New Echo & The Bunnymen - "Stormy Weather"
The band's 9th studio album (10th if you count the sans-McCulloch Reverberation, which you shouldn't) came out this week, and they're giving us a preview with this free MP3.
Echo & The Bunnymen - "Stormy Weather" (MP3)
I have to admit: I know all the Echo hits, but I'm not as schooled on their catalog as I'm sure many of you are. So Echo fans -- we know you're out there -- is this band still vital, or should we just revisit our beloved Ocean Rain?

The song sort of reminds me of marshmellows coming out of the corners of a room, to kill you with sugary goodness.

there is some great stuff on here, some songs that really stick in your head. it's very reminiscent of 1987's self-titled disc in spots, very sparkly. there's a bit of repetition lyrically.
but live, they're still an amazing, amazing band. totally vital and menacing and rocking. and ian mcculloch still wears sunglasses, leather jackets and chain-smokes throughout.

Reverbation was a GREAT album. Admittedly, not a great showcase of the echo and the bunnymen sound. However, it was pretty good on it's own.

Sibera is a good-sounding album, that has all the E&TB traits, but the songs are kinda weak. It's almost as if they said, "OK, let's write one that sounds like 'The Cutter.' Now let's write one that sounds like 'The Game' and one that sounds like 'Rescue.'" But if you're not listening closely, it sounds great. It's better than their last one, Flowers, for sure.
BTW, Mac's commentary tracks on the Anton Corbijn Director's Label DVD are pretty funny. For the "Seven Seas" video, he groans through the whole thing, at one point saying "God -- this is Cringe City."

I wrote about the new Echo album a few weeks ago. I think it's a strong release from them, but not as vital as anything from their first phase (which ended in '87 with the S/T album). Some good songs from the new album are "Parthenon Drive" and "Sideways Eight".
It's definitely an album worth listening to, but it won't replace Ocean Rain or Heaven Up Here.

At their peak (79-84,) the Bunnymen were untouchable. With Pete dead and Les gone, I think their creative peak has passed, but Mac and Will
have pulled through with their best record in ages.
Hugh Jones (who produced Heaven Up Here) really captures Will Sergeant's excellent guitar work better than anyone has since their reformation and Mac is in fine voice.
The new one is worth picking up. Parthenon Drive, Siberia, Sideways Eight and Scissors in the Sand are my favorites of the bunch.

The new album is awesome, and we're lucky Ian 'n' Will're still doin' it.

I lik ethe new album a lot. It reminds me of their second latest, "Evergreen". And I dug that album immensely.

It's a pretty good album, but smoking has taken a horrible toll on Ian's once golden voice. In concert this band still kills! I saw 'em 3 times last year and each show was awesome. Ian is one of the most temperamental singers in concert, so be warned...if you go see them on the upcoming tour...SHUT UP and show some respect during the songs. Ocean Rain is just phenomenal live.

Siberia's a good disc. A little too sappy, and it could stand to have at least two fewer ballads, but there's some vital Echo cuts here...."Parthenon Drive," "Sideways Eight" and "Stormy Weather" are all as good as anything they've done since their 1987 disc.

I've only given it a few listens, but overall it's a solid release. I think it's too much to expect them to come up with anything as brilliant as their first 4 albums. After all, they're in their mid-40's now and don't really have a full band contributing to the songwriting. It's just Ian and Will, with a few backing musicians. Ian, since Ocean Rain, has always been more into melodic, poppy stuff, while Will has always been in the psychedelic, freak out thing. In recent years Ian's pushed the band, with Will only being able to do his thing here and there. Ya'll should check out their Electrafixion release - great, grunge inspired tunes (can't believe I used that word!) and they do a killer cover of the Stooges "Loose" on one of their b-sides.

Siberia is superb...great work, and as always, the Bunnymen continue their charismatic sound and influential legacy. I hope people can finally recognized their legacy as Chris Martin (Coldplay) has, and bring the Bunnymen to the front line as one of Rocks greatest groups. Mac's voice sticks and is always memorable. Will's sonic guitar melodies and rhythms are one of a kind. Hugh Jones scored. Every track carries the maturity, the poetry and coolness expected. You really have to dig your ears into their music to fully appreciate it, and you will recognize how influential these guys have been to so many artists of our times. I can't wait for their live performance. Cheers!
