of CDs they bought at Other Music, so Blood On The Wall and Floatation Toy Warning fans sit tight.

They'll be taking over in a few weeks when Eliza Jane and I get married ... and go to Greece and Turkey! Maybe some of you can give us Greece and Turkey tips. And then I'll be back. With some hott Greek indie rock MP3s.

And if you check out page 198 of the new Fader you can read a really embarrassing article they asked me to write about Billy Joel.

Take it away Jed and the New Xiu Review...

Athens is the shits. I wouldn't recommend more than 2 days there. Crowded, dirty polluted. There is a wicked theater on a rooftop near the Plaka. You have to catch a movie on it. Any movie. I know who watches movie on a honeymoon, but the experience of catching a movie on an open rooftop with the view of the Acropolis is amazing.

I highly recommend the island of Lesvos. The tourist don't know much about it, good for honeymooners.

Delphi is a pretty cool town to check out, but it's not somewhere I would stay for an extended period (i.e. more than one night). I agree about Athens, nasty nasty place. If you've ever been to Mexico city, that's what I would compare it to. Pure urban sprawl. The Acropolis is amazing to see in person though, especially when it's lit up at night. One more site in Athens I stopped at for 20 min was the first stadium of the modern Olympic games. It was pretty nift.

You should go to Santorini and Paros, both amazing islands. Truly spectacular.

Congrats.

It's Istanbul, not Constantinople

You just have to know where to go in Athens. Clearly, you dumbass tourists don't. And anyone who says Lesvos is good for honeymooners will get a giggle out of the Greeks. Unless Stereogum is actually a girl.

Good time of year to go, though.

I just got back from karpathos. Utterly beautiful. Great semi-hidden beaches. Super kind people. Not heavily touristed (for now). Good for couples.

Someone mentioned lesvos, it's also nice and not too touristed. Though it's more northern, might begin getting cooler by late Sept.

Santorini has of course that stunning view and is good to see, but so many dumb tourists it's impossible to get any time to yourself.

I sorta like athens but don't stay there more than 2 days.

Southern turkish coast is awesome. Can't go wrong there.

If you go to Istanbul, go to see Topkapi Palace, The Blue Mosque, and the Hagia Sophia for sure. Also, make sure you spend time in the Taksim district, there's a long road called Freedom Road or Liberty Road or something of that sort, it's easily recognizable with tram service running along it, there is a nightlife there that is absolutely unrivaled by any city in America.
The southern coast of Turkey is beautiful, if you're going to Antalya or Fethiye spend some time at the beach called Oludeniz. And get seafood. Ask around for the ghost town Kaya, too. It's a greek city that's been abandoned for 400 years.
If you're going to the west coast of Turkey, Izmir is a pretty remarkable city if you're into history at all. It used to be a greek city called Smyrna, and was the site of one of the most brutal acts of human destruction ever when Ataturk's armies simply scourged the entire Greek population. The ruins of Ephesus are also 30 minutes from Izmir, and it's possibly too amazing to describe.
I spent a month in Turkey last year, if you have any questions shoot me an email.

We're gonna be in Istanbul for 3 days I think. Going to Satorini and Crete beforehand. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
