When I first heard Jay'Z freestyle on the radio I was like yo...this is some hot stuff....not only is the beat hot but he has a deep meaning, a type of mystery that makes you wanna know is who is he talking about. Jay-z always keeps you thinking and at teh end you she just you know what this is what makes Jay - Z who he is. Jay- z has proved again that no one can ever be on his life he is and foever will be the best rapper alive

Corporate America means he's a business man now, with his designer clothes, shoes, and his 40/40 sports bar in New York.

Jay needs to stick to his business side of his success then making music, only because people will get tired of him being on songs thinking he's coming back, teasing us then people will really start to diss his ass he's already up there in age any way

Jays talking about the rap game when he says "summer" and hes talking about how hes in the business side of things now. hes also dissing game when he says "i aint none of these half-ass newcomers"

he is talking about the rap game but, hello "jigga held you down 6 SUMMERS" like he said on "heart of the city(ain't no love)" from the first blueprint album. I mean he has had a song out every summer since he first started, so yeah it has a lot of meaning. Corporate America is him being the head of Def Jam, which is doing well (the "a lot of action" part). You gotta love Jay-Z, show's he's still got it and I hope he does come out with songs every now and again so the haters won't forget that!!

Ya'll really don't get it. He's literally talking abou the summer season. He has been the soundtrack for the summer for the last 6 summers like the previous poster said. He's basically letting everything out in this letter to the summer. Then he says he hopes the summer is as good to his people (Memphis Bleek, Young Gunz, Beanie Siegel) as it has been to him.

Ok, so you need a some Norwegian hip-hoppa to explain this to you?! Fine!!

If I remember correctly, Jigga has put out an album every summer. I'n this song he is saying good bye to the summer, which he refers as the rap game. He is basically saying good by to the game:

"I'm done for now, so one for now
Possibly forever, we had fun together
But like all good things, we must come to an end
Please show the same love to my friends"

He also says thanks to the game and his fans, and he hopes that the game and the people out there will treat his friend/proteges (whatever) like he has been treated.

He also explains that why he won't release no album at least this summer, is bceause he is a businessman now. And yeah, it is corporate america/def jam (whatever) that he refers to as his bitch, not some woman.

I would also like to say that this is a brilliant and moving song; Gotta love it!

Also keep in mind that this song is originally a frestyle which he dropped at hot97 because he was angry at people who stole lines from him to make there own songs better (ref. Cassidy - I'm a hustla, TI - bring em out) He also used the freestyle to get back at Game (the rapper). He say's in this sort of remaking of the freestyle that "Sorry Lance, I'm just trying to advance my quotes". He is improving his radio freestyle.

Well, by for now, I'm done for now, maybe I'll be back next summer somehow... :)

Ok. I take back what I said about Jay having released an album every summer, but he has at least had a song out every summer, and has been "out there", on the market, showing off. Ok?!

Just one more thing:

"I ain't none of these half-assed newcomers, you know how I do summer"

here you clearly sees that he disses The Game, he also refers to "How we do".

The song is an open letter to the summer. Jay is hot and snaps always. I think he is talking about Fat Joe when he says kid!! you gon make the boy hov put ya name in a song. I also think the part about him still loving people and them not loving him and the drunk uncle is about Dame. The summer put him on his feet with Hard Knock Life and he is just saying goodbye to the season he has dominated year in and year out. Hov is the g.o.a.t. No question. He always upped his paper and made the right moves. From hustling he went to rap. From rap he went corporate. Making more money every step. He dont look at rap as rap, he look at rap as a hustle. Same with corporate america. Its a certain way of living and a certain way of life that he exposed everyone to. honesty, integrity, loyalty, things of that nature. Only people who are real listened. Fake people dont want to hear something that makes them think about their life and how they're living, they just wanna dumb out all the time. Anybody who thinks Jay is all floss is ridiculous. Like he said on "Ballad for the fallen soldier" this is about life right now.

This song is Jay Z saying goodbeye to the summer, a season where he is always on the radio.

This song also gives out a warning to Game, not Fat Joe, ( for subliminal messages that Game may have taken at Jay Z is songs ).

And this song also lets HOV tell you that he is a businessman, (which is something that I have been saying for years ), HOV is all about business, he's a hustla, he pushed music just like he pushed weight, it's all the same to him, BUSINESS. And now he's got his foot into the corporate world, his new bitch.

But anyway, like all of his songs where he's telling a story or giving a message, it's HOT!

I dont think jay-z is talking about summer at all. I think when he says "summer", he reffering to his rap skills. That hes retiring , in the game as a rap artist. ANd when he say "he think that we need some time away", he's talking about rapping. Also when he says They say if you really love something it wil come back, hes talking about his rapping skills again. Listen to the song and think about.

Posted by: Ashley at 05/26/05 2:19 PM | Reply

Okay, but his rap skills never left him, so why would it ever have to come back. Jay Z didn't retire because he couldn't rap anymore, he retired because his work was done, it was no more stories to tell. Plus he moved on to bigger and better things.

This song is all in all refering to the rap game, but it is dedicated to the Summer, because that's the season that he feels shows him the most love. A see you later to Summer and the Artist part of the industry.

HOVA does it again, like previously mentioned people, Dear Summer is his olde to the rap game. JAY z does it again, by using summer because that is when he tours and usually this is where he drops his albumns. This song is not his best, but mearly his most interverted, this would fit perfectly on "The Black Album" and jay z again is showing people why he is the king of new york. He clearly warns the Game to stop messing with him and he seems to actually show that he is accepting leaving the rap game.

