New Bloc Party - "The Prayer"

The good folks at Vice have given us a treat for Thanksgiving in the form of a stream to an official version of the lead single from A Weekend In The City. The album's leak was a headline grabber, but kudos to the label for responding by giving everyone a band-sanctioned listen at the highly anticipated album from one of our favorite acts. Kele speaks about "The Prayer" via MP3 soundbyte, noting how they "pushed ourselves to the limit of what we were doing as a band." We can't really make out the rest of his quote. Probably he's saying it's awesome and you should listen to it? Stream here.

I think it's great. Not that I've heard the whole album or anything........

Definitely an improvement, too, from the first album, in every way.

Judging from the first 30 seconds, it sounds like they've been listening to a lot of TVOTR.

Silent Alarm blew my frickin' socks off the first time I heard it.

After hearing "The Prayer", I just turned U2 back on and went on with my day.

Rather disappointing. Hopefully they have something a little more exciting up their sleeve with the rest of the album.

seems kinda weak compared to their last "first single".

i hope the album is better than the single.

seamus - it's not. you can find it on the web and be just as dissappointed as i (and many others were).

so it looks like tv on the radio will be the only somewhat "commercial" somewhat "indie" alt-rock band from this 00's generation that actually improves on their second album. can someone prove me wrong here?

I was a horrible victim of the leaked album....and it was a poor choice to be their first single.

in response to all your comments:

deez - are you on drugs?
jervo - TVONTR would beat you up for saying that.
nick - sounds like you've gone from the frying pan to the fire.
chris - you and i should be friends!
seamus - your hopes will be dashed.
jay - Look beyond your shores. Check out Aussie band Dappled Cities Fly - Granddance. A brilliant sophomore album.
daddy - we should start an ex-bloc party fan support group together.

ps stereogum - i love you

i don't know, i kinda like it. it does remind me a little bit of tvotr, mostly becuase of the vocals in the beginning. nice chorus, though. i can get used to this. i haven't heard the rest of the album so i am not sure what it will all be like but this is a nice start.

It sounds like a re-remixed version of Like Eating Glass, nothing more, perhaps something less (Like Eating Glass gets better and better with time, especially as an album opener; not sure how this one will fare).

I quite like the song. I think it is good (and different...nothing pains me more than hearing a new single that sounds EXACTLY THE SAME as the rest of a band's stuff).

And watch...once Pitchfork starts raving about "A Weekend in the City", everyone will be talking about how much they love the new album.

Agreed tommy, also enjoyed it thuroughly and I only semi-liked silent alarm. What is it you guys don't like about it? I think it's a good step in a new direction without leaving their old style behind completly. I haven't listened to the leak album though but don't plan to either.

The Prayer is track 4 on the new album. It is perfectly placed but I also dont know why it is the first single.

Either way... the album as a whole; f'kin kicks ass. For me it seemed a step above a second album. just wait, it may not have as many "singles" but its gona rock a stage...

PS.Kreuzberg is a piece of gold.

This first leaked song is going to be their best chance for a lot of air play. I have the rest of the album and it does actually stay in the key of Bloc Party. Yeah so maybe they diverge a little and try something new but hell if it was all the same as the last ones im sure everyone would still bitch. Artists grow, its part of being an artist. These guys are just trying to make some well deserved dollars and I think this song will help them get there. Just relax and wait to get the whole album.

sounds like bloc party to me, two more months of waiting.

I think it's wicked, really different from the first album and a definite evolution of their sound. I fucking love you muso cants who sit there waiting for new music to come out so you can deconstruct it, ridicule it and compare it to some obscure reference point that obvioulsy only you cravat wearing fop shit bags would know or care about.

i think the prayer is a superb track and a weekend in the city a fine album. I think bloc party have revamped their style with elements of prog in their. quality

Bloc Party was already doing the low throat vocal thing on the first album. It's not TVOTR's influence. I think this new single is really good.

I didn't like The Prayer to start with, but it is a complete grower, I love it now, it's a good song, and they've progressed, rather than sticking with the exact same sound of the last album

Hey,
as we have moved on several months, I can tell you that I do like the new album, but is nothing in comparison with the first one.
I went to a Bloc Party concert a few days ago in Cologne, and that really blew my shoes off.
They were very good, never mind the second album.
