New Fiona Apple - "Why Try To Change Me Now?" (Cy Coleman Cover)

thumbnail icon: New Fiona Apple - "Why Try To Change Me Now?" (Cy Coleman Cover)

Fiona Apple seems like the sort who has issues with excess life drama. Also, she makes a living on it. So the Jon Brion/Mike Elizando fiasco surrounding her last release Extraordinary Machine may have been jarring, but also perversely satisfying? (I took psych as an undergrad, don't worry about it.) Either way, aside from a one-off soundtrack contribution to Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas 3-D (and who knows when she hit the studio for that), and a couple of comfy interviews with friends Quentin Tarantino and Zach Galfiananananakis, it's been all quiet on the Fiona front. So covering a legendary jazz and Broadway composer for a tribute EP is probably a perfect way to slowly reemerge and work on the EM followup I'm dying to hear. Especially when the song is called "Why Try To Change Me Now?"

(Thanks for the tip on Fiona Apple, Teco Apple.)

Fiona played Largo at the Coronet Theater for the That Was Then And This Is Now: A Tribute To Cy Coleman EP's release party, so that is heartening. More info at cycoleman.com. Now for some history: Here's Cy doing the tune written for Frank Sinatra on the Art Ford show:

And here's three more versions of the song, the first by Beverley Kenney (1956), and the latter two by Frank in 1952 and 1959:

Still waiting for new original songs, but vocally, she's unparalleled. Great track.

Sweet Jesus get me a new album already. I don't need to have it immediately but just need to know that one is being worked on. That's good enough for me. 3 albums in a decade? Much too little.

Completely agree. I would love an album of jazz covers from Fiona. There's a rumor that she recorded some with Brad Mehldau a few years back. Who knows if it's true, or if Fiona will ever do a project like it.

Every day when I wake up I think, "Is this the day I will hear something new from Fiona Apple?" Thanks for making my day! She is one of my favorite favorites.

She's always had that smokey blues sex appeal of a voice. I always loved her cover of "After Your Gone", but this one is my new favorite! Thank you for sharing!

Fiona has been very quiet in terms of announcing anything because they're really not much to announce regarding her new album, but she and Jon Brion have been slowly tinkering away on the disc for months now and have played some of Fiona's new tunes together at The Little Room in LA and at Largo. and recently Sara Watkins of the band Works Progress Administration (and formerly of Nickel Creek) mentioned at one of her shows that she sand harmonies on a new Fiona song.

so a follow up to Extraordinary Machine is not too far away.
