New Doves - "Jetstream"

thubmnail icon: New Doves - "Jetstream"

In early December, when we posted news about Doves then-untitled fourth LP, we said the first single would be the -- in Jimi Goodwin's words -- "wistful ... quite emotional" "Kingdom Of Rust." We now know the album will also be wistfully, quite emotionally titled Kingdom Of Rust, but the lead track has an entirely different name. The band describes "Jetstream":

Being fans of the Vangelis film score, 'Blade Runner', we always wanted to write an imaginary song for the closing credits on Ridley Scott's classic... It's called Jetstream...

The five-and-a-half-minute track is pretty dark, though it's definitely more emotional and anthemic than your standard replicant fare. If you pass along your (or an enemy's) email address at Doves' website (thanks, Rob Z.) you get a free download of the track.

Kingdom Of Rust is out 4/6 via Astralwerks. It's available for pre-order, where you can see a tiny image of the album art, Doves fanatics.

I definitely appreciate the idea behind the track, but the song fell a bit flat for me. Amazing production as always, but the song wasn't there.

Been dying to hear new Doves material for almost 4 years now. I dig this track and I heard several other new songs from a bootleg from their UK tour last September. Kingdom of Rust is an amazing tune.

Tour the states !

interesting song...could take a while to build but i'm digging it. i didn't like anything on some cities, so this is promising.

It's good for an album opener. I listened to it 5 or 6 times today on my commute and it got better each time, but as a stand-alone song I'm hoping there are better tracks coming. Some of their stuff doesn't translate well outside of the full album experience.

In response to woozefa, Some Cities is a masterpiece. Kingdom of Rust has a lot to live up, especially since followers were treated to a 4-year wait.

interesting. when i read the title I thought of New Order, and in a way, it does resemble them. another album i'm looking forward to!

It took me a couple of listens, but I'm starting to dig the new song. It's certainly different from their opening single from their last album, black and white town. I thought some cities was okay, but not nearly as good as their first two albums. It's funny though, from all the talk coming out of U2, jetstream sounds like a song they were striving for.
