New Doves - "Winter Hill"

thubmnail icon: New Doves - "Winter Hill"

We went from no Doves to an entire flock of Doves in no time. The reintroduction began with "Jetstream" and then it was album four's "wistful" and, yes, "quite emotional" title track "Kingdom Of Rust" proper. Those were followed quickly by Push Me On (Playgroup Megamix)" and "Kingdom Of Rust (Still Going)" remix. You know, it's nice to follow tweaks with something straight up and pure, so here's the appropriately snowy "Winter Hill." It opens with a sort of pop Reich repetition and then slides into a chilly Doves song.

Kingdom Of Rust is out 4/6 via Astralwerks.

Vocals are standout, else somewhat lackluster.

Great song, I like this a lot better than the title track.

This is my favorite album thus far for this year. I'm not kidding. It's amazing. It isn't as "in your face" like their album The Last Broadcast. But it's an exemplary showcase of an album that has diversity and cohesiveness. The perfect blend. All the songs are great and original and they all sound great together. It takes more than one listen to finally "hear" it but when you do...

I recommend this to anyone who liked any of their earlier records. This band has been phenomenally consistent throughout. Checkout everything they have made if you have the time.

phenomenal album....epic and beautifully layered...doves have never made a bad record anyway, but this takes them to another level

The melody is a little like "Words" from Last Broadcast but I like it a lot. Damn I love
these guys. Can't wait for the tour.

After listening to the whole album a few times now, I can safely say this is the best Doves record to date. I honestly believe, in a perfect universe, this album would be as big as 'Viva La Vida' but alas, it is not a perfect world and these guys do not get the recognition they deserve. To me, Doves are what Radiohead would be today if they hadn't discovered lap tops. I love Kid A, don't get me wrong. Please srersogum, give this a premature evaluation it deserves and include the following adjectives - lush, sweeping, epic, claustrophobic, sparse, jubilant, defiant, scared, dark, chaotic and beautiful. Man, buy this record if it's the last thng you do, please.

It's a decent album, but I'd give it about a 7/10 overall. Definitely not their best album. I think the Doves previous album "Some Cities' is better.

So this is a straight-forward song and not a remix? If it's the former, is it too soon to sample The Chemical Brothers? Or maybe just odd because they're Doves peers. Either way the "Sunshine Underground" bit at the end just doesn't sit right with me.

i'm surprised that the new doves album is really THAT good. 2009's Elbow, anyone? 3 excellent albums and then all of a sudden the 4th one is even better.

Agree with everyone here. This album doesn't stop. The words 'dense, epic, inspiring" are ubiquitous when describing records anymore, but I cannot think of better words to describe this record. Couldn't help myself and had to get an early copy, but the CD and LP are already on order. Doves-see you in Detroit.
