New Jack White & Alicia Keys - "Another Way To Die"
With the Jack & Coke commercial and requisite sell-out/contract interpretation issues behind us, today we finally get to Jack and Alicia bond, James Bond. Billboard told us the White Keys track featured JW as songwriter, producer, and drummer, but they forgot to mention he trades vocals with Alicia, too. Actually there's very little trading going on; "Another Way To Die" sounds like Alicia stepped in at the last minute of Jack on a studio bender after a week-long 007 marathon.
Think Jack's found his new foil? Alicia seems to -- she wants Jack on her next album. Quantum Of Solace hits theaters 11/14 (10/31 in the UK). Noel's already campaigning for the next one.

Funny you mention "Fallin'" because that was the song I was comparing her voice to -- that was different from this one. She belted more range in "Fallin'", here she's just wailing like Jack. Don't get me wrong, I love Alicia Keys, but I was expecting more... huskiness.

Wow, this sinks to the bottom of all of the soundtracks for me. The main thing about a Bond song is it has to have a soaring, propulsive energy, a wide-screen, expansive, cinematic, narrative feeling. This, by contrast, constantly arrests the forward motion with herky-jerky inserts and rhythms. Will anyone walk out of the theatre humming this? No. Bleagh. Love ya Jack, but your t-shirt says it all on this project. Huge opportunity lost when Winehouse flamed out. Perfect marriage of talent and franchise. So sad.

I think thats the point though. These last two Bond movies are about Bond before he becomes the suave super spy all the other movies protray. It's grittier more "jerky" He's not slick yet. I think the song compliments the feel of the movie. I think its a great song catches your attention instantly as something familiar but like you've never heard before. I do think they could have used a number of other female singers and accomplished a similar feel. Maybe Joss Stone . But still a good song.

I don't like either of them, but this is ok. I certainly wouldn't have the balls to try and write a song that hold its own against "Live and Let Die". Though it might have been better without Keys. Her voice just makes it sound like every other bland Bond song done in the past 20 years.

That being said, I don't mind this track at all. Easily the best Bond theme in my opinion since View to a Kill (though the bar has been set pretty low....Chris Cornell, Madonna, Garbage and Sheryl Crow all failed in creating anything memorable).

I saw an interview with JW where he was talking about Seven Nation Army, and he said that if he ever was asked to write the James Bond theme, it would be that. So while this song is no where near as great as that one, it's solid. It definitely fits the feel of the trailer. The James Bond movies with Daniel Craig are a lot grittier than the old ones, and I think this song reflects that while still keeping the spirit of a James Bond theme song.

I'm sure some will say that this is a matter of opinion, but Jack White IS a real rock musician. He's not about trying to prove his mettle to nay-sayers, he stays true to himself, and brings passion to everything he does-and is the 13th best guitarist in Rolling Stones Top 100. It might be his self-trained sound that turns you off, but rock is not all about showing off like a prick. And don't even start on Meg White. Just read what I wrote above.
And I can safely say he's more talented than you in the guitar dept. I just saw him live yesterday and he filled me with glee.

This song is massively bitchin'! My initial reaction was "Alicia Keys & Jack White?! What the hell?", but this song has invaded my skull. I like Keys, but some of her songs can be hit or miss (love "Fallin'", "You Don't Know My Name", dislike "Karma") and I have slowly been feelin' The White Stripes over the last few years, but I would never have imagined that the two of them would pair up to creat something this ferocious. It's yoked-up, sexy, brutal but elegant, full of lovely surpises (his guitar skills are incredible and her repeated, one key stroke throughout the song is simply very cool), but rough 'round the edges...just like our current James Bond. (And yeah, I think that was very intentional.) Plus, they both look incredibly hot as hell in the video (they DO have chemistry), so, yeah, I hope they work together again.
