The Sun has the biggest viral marketing thing going on through myspace. grr.

I missed them in Los Angeles a couple weeks ago. Anyone see them live yet?

I agree with Devin, The Sun don't sound too Spoony to me.

Robbers on High Street is basically Spoon. I downloaded a song and it sounds exactly the same. I can't distinguish it. Basically the same voice, same style...good, but derivative.

I saw The Sun live a few months ago (opening for OkGo). Worst live band I've ever seen. Simply atrocious.

New band, at least to me, The Boxer Rebellion, they just released 'Exits',
but they're mostly in the UK.

The Sun's first EP was fucking great. "Back In The Sumer of '72" was one of the best songs I heard in 2003. Can't say a whole lot about their new album as I haven't heard it, but they're nice folks. They have the drummer from New Bomb Turks. Who gives a shit if they have major label folks trying to get them heard. Give'm a chance.

I have visited this site frequently for about 2 years. But I have never commented until now...
Marissa Nadler's singing has put me into a neverending trance. It has been a very long time since I stopped dead in my tracks to listen to a song in its entirety. Can you please tell me what this song "Turquoise" is going to be released on?

anyone going to an OkGo show has no right to trash any band that might be opening said show.

i mean, really.

I completely agree with Drewbacca - the Sun's EP is incredible. I saw them open for the Flaming Lips in 2003, enjoyed their sound and picked up the EP at the show. Their show was high energy as is the EP. Two years later I am still listening to that EP frequently and have been anxiously awaiting something new from them. Hopefully it won't disappoint.

I'll be the first to agree that The Sun writes some pretty piss-poor lyrics, but they can write some damn catchy tunes. The "Did Your Mothert Tell You?" second EP's not as good as the first, but it's been playing in my car for a month now. Found it in a cut-out bin.

I'm a huge Sun fan. I've seen them here in Philly twice. Each time, the band was extremely nice, put on a spectacular show, and even took requests when songs that I had hoped to hear were not originally part of their set list. Here's some mp3s fot the non- believers:

Carry It All
http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~dubin/carryitall.mp3
My Girlfriend's Best Friend
http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~dubin/girlfriend.mp3
Valentine
http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~dubin/valentine.mp3

The new album has several radio-friendly songs on it ("We Tried", "Must Be You"), so it wouldn't surprise me if Warner gave them a little nudge into the mainstream in the next few months.

ALso, as far as comparisons go, I think the lead singer has a Howlin' Pele Almqvist thing goin' on when he's screaming, so I sometimes use The Hives as a referant. "Valentine" is a dead-ringer for Arcade Fire's "Power Out". Other than that, The Clash? And there is a little Sponn in there. I've used that comparision as well, though I agree with people who say that Robbers On High Street are way Spoonier.

The Sun's sound IS hard to pin down, and that's why I think they're really solid. The full album has a very diverse array of songs. While the lyrics do lack on a few of them, the musical execution is usually impeccable.

thanks interper, you are right on the money. i've beena fan for a while, and you should totally check out those three songs. the one stereogum posted is a little cheesey, but they are a very good modern rock band. power-poppy and maintreamy, but good.

That Sun song sounds A LOT like the Replacements' "Can't Hardly Wait", what with the circular guitar riff, etc. The dude's voice is a little like old days Westerberg too, wait, strike that, I just got the end of the song, it sounds almost *exactly* like Westerberg.

I loved it all. I loved how the guitars almost sound like hammer dulcimers on "Turqoise," and I wanted to break out the Funky Dance when I heard 33hz.

The song "torquoise" is going to be released on an album that is currently being released on the underground label
Eclipse Records. The album is called The Saga of Mayflower May, it is Marissa's second full length record. You can buy it now at lots of indie record stores and through the eclipse-records.com site.
