New Devendra Banhart - "I Feel Like A Child"

That's as in "I dropped my lolly," not "Yes, Glen, a child would be simply yummy right now," as previously alleged. It's the poppiest song off Cripple Crow, all set to hook people who couldn't get behind the tootle-ootle stuff on Banhart's earlier albums. You can hear way more than 4 tracks on it, and it's full of silly couplets ("From being my daddy's sperm to being packed in an urn, I'm a child").

Devendra Banhart - "I Feel Like A Child" (MP3 link expired)

Thanks to Brooklyn Vegan for pointing out today is the album's street date...see this Pitchfork review for detailed coverage.

You've mentioned Pitchfork in 2 out of your last 3 posts. Try reading some other material or just, you know, make stereogum a Pitchfork "feature."

It's true, this site only has 3 posts.

Any suggestions?

No reason to get defensive. But since you want to be a dick about it, 2 can play at that game...

Thanks for the breaking news there, Jim. The album has only been leaked for over 2 months now. Any updates on that new Beck album I've heard so much about while you're at it?

I usually find Teen People's taste in music blogs to be impeccable, but now I'm just not so sure. You guys better watch yourselves if you don't want to get busted down to Tiger Beat.

Not to change the subject, but have any of you clicked on that Jessica Simpson thread recently? I just noticed that someone had added something recently. I'm not sure if it's a joke (and well done sirs, if it is) but If you read the last 50 posts or so your brain will melt.

Topher, I was just noticing the same thing. It's hilariously sad. If anyone wants proof that the mention in Teen People was bad for Stereogum, that's exhibit A right there.

All you Indy Rock Boyz and Emo heads are starting to get ridiculous. Whenever something from your precious little cumunity gets any exposure to turn around and dis it. So now you hate the 'Gum becuase it got some press and a you hate any of your twerpy depressing rock groups when they get a little press. God forbid more then five people like something does that mean it sucks... You man Mozart really suckls because more then five people like him... Yeah the Verazano Bridge is totally over because like more then five people drive over it.

Oh, and Drake, you might want to check out CocoRosie's Noah's Ark, too, which came out today. It's kind of like a cross between Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom.

Oh yeah... thanks Nelson...I forgot about that one. I always end up missing the Touch and Go stuff initially because they're not in Rhapsody.

Calm down, bubbles. I don't want to get into a whole thing here, but you're off the mark with your criticism. Allow me to make an analogy.

Say there's a coffee shop I like hanging out at. The coffee's great, they're always playing great new music, and I meet interesting people with whom I have great conversations and they introduce me to new things I might be interested in. Anyway, one day the place gets a mention in the local junior high's school newspaper saying it's the coolest place in town to hang out at. Suddenly, it's being overrun with 13-year-old girls who take up all the tables screaming giddily to each other hopped up on caffeine, requesting the new Britney be played over and over again.

Am I wrong to like the place less given such a scenario? It's not because I don't want to like what everyone else likes or consider something inferior simply because it's popular. The quality of the place has declined because of its newfound popularity and the nature of its new clientele. I might still stop by once and awhile if they continue to make good coffee, but I will no longer stay for the ambience.

And that's why I don't consider popularity amongst Teen People's readers to be a good thing for Stereogum. The forums become a waste of time (see the thread Topher linked to) and eventually, it's likely Scott will start catering the content to the newfound visitors in order to keep growing in popularity and to increase ad revenues. I hope that doesn't happen and he continues to serve up good coffee so to speak, but we'll see.

nelson, that was maybe the lamest thing anybody ever took the time to wrote. maybe it was the dumb analogy, but it just reads like a whiny little bitch wrote that while crying and refreshing this site 44 times in another window.

and the people making fun of the Teen People thing, stereogum hasn't changed and your criticism comes across as envy because you know sterogum is laughing all the way to the bank with each mention in the press.

I don't think the content's changed, myself. And I don't think the majority of the readership has either. Personally, I just was blown away that there was this thread highjacked by Freshman study hall.

I mean come on, I don't have to come up with an elaborate analogy to say that a little piece of me dies inside whenever I read something like this:

cheers i know wot u mean, bam luvers?! yay thats me!! i think im crazy coz all my friends think he's alright bordering on not so good, r they blind!!!???!!!!
oh well hig hugs for ali, paige, cassie and gemma xxxx
luv zepher-girl mmmmm bam-flavored-lollipops should b invented!!! i think he'd taste like sugar and success but i guess u'd burn ur mouth coz he's just that hotttt.!

Is that pronounced "Hot-tee-tee-tee" or "Hot-tuh-tuh-tuh"?

Or maybe just "Hah-TUH"?

I believe the correct pronunciation is "hot with four Ts," although "hot-tuh-tuh-tuh" is acceptable as well.

that new devendra song/video is terrible. that shit is the most lightweight, lame white-blues i've ever heard. even black crowes fans would think it was pathetic.
maybe the rest of the album is better but stupid lyrics are still stupid lyrics even if they're written by a dude who's impressed you in the past and who is friends with cool graphic designers and fashionistas.

Actually The lyrics are quite interesting in "I Feel Like a Child." There's more thought put into them than most every 'pop' song that's about right now. But that's all I'm going to say, because I don't want to get into a fight about how great of a musician Banhart is.

In other opinions that I have, Paul McCartney's new album is excellent, Everyone should check it out. Seems he can still write amazing songs.
