New Iggy Pop - "King Of The Dogs"
A sequel to "I Wanna Be Your Dog," right? Not really. "King Of The Dogs" comes from Iggy Pop's forthcoming solo New Orleans jazz-influenced album Préliminaires, which was also inspired by the French writer Michel Houellebecq's The Possibility Of An Island. That's well and good because when Houellebecq's good -- see The Elementary Particles -- he's fascinating. The single's out digitally now, backed with "Nice To Be Dead" and "Je Sais Que Tu Sais. (That's the single's cover art to the right.) If you've always wondered what Iggy would sound like by way of Preservation Hall, your strange little wish is granted:

As I said in my own track-by-track review last month, I think Préliminaires is the coolest album of the year so far. And it's not nearly as jazz as the press release claims. It's definitely not The Stooges, but there are some obvious rock and electronic elements in it. Some of the songs reminded me of The Gothic Archies, Bauhaus, and White Lies.

As influential as Iggy was, the big open secret about his career is that the vast majority of his solo output is fucking horrible. I used to own six or seven of his records, until I realized that I couldn't get through any of them except "The Idiot" and "Lust for Life". And I still can't believe that a reunited Stooges recorded by Steve Albini could possibly have sucked as hard as it did.

This definitely sounds waaay too much like Tom Waits. Somehow its okay if the same pop-lines are reused, but when you try and sound like Tom Waits, you fail. Its akin to trying to sound like Neil Young or Leonard Cohen.

oh wait...with all the access to anything online nobody does research anymore other than things they already know...Well that track King of dogs is the only song like that on the record..Iggys not T.Waits "im a wailing drunk Irish poet [super motivated international music movie star] guy.....but, hes done his part for music ...Hal Cragin produced this and I love what he did with the crystal antlers...
