New Mark Carson - The Black Parade
We hate when labels send us shit via Airborne Express. It means we have to get up off the "couch" and put on "clothes." This morning, however, after a too-early knock at Stereogum HQ, we opened the door to find a manilla envelope on the floor. No delivery man.
What was the mysterious package that had to get to us asap? The new album from Mark Carson!
Prohibiting promo leaking by not only watermarking the CD, but giving the band a fake name!

Or maybe Warner just doesn't want us to listen to it? If that's the case, they've succeeded: the protected disc doesn't play in our computer, and we sure as hell aren't going to "stand up" and "dust off" the stereo.
Mark Carson's The Black Parade hits stores on Tuesday. David Fricke found a CD player and seems to like it.
In lieu of MP3, check out (again) MCR's latest video, while we try to dig up the Che-Tsi album Roc-A-Fella Records messengered us last week.
UPDATE: According to reader Paul, this has been done with Sigur Ros. Andy writes in to share another example, and theory:
Also, re: today’s Mark Carson item- I remember Blue Note doing the same fake name thing with Norah Jones’ Feel Like Home. The thought behind it is this: it’s not journalists that leak albums online, it’s unpaid interns who swipe the records off editors and writer’s desks. This way, the new My Chemical Romance disc isn’t laying around the office, the new Mark Carson is. And what intern is gonna steal the Mark Cason record?Makes sense! Fuckin' interns. If you've got more examples of artists' promo monikers shout out in the comments.

I think Sigur Ros did something like this once. Anybody know anything about it?

Hey, does anyone know if Sigur Ros ever released a promo under a fake name? If so, did it have anything to do with fish? Just curious.

far too busy to read the five comments above me, so i don't know if anyone has pointed this out yet, but sigur ros did the same thing with takk. i don't remember the name, but it was something to do with fish.
ps: acutally very much looking foward to the black parade.

Didn't Sigur Ros do something like this? I don't know what is leading me to think this, but something tells me...

I feel like... somehow.. somewhere.. someone might have done this before.. Sigur Ros, maybe?
Has anyone else heard of this?

What a great way for a band to protect themselves from leakages. I think I recall Sigur Ros trying something like this, but not sure....

I guess it's a good idea, if you trust the journalist to actually listen to it in order to figure it out. Chances are it'll rot in some bin somewhere with all the other solo artist CDs they get. If you remember, this blew up in Sigur Ros' face when they released Takk.

... is there really a song on this album called "Dead!"??

F'n interns, but I'd blame them too if I worked at a label and leaked a record accidentally by giving it to my friend, who gave it to thier friend, and well, you know the rest... moral of the story, trust no one....

Mark Carson's first album was incredible. I saw him perform with Phish at The Something in LA. But The Black Parade totally sounds like a rip-off of what Sigur Ros did last year on Takk.

Axl Rose is doing the same thing for his new solo album. The promos all use the fake name of "Guns n' Roses".
Score = 0
Yeah, those comments were totally lame and SNL like. What they should have been mentioning is how Sigur Ros had a similar promo strategy for Takk. Oh, and a "ha" to the Axl Rose comment

Funniest comments section ever.
But how could you all forget about that time Sigur Ros did the same thing?
OK, now it's not funny anymore.

I am ridiculously anticipating this album like you wouldn't believe. Can't believe you got a disc and aren't bothering to give it a listen! Do you think you'll dust off that stereo any time before Tuesday? Give us a Stereogum exclusive!

As a graphic designer, I can say that Sigur Ros did something similar for their last album.

I've heard that Axl Rose really loves Phish Food ice cream. Confirm or deny?
Score = 0
Geez, this rumor is like a game of "Telephone" that's gotten out of hand. Axl hates ice cream. What happened was that he demanded that Buckethead start wearing an empty bucket of Phish Food on his head during shows, and Buckethead insisted on sticking with buckets of fried chicken. It led to a maaaaajor blowup, and Axl left the band for a few days, leaving Dizzy Reed as the last "authentic" member in Guns n' Roses. After a couple of days they decided that didn't make too much sense.

this video rocks, i mentioned this on another post, but obtusity.blogspot.com has a pretty interesting take on this both the visuals and the music.

I wonder if the fake name has anything to do with the meaning of the album. i googled mark carson and didn't find much but i did find out that mark j. carson was a mathametician who was a part of the manhatten project and helped to create the hydrogen bomb. coincidence? maybe... or maybe not!?

Man, Stereogum, when did you become such 'hot shit' that now you're too lazy to put a damn FREE cd in your stereo and give it a listen?? I'm tired of hearing all you 'elitist bloggers' bitch about the same shit. Don't forget, you wouldn't be shit if it weren't for the artists and labels that give you content to write about. I tell, I wouldn't piss on your blog if it were on fire...

As a fish, I just wanted to say that the Taquitos did this with their album "Mark Ros," which included the hit single Sigur Carson.
