My Morning Jacket are playing at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC tonight (GWAR is next week). Sucks if you like the band but not DC's swampy weather and confusing streets. But wait! NPR.org is webcasting the show, including opening act Kathleen Edwards' set. I have to say, that's pretty damn cool. Tune into NPR.org (uh... surf onto? my lingo is out-of-date.) at 8:45 to hear it.

Used to love this band...unfortunatley the new CD has that ridiculous copy-burn-protection on it, so even if you purchase the CD, you can't transfer it to your iPod or iTunes. I walked out of Tower Records with another band's CD instead. I'll never purchase another MMJ disc.

According to ATO, their replicator put the copy-protection on the CD without their knowledge beforehand.

I grew up in the D.C. area before leaving for NYC. Don't mess with the District, jed. These folks have major chips on their shoulders. The truth is, D.C. is one of the most fun cities in the country (truth be told, the Ethiopian food in D.C. is waaay better. and don't get me started on the BBQ. and people actually dance at shows and go to shows they like instead of going because everyone blogs about some band) In fact, the only bad thing about D.C. is that many have major chips on their shoulders about living in D.C.
Also, I think it's funny that MMJ named their album "Z." Ha, ha! See? It's like they know they're boring!

Tried to buy Z Friday at my fav indie store in LA and noticed this big "this cd is encoded with copy guard" sticker on the cd. When I asked the girl at the counter if I can play the cd on my laptop, she said they didn't put those stickers on, and that someone came in and did it without their knowledege! She was unable to tell me if it would play on my laptop. I bought The Go Team.

you don't have a car? neither do i. amtrak. it's not painful to use and union station (where i catch amtrak in dc) IS a metro stop. can't get anymore seamless than that. the 9:30 club similarly has...wait for it...a metro stop!
too expensive? if you know which chinatown bus to take, DC-NY is $40 and easy to bounce between, and i'm fairly sure that other cities like wilmington and philly have their own ridiculously low fares in to town. once you get here, they set you free by...you guessed it, a metro stop. so i don't really get what the problem is...especially since as someone pointed out, the weather is fantastic right now. it's swampy in the summer.
and no, i don't have a chip on my shoulder about living here-- i'm not from here, so this unnecessary, lowly-ugly-stepsister to nyc shtick amuses me. dc is great; the 9:30 club is even better. anyone who doesn't know either of those things-- their loss.
though i don't have trouble navigating either traffic circles or the streets named after states, which run diagonally through the otherwise brilliantly simple grid, i'm aware that both of those things can confound adept drivers. but...i still don't get what the problem is, since you don't have a car.
the point is, it was a lame insult which sounded ignorant and your post would've been fine (if not better) without it.

Was thinking about buying the CD. Went to best buy and left with Johnny Cash Legend instead. I really want to buy it, but just can't condone the copy protection. Think I'll dowload it insted, something which I haven't done for three years.

i'll admit, the whole protection thing blows. but a band like this doesn't deserve the bad rap its getting... they have been around for years and have put on some of the best lives shows i have ever seen. that is what they do.... they play music. just because a greedy record label chooses to protect their cd doesn't mean you should judge the band. my complaint about the cd is it just isn't as good as "it still moves." but that may be impossible to do... go buy that album if you want something for your trendy ipod. its the only MMJ you'll ever need.

at least you guy's can buy the c.d. its not being released in australia until next year. saw the band here last year, what a revelation! any confusion about exactly where they were coming from on their records, all made sense live. best gig i've seen for years. can't wait for the new one.

MMJ has like two decent songs per album, the rest are a bunch of wanna be Dan Fogleberg rehashes. It sounds like Kermit the Frog singing over mediocre playing and half assed songwriting. This band is not good and for anyone that says they are the next Radiohead or something, please, please, pick up some Death Cab for Cutie or Wilco...and you will see what a band with actual talent sounds like.
