My Chemical Romance Bottled Too

Another rowdy Reading report from NME:

My Chemical Romance have been subjected to a heavy bottling while performing on stage at the Carling Weekend: Reading Festival today (August 27).

The band were pelted repeatedly by the audience throughout their set on the main stage.

However while the group tried to battle through and continue their performance, the constant shelling clearly upset frontman Gerard Way.

After sarcastically asking for the crowd to boo and hiss, the singer declared: "We might be outsiders today, but we represent every outsider out there".

He then introduced a track saying, "This song is called thanks for all the bottles, thanks for all the piss, thanks for all the golf balls, thanks for all the apples and thanks for all the sticky shit."

Cute Is What We Aim For may wanna rethink that UK tour.

UPDATE: Maybe they didn't like Gerard's hair? Pic via AOL...

Alright, at this risk of sounding like I actually think "MCR" or "Panic" are in effect decent, worthwhile bands to listen to...I think it's ridiculous that ANY performer should have to endure this kind of ridicule and downright ASSAULT simply because they agreed to play a given festival.

Unfortunately, the kids winging these bottles are just reinforcing that stereotype of the "elitist indie kid" that so many younger kids pin on people simply because they fall into a certain style of dress and musical taste.

Do Panic, MCR, and Fallout Boy, and Pete Wentz's penis blow? In my opinion, YES. Would I ever throw a glass bottle at any one of the members of the above listed bands (genitals included)? NO.

They do what they love, they get paid big bucks for doing it.
I can't fault them for that. I will never RESPECT them as I do legitimate acts, but I cannot fault them. Taste is all relative, sure-- but it should never implore violence.

Maybe these kinds of people should hop in Doc Brown's Delorian and travel back to 1994, so they can go to a Warzone show and carve X's into the backs of kids who clrealy aren't straight edge. It's the same dim witted, bigot mentality. Franky, I expect than that from people who listen to the same kind of music I listen to.

frederick, I agree that nobody on stage should be pelted simply because they play crappy music. However, Reading/Leeds (and most of the festivals) usually attract mainstream acts and the kind of people who go to act like idiots and do stuff like that. I haven't seen this year's lineup but I imagine it's very similar to years past.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's probably not "elitist indie kids" (although I am a bit elitist and I think MCR/et all are garbage) but rather just jackasses. Think back to Woodstock '99 (granted, that was in the states, but I think that the same kind of general asshole is found in high concentration whenever you get large groups of people together).

I guess what I'm saying is that unless you're a headliner, dodging projectiles is just part of playing a festival, unfortunately.

frederick, neither would I bottle or throw my own shit at a band like MCR, or any band for that matter. That's what heroes are for.

And to think, MCR apparently had a barrage of shit hurled at them from bottles to vegetable matter. To think that Panic! at the Disco only got one bottle.

And for the record, Razorlight sucks ass.

Years ago, back in my younger, more foolish days I went to see Green Day play live at Cardiff Castle. The support was Iggy Pop. He got pelted for his entire set. I was so angry. Okay, Iggy Pop might be a douche, but he's a douche that is in some way responsible for the music that these stupid kids were going to see. There'd be no Green Day without the Stooges. Sigh.

Also, all this Reading bottle-throwing business is really stupid, and awfully pretensious of festival-goers who will probably be going to see The Kooks later on in the day.

That earnest "outsider" crap is nauseating. Your band has sold X million records and has made a career of pandering to the lowest common denominator. You are not outsiders. It's hard for me to condone throwing things, but if it makes these bands go away a little faster than it might be worth it.

The fact that everyone is saying this band sucks and that band rules and wasting a great deal of time doing it is crazy. They are bands trying to make a living. You would not go to a play that is more commercial than another and toss shit at the stage. These types of bands(commercially driven) will always be around. Everyone has the decision to like them or not, but to assault them and then write about how cool these people are who did it is so wrong. How can you people not see that?

When did the majority of readers of Stereogum become little kids who think it's somehow "cool" to throw bottles at bands on stage? This is cool? It's somehow okay to try to injure people who are performing?