Alot of times jay changes who Summer is. On point he is talking about Dame. When he says You gotta let me go I know you put me on my feet but you gotta let me go. Dear Summer is figurtive. You all have never heard the saying before? He's not talking to The Season He's talking to The rap game, The rapper Game, and then Dame. The first part is a freestyle he did on radio. The second part is newer.
See it's going to be the introduction on Memphis Bleek's new album. Just Blaze did the beat, one day Jay was justlike Keep it going. He had the record but he didn't have no where to put it. So he mad it Bleek's intro like a lot of other roca fella artist do.

Whoever said Jay-Z is mad people are stealing his lines obviously has no brain. Nobody stole "I'ma Hustla" or "Bring 'em Out". Both of those tracks were done by Swizz Beats, a VERY good friend of Jay-Z. And I hope ya'll realized that when u sample someone's song, if their voice is on it in plain audio, its even harder to clear the sample cause then they can ask to have an official 'feature' on the track. for instance, if he wanted to be a bitch about it, "Bring 'em Out" could've very easily been credited as T.I. FEATURING Jay-Z, and the same goes for the cassidy song. However, being worth damn near half a billion dollars, and being good friends with Swizz, both samples were cleared. So nobody "stole" anything.....who'd be that stupid to steal samples from an album not even released a year ago...from 2 rich ass producers, both of who are so tight with the artist they dont even charge?!?!? can you say "CAREER-ENDING LAWSUIT" ?

"ya gotta let me go"

meaning the summer has to let him go and be the business man that he wants to be. in the beginning idk he might be talkin bout game.. but no one really knows. but i know he is talkin about the ACTUAL season summer whenever he refers to it

While Jay-Z has slyly denied taking shots at the Game, some believe the semi-retired Brooklyn MC subliminally targeted Game in his freestyle "Dear Summer" on Funk Master Flex's Hot 97 radio show Monday (Feb. 7).

Jay-Z appeared on the station two days later with Roc-A-Fella artist Memphis Bleek to dismiss rumors of a conflict.

In his freestyle, however, Jay made numerous references using the word "game," rapping: "You saying my name to entertain your crew/I ain't playing no games, s**t, the game's through," and "You playing a game you know you can't win/Quit playing them childish games with grown men."

Jay-Z insisted that the freestyle was simply an ode to summer, since many of his albums have thrived during that season, according to him.

"That wasn't getting at no one," Jay said of the freestyle, audibly amused on-air. "The rhyme that I said actually was a love letter to summer."

Dear Summer has two meanings. Basically, keeping up his summer season song, but in the deeper meaning hes talking about the business, talking about 'summer' I think when he talks about newcomers its just a broad statement to all new rappers whos think they know, but they don't. This is a crazy track. Jay's on top- even when hes retired.

Okay, for all y'all askin bout the sample, i dont kno what it is BUT it is also found towards the end of Game's exhaustingly long new track "300 Bars." In this song Game makes a blatant attempt to appease Hov: "Bring ya ears a lil closer, before u call this a diss, n u make Hova pissed, y would I do that when I'm just a new cat?" However Game still takes shots at Memphis Bleek because he feels that Bleek is undeserving of the title of "Jay-Z's sucsessor." N I'm pretty sure this track was released post-Hot97. Still most of the song is directed at 50 n G-Unit.

As for the original "Dear Summer", Jay was obviously takin shots at Game, I mean come on he intentionally used the word game like 10 ten times in his flow. I dont kno but I think these two may be in for a Nas vs. Jay style battle. Seems like these two cant help but keep takin lil shots at each other n then dismissing them, come on guys admit it!

Check out Hov n Game on the same record on the track "Get Your Money Right" Supposedly it was gonna be used on Dr.Dre's Detox album, which was reportedly shelved. But I found this track a while ago n it's hot as shit! Dre, Jay, n Game all gettin along...what happened! lol

He even threw in an insult about Lance "Un" Riviera, the man who Jay was convicted of stabbing. This song leaves no doubt the Jay is still number 1

The Sample is Lenny White - Morning Sunrise. This is the dumbest tread ever. I found it because I was looking for the track that was sampled. I had the cd but it was upstairs. I went to get it after reading this crap.

jay is blastin the game on "dear summer". no, not the "rap game"... i'm talkin' ex g-unit (or g-unot, howeva you wanna call it) "game". clear as day, yall... listen up, damn! need further proof? hear game's 18 minute-long cut called "300 bars and runnin". you'll see how the "game" got a lil sample of dear summer when he's referring to jay.

Yo I think Jay is hands down the best after Biggie and Pac. I mean Jigga can leave the game and still come bac wen eva cuz his flow is crazy like that. He'll be bac, shit, look at Dear Summer. That shit is a freestyle but sounds like a regular ass song. The Game is a dumb ass nigga. I believe he has no respect for the hip hop game. He need to respect this shit. I mean you ain't Nas homie. Wen Jigga says i got a new bitch now, corparte america...... He referring to corparte america, duh. Not Beyonce, jus sayin that the media is on his dick and he needs a break from them cuz even tho they made him they jus annoyn' as fuck sum times.

I met Jay-Z this past summer and he is a really cool guy, I can't stress the word cool... I was in Toronto at the RocaWear headquarters and the CEO of Rocawear Canada had a party for him there. When Jay Z walked in he acted like any other person at the party. He was smiling and shaking hands. I was DJ'ing at the DJ booth and he walked over and shook my hand. That is really cool of a man of his status to come over and meet a new face in the game. It was deffinatly the best summer i ever had.
