My Grandma And Your Grandma Sitting By The Fire

Glass Candy have recorded a rad cover of "Iko Iko." Listen here. As of this post, it's only been streamed 1,000 times so show GC some love. Any band that covers a tune from the Rain Man soundtrack is okay in my book. Er, blog.

Anyone who writes "I'm a good driver" in the comments gets banned! You can write about Wapner, though.

Sorry, but their version really sucks. Nice try, though.

It goes without saying (although I'll say it anyway) that the best version of this song was done by Justine Bateman & The Mystery on the "Satisfaction" aka "Girls of Summer" soundtrack.

Where does this song originate from?

I know the Grateful Dead did it in the 70s

"Iko Iko" was described as an old Mardi Gras chant that most New Orleans kids had heard all their lives.

Some part of the song is certainly part of the chanting by slaves at Congo Square in early New Orleans. But James "Sugarboy" Crawford wrote the song as we know it today, providing the music to go with the chant. Originally titled "Jock-O-Mo," he had a hit with it in 1954. To this day, Crawford says he's never received a royalty check for covers of the song.

According to Allen Touissant, the expression "Iko Iko" developed into local slang for "you can kiss my ass." So everytime someone sings this song, they're in a sense telling Crawford to kiss their ass.

For what it's worth, "Iko" means John in Croatian. At least I hope it does- that's what my Croatian in-laws call me.

Yeowch. As a recommendation, Iko is easier to listen to than the other three car wrecks. Excitebike Again 2002, WTF? Why kill my cherished memories of that old quarter-eatin' machine?

The ultimate and most musically truthful version was done by Dr. John on his 1972 album of standards "Dr. John's Gumbo."

And, as someone who owns the soundtrack to "Rain Man," I'm still not sure what sort of musical theme Barry Levinson was aiming for--"Iko Iko," "Dem Bones," "Lonely Avenue?"

Don't forget the use of "Do You Realize" by Flaming Lips in a car commercial -- I believe it's for Mitsubishi (I could be wrong). The lyrics that they include are:

Do you realize
That you have the most beautiful face
Do you realize
We're floating in space
Do you realize
That happiness makes you cry

Lyrics they omitted:
Do You Realize
That everyone you know someday will die

!!!

Dr. John's version is very good, as well as the Dead's. I've also enjoyed the Neville Brothers version.

This one...not so much.

I can't even believe people are still covering this. What's next, "Sweet Caroline"? "I Want Candy"?

Let's here about a band that doesn't have a press agent and a personal stylist, Scott. That's right, I'm bustin' your chops, tough guy.

i love glass candy, but this is definitely not their best song. check out "life after sundown" off their demo, if you can find it. it's a great sexy, funky dance song that i never, ever tire of. kind of reminds me of "walking on thin ice," though i can't explain why.

Hey..
This band doesn't have a publicist or a stylist.
Plus this is just the demo version.
The 12" version is more developed.
I respect that some bands can still take chances and do unexpected things sometimes.
I'll admit, the song took some time for me to get it.
And!They are the first band to cover it using totally new music.
Really it seems more like an interpretation of the lyrics than a cover.
The saxaphone rules!
