I got it--and wow!!! is it super BORING and TIRED he tried to make Odelay 2 but.... there are no songs and what was once cutting edge and new in '96 aint anymore. HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!!!

i wouldn't quite say it's as bad as Ally is saying, but that said, i wasn't very impressed with it either.

i know Beck is capable of SO much better than this, is i think my biggest problem with it. it sounds like a rehash of all of his stuff from Mellow Gold up through Muations almost, mashed together into one.

that's not to say there's not some cool/fun tracks, but there's tons of filler too sadly.

and if Hell Yeah is really the first single, wow, bad choice.

I managed to snag it. It isn't horrible, but I would say unimpressive. When i saw him in Boston a couple years back, I felt he had grown into a mature musician and when he played "Where It's At" and "Loser" they felt out of place, dated and like the work of another musician completely. I think the label is pushing him for a radio single or the fans that think he should have stayed with the Odelay formula finally got to him. M. Doughty once said of fans that asked if Soul Coughing would return to the "Ruby Vroom" - "Would you like it if I asked you to go back to Kindergarten?" The band broke up shortly after that...

it's not as bad as folks are saying and i'm not sure how anyone could come to such snap judgements in so short a period of time especially since odeley was originally a grower as well.

having said that, it doesn't seem to break any new ground and certainly ain't as freaky as midnite vultures but overall it's a pretty decent album.

it sounds like beck and maybe that's what's turning folks off. this would be the first beck disc to be viewed as an obvious sequal, sound-wise, to a previous album.

I was able to download it from Nappy Cat. So far I've enjoyed it, but it will take a few more listens to side one way or another. On first listen, I like Chain Reaction, E-Pro and, um, track 12.

I've got a couple of the songs available to download on my site, onelouder.blogspot.com. Sorry that I can't share the entire thing, but if it's on Slsk it shouldn't be hard to find.

These songs aren't finished yet, they're not the final versions. So all snap judgments should wait until we get a finished project. There is an "official" vinyl single hitting stores (though it's reportedly anonymous) and the four songs on it reportedly sound quite different than the versions of the four songs that leaked.

Two tracks are on http://onelouder.blogspot.com/. I'm fiending for the rest. I like the two tracks a lot, especially Brazilica.

And I like how all these clowns are already saying the album sucks after the album has maybe leaked for about 2 days tops??

The kneejerk backlash is pretty stupid and really comes off as backlash for the sake of backlash. If Pitchfork gave this a 10 tomorrow, these same clowns would be raving about this album.

I don't think it's nearly as bad as anyone is painting it to be. He promised a record that was a return to the sound that made him famous, that's exactly what he's delivered. No, it doesn't cover any new ground but it doesn't suck and it isn't tired. It's totally listenable. If you're expecting something groundbreaking, nope this isn't that record. But cut the guy a break -- he practically invented the sound he is revisiting.

Just remember that Beck's worst album will always be better than Ashlee Simpson's best album. That should give you enough oxygen for at least the rest of the day.

This leaked version is an awesome album. Fiending for Beck is right, the kneejerk backlash is ridiculous.

And groundbreaking? Like the person above said, the guy invented the sound he is revisiting!! Sea Change is an amazing album, is it groundbreaking? Well, not necessarily, but its still a great, great album.

Already this new album sounds better and more groundbreaking than most of the mediocre stuff kids rave about (Bloc Party? Killers?).

To all the Beck haters - suck it. This album is great.

jeffk, I predict a 9.2 or 9.0 from Pitchfork.

BECK IN BUSINESS!

BECK made a surprise appearance at LOS ANGELES’s SPACELAND last week (January 13).

The singer turned up out of the blue at the tiny venue to play an impromptu gig to 250 people.

He premiered new material from his forthcoming, as-yet-untitled album, including ‘Guero’, ‘Hell Yes’, and ‘Epro’.

During the show Beck also altered the words to ‘Sly And The Family Stone's ‘Thank You (4 Letting Me B Mice Elf Again)’, to ‘Thank You For Letting Me Play Spaceland Again’.

His new album, which has been recorded in LA and produced by the The Dust Brothers and Tony Hoffer, is out in March.

b-b-beck's new record is b-b-boring.

my gripe with beck is that he has the power, intelligence, and taste to do something really great and different, yet continues to stagnate. the dude obviously knows better. if you have that kind of money and power why not go out on a limb and do something really creative.

why hire tha dust brothers to make odelay for you again when there are so many exciting producers/music makers out there making relevant, creative, and exciting music?
i mean, if britney can hire DFA....

i think bjork is a good example of a high profile artist who uses her power to take shit a little farther out. whether or not you like her music, she puts her neck out and does some creative shits.

boresville.....

You can't win no matter what. People say that Bjork has let her artistic ego take over. Oh, how easy it is to be a critic.

Where would geek rock be today without Beck? I haven't heard the tracks yet, but I'm willing to give them a listen without crying for Death Cab for Cutie, the Decemberists or the Scissor Sisters after 5 seconds.

Then again, I still think Jimmy Page is a god, so I may be too old to know what I'm talking about anymore.

