Music Journalism Sarcasm?
Sometimes dry, factual comments in new stories come off as snide but funny:
- "Many of Sigel's songs depict guns, drugs and violence." ("Philly rapper Beanie Sigel cleared in '03 shooting")
- "Meanwhile, the 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' producer filed suit last week against a financial associate of four-and-a-half years, Michelle Blaine, alleging she embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from him via fraudulent schemes." ("Spector Sues, Gets Trial Date")
Grammy-winning R&B singer D'Angelo is listed in critical condition after his Hummer crashed on September 19th in his native Virginia[...] His latest album, Voodoo, was released in 2000. ("D'Angelo Injured in Crash")Is it just me, or are they trying to say, "D'Angelo's career isn't going anywhere."? It just seems like an extraneous piece of information, and a weird one to end on.

wtf. is this really what passes for a post on stereogum now?

Inverted pyramid, man.

Those wire reports (AP, Reuters et al), they always like to include little bits dry "context" like that. for most people, Voodoo and the Grammys were the last they heard of D'Angelo. I think it's a totally fair thing to include.
Score = 0
I agree with scott, but even if it was included to point out how long it has been, I still think it is fair to include. I mean, this guy really is doing nothing with his life, and it is indicative of the fact that he can't get his shit together.

jim hates black people

Also, everyone should check that Phil Spector article to see his completely insane hair.

I think it puts D'Angelo in context. "Why is his car crash better than the guy down the street on his way from work?" Oh, I see. He had an album out in 2000. Validates the "news" since he's a celebrity.

can we go back to stereogum being somewhat entertaining and at times actually relevant? weak sauce, fellas.

Yes, it reminds everyone who I am since nobody has heard from me in 5 years, except my parole officer.
P.S. I am recovering nicely

Reg, tell that to the Deerhoof covers album that refuses to download...

that was a dumb post

i thought that maybe they were insinuating that there was some crazy voodoo at work in the crash. that erykah badu must have some bad feelings after D'angelo turned Common gay.

What a lame post.

congratulations to Stereogum!
You have reached The Peter Principle->
You have risen to the high level of your incompetence->
Which is approximately High School level->
Your new demographic is now 16 yrs old & younger, sweet!
Oh wait, hasn't that always been your demographic?
Aw geez, guys we all know high school was fun & hard to give up. We all kind a wish we could be back in high school again, being the class clown and all..

How does someone "reach" a principle? That's absolutely incoherent.

aw c'mon mat don't be so nit picky
how's about 'achieved' instead of 'reach'