I can only guess that everyone who thinks this is in anyway acceptable are 12 year olds who play too many video games.

My god. I never thought I would feel any kind of empathy for MCR, but you idiots are making it very easy.

I don't like Panic, MCR, Fall Out Boy, 50 Cent or Nickelback. In fact, I have a hard time thinking of something kind to say about their message/attitude as musical artists.

That said, I also choose to not pay money to attend any of their shows. If you go to a festival where a band you dislike is playing, then take it up with the concert organizers -- not the artists.

Do you know what other bands I dislike? Pantera and Damageplan. I can't stand the headbanging, overdriven bass, muttered/screamed lyrics... And I can't think of many kind things to say about their music.

But Dimebag Darrell is still dead. Granted, the fan who shot him was insane. But where do we go from knocking frontmen unconscious with glass bottles? Getting bottled at Reading and getting shot on a Michigan stage aren't that far apart.

Wasn't it Bonnie Tyler who was repeatedly pelted with bottles of piss at Reading when it was still a metal festival in the 80s?

My favourite story of this kind, however, was when Steps played at Creamfield (at least I think it was Creamfields.) Not only did people pelt them with bottles of piss, but they actually emptied to fluid from their glow-sticks into the bottles too, thus pelting the hapless pop act with LUMINOUS piss.

Just in case there are some people getting confused out there, the bottles being thrown are made of plastic, not glass, and I think that only water is sold in bottles at these festivals, all beer and other liquid comes in a plastic pint-sized cup (usually branded).

I did get hit in the head with one filled with sand once, when Taking Back Sunday performed after Slayer, excellent festival planning there.

Look, I dislike Panic! at the Disco as much as the next man...but does the band deserve to have glass bottles and piss thrown at him? Half of you are going to say yes, whilst passing out flyers to raise awareness of school bullying or genocide in Darfur.

Oh, and Surfjan Stevens' "Illinois" was a lot better when it was called "The sountrack to the Motion Picture THE MUSIC MAN". You fucking hipsters are so predictable; you cream in your pants every time a white person does a cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy".

the real sad thing about this is that mcr is getting pegged with mediocre bands like fob and panic! when they're levels above these bands. mcr, though i don't think they'll allow themselves to be called "emo," carried the flag well when they had their 2nd album released. after which, the likes of fob and panic! came along and they ruined the whole thing, but i hope mcr's 3rd album would elevate the emo music genre.

I actually love My Chemical Romance, big fan, and they being bottled is a sound of jealous idiots. Call them what you please, dislike them if you want to. Fine by me, its not going to change any true fans opinion, and the only effect is going to cause on the population of haters ~like yourself~ is... well.. them yelling. "Yeah dude, emo sux and so does MCR".. Come on now haters, find something better to do with your time.

If you hate them so much, the fans obviously do not care nor want to hear you complain about them. I'm a big Greenday fan too and yes I do admit that I became a fan when "American Idiot" was released. I was too young to care about GD in the 90s anyway.

I'm 17 for future reference and so I simply decided to listen to old Greenday songs like "When I Come Around" and "Longview" about a year ago, I love them as much as I do BOBD and WMUWSE. But back to MCR and your emo complaints, I'm a fan of some Panic! At the Disco songs.

Most people just don't understand that people are going to like what they like and dislike what they dislike. So there really shouldn't be any insulting of bands of all genres (emo, punk, hardcore, metal, etc etc) There really isn't any point to it. I might hate Britney Spears but you don't see me complaining of how she "sucks" or how people should throw things at her.

I can't tell you how many times I heard some hater speak of how Avenged Sevenfold (my favorite hardcore band) sucks. But how can a band suck? Do they even look up the definition of words before they use them? Suck does not mean lame or insignificant in anyway.

i agree with the people above me i love mcr they are the best band ever and they never deserved to get pelted with bottles (nor did any other band). mcr helps a lot of people get through a lot of difficult times and for the people who didnt know they said that they are outsiders because when they were at school they were always outsiders and even now they are because there music is very different from other popular artists today. unlike a lot of other bands mcr acctually arent in it for the money and the fame they are in it because thats what they love and believe in and also because they want to help people (which they do). so really whats the point of throwing bottles at them its not going to solve anything and its certainatley not going to make them stop singing. its pointless!