I was at the show. Beck only played songs from Sea Change. However during "Lost Cause" Will Ferrell came out dressed in a unitard and did an interpretive dance to the song. Awesome night. Will also rocked the cowbell during the finale. J.B. and Eddie on lead vocals, Grohl on drums and everyone else on guitar played, "Time has Come Today", "So You Want to Be a Rock and Roll Star" and "Good Times, Bad Times" It was a very memorable night.

uh, hello? this album is considerably more groundbreaking than sea change (which wasn't in the slightest bit groundbreaking) and midnite vultures (which was just a straightup pastiche of various other people) and mutations (which was mostly just very straight soft rock). so unless you're one of the people who think beck really hasnt been the same since odelay (like me) then your criticism of this album for revisiting old sounds can go suck a fuck

from beck.com:

Speaking of, as some of you may have seen, the new Beck album, tentatively due out March 28th, has unceremoniously been leaked onto the masses. This is NOT the final album. It is an early unmixed, unmastered version that is neither the final sequence or all the tracks that will appear, so please be aware this is not what Beck intended to happen or bestow onto his fans.

Well! Some people owe some other people an apology. There were those on this board that clearly heard that something was off about the tracks in their current form. An opinion which the artist himself apparently agrees with. They were shouted down by those who think anything carrying the right brand (in this case, Beck) needs to be accepted without thought. Nice aural skills, kids. BTW, if I were an artist, I'd probably value thoughtful appreciation over blind loyalty.

Yeah, Chris is right. Unmastered, unmixed, whatever. These tracks are hot, and shouting them down just to prove you're cooler than everyone was stupid even if they are unmastered or whatever. Maybe the tracks downloaded sound a bit basic and boring to some people.

I've only allowed myself to listen to a little bit of it, but taking that and piecing together some reviews- I think it Beck has done something more interesting than people will give him credit for here.

Yes- it's a return to his older sounds, but not a remake of any of his records. He's merged different sounds together to make a catchy and funky record with a liberal smattering of hip hop- but one that's more relaxed and mature. Surely something that comes naturally after the brilliant Sea Change and his marriage and child?

Looking at the way that the record harks back to his younger days in L.A, it also seems like quite a personal record.

I know Beck won’t let us down, the way he’s kept on forwarding the release date shows his dedication to making the record sound exactly as he wants it to. Don’t judge on some reportedly very different mp3’s.

I'm liking the album so far, keeping in mind that it normally takes me a week or two to fully get into an album. I'm really pleased that he is working with the Dust Brothers and Tony Hoffer again, but I was really hanging out for the stuff he has done with Cornelius. Hopefully some will come out as B-Sides.

I noticed how people take for granted the catchy songs like "Summer Girl," which is a totally good pop song (might appeal to fans of Hey Ya!), and insist that Beck is capable of doing some OTHER kind of music which would be much more pleasing. I for one find the guitars and singing and lyrics on this album completely bitching, and am glad it has plenty of stuff that grows on you slowly, like the song "Readymade" did once. I also notice that internet discussion of anything leaked prematurely is always negative, disappointed, etc, which probably stems more from the fact that listening to music on a computer sucks.

If I wait to have my mind completely blown, it may be a long time before I get a new album, kna' mean? I just hate it when people don't listen but pick teams instead. "I listened for 10 whole minutes and I've decided it's great." Tell that to all those people who had to sell back their copies of Jagged Little Pill in the 90's.

Yeah, the album isn't great, but it's still good. It's amazing how much Beck has stayed in motion his whole career, and even though people expect him to, I don't think he intends on retracing his steps ever. Odelay is, to me, one of the best rock albums, and I doubt anyone will ever be able to trump it. And, even if Beck sounds like a parody of himself on this album, something tells me it wasn't entirely a mistake.

I think people love to build up artists (celebrities) to certain "standards" that they just don't live up to in their little, uncreative, 'too cool for school' minds...the true fans understand where the art comes from.. and they take it for what it is..

and if they don't then that's obviously aren't fans of that person..nor art itself..

btw.. I immensely dig every diddy... ;)

Where It's At? This is where it's at. I downloaded five songs from Guero. I did not expect anything less, but greatness. I got a lil' more than I had thought. To all you vultures pickin, at the pieces. I hope you choke on it, 'cause it is goin' be around for a long time to feast on. To the rest enjoy the best from a man called Beck. I think he would agree it's time to pass the dutchee from coast to coast.

heard its not the final album that leaked. It still needs some work and rebuilding. I'm not a Beck fan at all... However, I came across it and I must say that I really like the album.

the first song called "brazilica" is very slick and reminds me of Sting stripped to it's essential feeling. a song called 'black tambourine'will do great for the alternative dancefloor with its U2 feeling and the other tracks stand out nice as well. Expect more (downtempo) beats n breaks and less melancholy - thats what beck does best, and I appreciate that much more then his cartoonesk approach to singer-songwriting.

I haven't read all the posts on here. There are too many for me to read right now, but I just wanted to say that I'm really beginning to like the album.

I've been studying abroad in Brazil for 2 1/2 months now, and it sounds to me that Beck is taking some ideas from Brazilian music. Even the name "Brazilica" suggests this. The background percussion that it begins with and continues throughout the track sounds very much like the martial art called capoeira. In that respect, I think it's somewhat groundbreaking. I haven't known anyone to include that kind of music into their own. It works very well for Brazilica, which has to be my favorite so far. You can also here a couple other tracks based on this beat.
