New Foo Fighters - "Wheels"

thubmnail icon: New Foo Fighters - "Wheels"

You guys had a lot of good suggestions for bands deserving a greatest hits package, a conversation started when news broke that Foo Fighters were finally getting theirs. It's overdue for the Foos, a band that's consistently churned out tracks that were relative bright spots on otherwise-vacuous modern-rock radio playlists. ("Radio" was a thing people used to hear new music before the internet.) Dave Grohl's said his group is taking a break (ostensibly so his supergroup can break), but no Greatest Hits set is worth its weight in promotional value without a new bonus track or two. The Foos set will offer a pair, both produced by Butch Vig: the yet-unheard "Word Forward" and "Wheels," an all-American rocker which got its all-American debut on the Obama family front yard. It still sounds like it was written for a Greatest Hits package, which is to say it still sounds like Tom Petty, but then Dave's never shared his previous band's reticence to dominate the airwaves. There isn't a bar that goes by that doesn't feel calculated for effect and purpose. But then, there aren't many bands at their stage better at calculating. Learn to fly:

Foo Fighters' Greatest Hits is out 11/2.

Tracklist:
01 "All My Life"
02 "Best Of You"
03 "Everlong"
04 "The Pretender"
05 "My Hero"
06 "Learn To Fly"
07 "Times Like These"
08 "Monkey Wrench"
09 "Big Me"
10 "Breakout"
11 "Long Road To Ruin"
12 "This is a Call"
13 "Skin and Bones"
14 "Wheels"
15 "Word Forward"
16 "Everlong" (Acoustic)

Notable omissions: "I'll Stick Around," "Walking After You," "Next Year," "Let It Die"

Not the first time Dave has played a Tom Petty song. After playing with TP on SNL, he was nearly offered a job in the Heartbreakers. But I suppose it worked out for the better that he didn't. Cool song though.

I agree, there is a very big Tom Petty sound to it. I like it! I'm just hoping their "break" is a short one

I agree with Joeyt. This song could have been a lot worse. At least it's not as forced as most of the last record. I'm really looking forward to hearing the other new song. Hopefully it will fit in more with the rest of the compilation.

I wish they would move back towards their cover of darling nikki, or even their cover of band on the run. those are both badass.

this sounds like Train. the riff is ridiculously generic as are the lyrics. i've never expected too much from the Foo Fighters, but upon hearing this i had to remind myself that dave grohl used to be part of Nirvana.

Choco Orange, you obviously didn't see the Wimbley show with Dave playing drums with Led Zepplin and also vocals. Don't hate because you are not a musican. I challange you to name one singer, writer, guitarist, bassist, drummer and all around good guy, with the talent that Dave Grohl has.

Is there a lifetime achievement award for fleecing the public - nonchalantly steering an entire generation of subversive music listeners into buying the most average mainstream drivel? Who signs your pay check Dave?

Hey now, I would not consider their first album mainstream drivel, that album rocked. Half of Colour and the Shape was good too.

I like the new song! And pretty much everything else the Foos have ever done! Top top band.

Disappointing MOR effort from a usually excellent band… it’s blatant filler material. They’re still one of the best live bands of all-time though…

I loved this song the first time i heard it on the white house lawn, and now i realize why, it does have a tom petty feel to it. I never connected the two...i am a big tom petty fan so anything that sounds like heartbreakers is great. Never liked "big me" but been a fan of all everything else.
