New Laura Veirs - Year Of Meteors

Last year I told you to buy Laura Veirs' Carbon Glacier, but judging by the comments only gambling spambots were interested. To my surprise the Seattle alt-folkie remains fairly unknown. That'll change when the blogosphere hears Year Of Meteors, out 8/23 on Nonesuch. Simply outstanding, especially the first half.

"Galaxies" is the best track.
Stream it here.
Dig that synthesizer squeal on the chorus.

From the songwriter's press kit: It took three of us. I hit the key, then Steve brought the volume up and down, and then Karl did the modulator thing. Karl was trying to do it by himself but it was too much for one person to handle. It's funny that the three of us needed to be there to make that work. In fact, you can see what we did on our website under the 'videos' section. Watch (.avi).
Terri Timely (who did clips for Joanna Newsom and Wrens) is directing the music video.

Veirs has a distinct pop sensibility, never trying to outweird those shaggy nufolk acts getting all the press these days. Think Mirah covering early Suzanne Vega. She gets under your skin on the first listen.

Order Year Of Meteors here. L. Lo doesn't leave Nobu without it.

Anyone seeing Sufjan Stevens 9/8 - 9/16 should get there early for Laura! New Yorkers: she's at Joe's Pub 9/7.

I have a feeling that that album was photoshopped into "L. Lo's" hands.

Actually, I imported "Carbon Glacier" after hearing the songs from your post last year. i'm kind of upset I'm going to miss her w/Sufjan this go 'round, but the new album is one of my "can't miss" deals, and I'm happy she has adequate distribution this time.

"galaxies" IS the best song on the album, but "black gold blues" is my second fave track. actually, i totally love the whole album, not just the first half. i absolutely can't wait to see her at joe's pub. there better be t-shirts.

I like Laura's new record a lot. I enjoyed "Carbon Glacier" but even after a few listens this one seemed like a stronger album to me.

Laura will be in for a live session @ WOXY.COM on Wednesday, September 14th when she hits our neck of the woods on the tour with Sufjan.

Galaxies is NOT the best song you foolish fools.
It is one of them, but certainly doesn't surpass Magnetized, Where Gravity Is Dead or Secret Someones (simply for the drumming alone).

Love her record. It's in my top 5 of 2005. Secret Someones it my fav track. Too bad she didn't make it to LA with Sufjan. Doesn't look like she'll be making it here any time soon = unfortunate.

Ohh, Scott. Laura Viers is *so* snore pie with yawn sauce -- her vocals are really weak and the songwriting makes Death Cab look deep and meaningful. I actually returned _Carbon Glacier_ to the store, that's how much I hated it. I wanted full store credit to scrub the memory of its awfulness from my brain. Mirah totally blows her away, as do the tragically overlooked Nedelle and Mia Doi Todd.

I'll give the new disc a shot, but I'm not holding my breath.

'Carbon Glacier' was amazing and this new one looks damn good too. I'm sad about all those elves from hell getting the press while excellent songwriters such as Veirs get only basic attention.

Just saw Laura at Southgate House with Sufjan. Great show, but her set could have been longer. Blew me away when she was playing electric guitar and started doing this Grateful Dead-type feedback. Did some very Neil Young suonding stuff, too. I don't think there's a weak cut on the new CD. Love 'Rialto' and 'Secret Someones'
