New Long Winters - "Ultimatum"

Lately DJ Sarah has been spinning Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta," which is cool 'cause '90s nostalgia's so hott, and I've realized I still love that song.

Perhaps some of you, like Sarah, didn't realize Danger men John Roderick and Sean Nelson are now in The Long Winters?! They've released two must-own power pop LPs on Barsuk. A new EP is out 10/11, and here's the title track:

The Long Winters - "Ultimatum" (MP3)

If that doesn't grab you, download four earlier tunes here.

Sean Nelson quit The Long Winters after their last album because he reformed Harvey Danger. So it's just John Roderick!

This is one of the best songs I've heard all year. The new EP has been playing non-stop in my house. Hopefully the Winters will get some of the love they deserve.

I think Jordan is right. In fact, Harvey Danger has already played a few live shows.

If I was at a club and that song got played, I would leave. What's she gonna play next, "Closing Time" by Semisonic? "Mother, Mother" by Tracy Bonham?

Ah -- interesting! Good luck Harvey. I met Sean once, nice guy.

The Long Winters are truly one of the most underrated bands around. I heard a rough version of "Ultimatum" at SXSW this year (where Sean & John played a set together, the breakup aside), and I love how it's turned out. Just lovely.

Come on Stereogum, get on the trolley: Sean Nelson's back with Harvey Danger and they've got a new record coming out!

keep up the good work gumsters....
definitely agree with michaela about the Long Winters being underrated. Actually picked up one of their earlier CD's awhile ago by mistake (thought it was something else) and fell in love with their music....

"the long winters have some of the best stage banter i've ever heard."

I'm afraid it's suffered since Sean Nelson left. John Roderick should hold tryouts for a new bantering partner to stand on stage and play the tambourine.

The new Harvey Danger record Little By Little comes out on Sept 13th, and it is incredible.. They should have a tour in the works in the next couple months if you don't live in the Seattle area. Little Round Mirrors is one of the best songs I've heard in a long time

And if the Ultimatum ep is a glimpse of what the new record will sound like.. i expect great things from The Long Winters.

i actually think the new HD is the best of their three. it comes out tomorrow. the second record, King James Version, was a great nervous breakdown kind of record, but it's very hard to find now. first record is fun in a half-earnest/half-sarcastic power pop kind of way. they're good. it's nice to see that people are giving them a chance.

the long winters are also great, but it seems like the magic is gone from their live show without sean in the band. the records are amazing, can't wait to hear the new EP. "ultimatum" is beautiful.
