New CocoRosie - "God Has A Voice, She Speaks Through Me"

thubmnail icon: New CocoRosie - "God Has A Voice, She Speaks Through Me"

A year after The Adventures Of Ghosthorse & Stillborn, the sisters Casady are back with a digital-only single, "God Has A Voice, She Speaks Through Me." We're told Bianca and Sierra are working a new album, which will be out in 2009, and that, like "God.." it will involve "exploring spiritual dance music, driven by oceanic and apocalyptic themes." So, kinda like last time, no? It's also mentioned that "Until then, the girls will continue their endless summer journey, one that has taken them to beach side studios around the world, where folk musicians from Madagascar and Reunion Island gathered to lend their hands in creating the future lives of CocoRosie." This should provide some fascinating sonic, textural overlaps. For now, we can offer "God Has A Voice," an instructional auto-tuning paeon to Mama Nature.

Speaking of voices, part of the charm and emotional tugging of The Adventures Of Ghosthorse & Stillborn were the fragile, idiosyncratic vocals overlapping with fragile, colorful lyricism (tales of intimate escape, private languages and rituals, communing with simple beauty, etc), so the vocal effects take a little getting used, though almost immediately they do make it all the easier to dance. And, after a half dozen spins? This song offers some supreme springtime anthemics. Keep your eyes peeled for the video, which is due in a couple of weeks.

"God Has A Voice, She Speaks Through Me" is out digitally via Touch & Go. There'll be a 7" picture disc out on 7/8. You can pre-order that here.

I like it... but... it sounds less like the unstructured cocorosie we know and more like a hybrid of imogen heap, sunscreem and yoko ono.

No, this doesn't work. Some of their earlier work sounds warm and fuzzy, almost like some old blues record with some modern twang. This sounds cold and polished and the effects on the voice at the end push this one over the edge.

what makes the song awsome is the clash between the dance-floor sound and the theme: suicide.

is the band/song really so terrible or is that what pitchfork brainwashed you into thinking with their pot shot reviews?

The differences between musicians and entertainers is art. Look at Madonna has she really ever reinvent herself? She does have a new on look every album however her music really doesn’t change. Now look at Tori Amos no two albums have ever sounded alike. Same goes for CocoRosie, Goldfrapp, and many other artist. Theses artist do not compromise and that is how they flourish.

Just because something sounds different or an artist is moving on and evolving doesn't mean the new stuff should be liked no matter what. I prefer what earlier work of theirs I have heard. I don't like this song. Sometimes artists change for the worse. That may not be the case here - it could just be a crap song.

i've seen them live more than a couple of times and am always amazed at how much fun they are and how musical they are. they're real pros, making use of lots of intruments and effects in some really exciting ways.
this song threw me and i hated it for the first few moments because of the autotune....then i gave it a couple more plays and am totally digging. it.

er well i'm a bit late, but i don't get why people are hatin on the autotune. cocorosie have always had an element of irony in their music, from wanting to be someone's beaten-up housewife to their covers of songs like "turn me on" and "i wanna fuck you". i personally like the use of the autotune here, but i also think they could be poking at artists like snoop and t-pain, taking the irony to the next level, y'know? whatever fuck yall this song is great

who cares about the autotune/vocoder? the cocos make their own rules anyway. this one is a little more polished and commercially oriented, but lacks none of their trademark sensitivity and politics. likely to complement the more nuanced and gritty stuff on the album and that will keep the fans happy. gets my vote!