I've got nothing against EMO and I am a half-emo but I just cannot stand MCR, the singer has absolutely no voice (he can't sing), even that goddamned Billy with no Talent (Benjamin ) is better, and the band made the EMO style "in"! Now everyone want to look like EMO and to be one, but they have NO(!!!) idea what it does mean to be an EMO. Sorry pals, but there's no way I'm gonna like MCR. Yeah I forgot to say that those songs may eb catching and some people may like his voice, but the second reason I hate them is too great.

This is really, really sad. Okay, I can totally understand- the organizers were complete IDIOTS for organizing them after SLAYER of all groups. It was (what I'd expect as extreme boo-ing) much worse than anyone could anticipate, because violence is ironically one of those things that the band is strongly against. I'm not a crazy MCR fan, neither am I against them. I'm just appalled at how dim-wittedly people are handling the situation, even today, one year later. To Fredrick, and Brian, I prop you as one of the few open minded people here among the commenters. True, things are different here in America, true, Woodstock '99 is... erm, irrelavent to this in most ways, but seriously, can we please just stop with the insulting and name-calling? Wannabees, or not, the band does what they love and share their music with the world. If you don't like it, fine, boo, hiss, mock, whatever- BUT DON'T GO THROWING THINGS AT INNOCENT PEOPLE!!!

Not a huge MCR fan but I like "The Black Parade". Regardless, if I saw a fellow concert-goer throwing bottles at the bands, it's open season. I paid good money to see a show. Now you suddenly decide you need to thin out the lineup a bit?

Like hell, you will. Into the pit, you little pissant. Let's see you throw trash at anyone when my fat ass is sitting on your neck.

There's a lot of bands I don't like, but I won't throw bottles at them because I don't like them. Everyone has different tastes, but the whole music scene today is so caught up on what's okay to listen to and not okay to listen to, bands like these are having to pay the price.

So yeah, they're mainstream. Yeah, some emo kids probably listen to them. And yeah, they were unfortunate enough to play after Slayer, but they are there for their music, so give a little respect.

However, I'm sure any kid would want to throw bottles at MCR after a Slayer set. Not saying its right, but its something that kids do. I don't think attitudes toward mainstream or stereotyped bands are going to change. Music to me, is such a scene thing now. People can't like what they like and get respect for their tastes anymore.

Eliteist indie kid? I think not. We bottle the shit out of them at Download too. They played a headline slot on the main stage on the friday against Korn on the second stage. . . the main stage was empty except for about 4 rows and about 16 rows of people throwing bottles (and a throwing knife). The managed to get about 5000 people into the 75,000 capacity main stage and had to leave half an hour into their 2 hour set because 30,000 people left Korn when they finished to join in the 'fun' down at the mainstage. Hopefully they'll never come back.
There is no place for MCR in the UK rock scene, stick to pop festivals.

It's not cool, or right to throw bottles at bands like MCR... But do we give a fuck? No =D

Not only is it fun to do what the fuck we want (yup, we don't go by the book of righteousness), and throw bottles at these shitty fucking bands, we get after-entertainment by looking at all the fucking emos crying 'coz their oh-so-lovely Gerard Way got hurt.

This band doesn't even deserve to be here, they don't deserve fame. If it wasn't for Gerards looks, and the trends, these fuckers would have nothing. But noooo, all these obsessive little emo girls have to follow the trend of stalking the band, whilst claiming to be unique.

We hate MCR. Stay the fuck out of the music business.

Mychem stand for all the outsiders? Outsiders, my ass! It's so presumptuous of them to defend themselves with such an arrogant, self-pitying front. They certainly don't stand for me.

Hand me a bottle, someone.
