New Metallica - "The Day That Never Comes"
If "Shackler's Revenge" didn't slake your thirst for the heroes of yesterdecade, here's another shot. As they've made unavoidably clear, Death Magnetic Metallica is all about bringing it back to the classic era. Clocking in at 7:56, you'd think this was the track to make good on that. And you'd be right! For the last three minutes. And if "bringing it back" means "rewriting old songs." At 5:00 "The Day That Never Comes" becomes the last half of "One." (Literally.) Before that, it's "Unforgiven" meets "Fade To Black." (But not really as good as that. James says: "Love is a four letter word / You're in this prison." We say: Ooph, James said that.) Kirk still shreds. In a sentence: new Metallica is derivative of old Metallica. But what did you expect. Hear it at MySpace. (They're also streaming that live version of ""Cyanide.")
UPDATE: Looks like Metallica no likey MySpace. You can still hear the full track at metallica.com, although you'll have to negotiate their horrible streaming player.

Song is incredible IMO. I don't think they are re writing as much as just following their old formula. If you're calling that a re write then we might as well say that One was a rewrite of Sanitarium which was a re write of Fade To Black. Day That Never Comes just sounds like another classic Metallica ballad.
Score = 3
I agree with wordabop in saying that they are following their old format. This is Metallica going back and doing things they way this used to be done...the 'Tallica way of kicking a$$.
Score = 0
not the worst thing they've ever done

this band is a parody of itself

That comment is a parody of an old Pitchfork review

First 3 minutes or so - nothing special. The last half was surprisingly strong. There may be hope yet...
Score = 4
I like this. Sounds like the post Black Album version of the band playing an ...And Justice for All-era tune. That is not a bad thing, and is a hell of a lot better than the last three albums.
Score = 2
think they'd might if i downloaded it illegally?

of course, i meant "mind." what a tool i sound like...

"So guys, for the new album I'm thinking we record all Load era type songs and then tack on 3 minutes of And Justice For All style jamming. That way, we please the fans and ourselves."
"Sounds great, James, our dumbass fans will never catch on!"

You read my mind, almost verbatim.

that would be funny if I new what Load sounded like.

"The Day That Never Comes" or "The Song That Never Ends" I don't see the connection between the beginning and the end and I like this band.
Score = -3
I definitely saw some similarities to their past work, but with all the crap that crowds modern rock radio, this song is really a breath of fresh air. Even if the last 1/2 of the song if 10 times better than the first 1/2. It still kicks ass! I really wasn't excited about their new album until now...it might turn out to be quite good...
Score = -1
i dont think they are doing anything bad as you all say...they are just taking the best of metallica and inserting it into this new (hopefully) kickass album. this is not one, not fade to black, not sanitarium...it is just "the day that never comes"... i dont see the reason why metallica has to take so much heat from fans. SO WHAT IF THEY WROTE THE WORST ALBUM IN THE HISTORY OF METAL (ST ANGER) GET OVER IT! and to those who find no connection between the first 3 minutes and the las 4 minutes....remember and justice for all....ride the lighting...THE BLACK ALBUM!!! men...you really should give this guys a break...
Score = 3
What I love is that for the past few years I'd read comments on stories on Metallica and everyone pissed and moaned that they don't sound anything like they used to back in the old days with the Ride, Master and Justice albums. Now every site I go on people are bitching that the song sounds like a re-write of a song from Ride or Justice. I think you need to get your heads out of your asses and stop looking for something to voice your worthless opinion on. Whether they don't sound like their old stuff or they do, they just can't win with you people. Get a god damn life.
Score = 15
I'm not sure whether to laugh, or shake my head until it spins around. The main gripe that I'm hearing is that the band is being accused of deriving their new material from........*gasp*.......THEIR OWN SONGS! Oh, say it ain't so! Forgive my sarcasm, but I've heard this "They need to get back to their old sound/It sucks because it sounds just like their old stuff" tail-chasing horseshit for the better part of 2 decades. Chances are; that's longer than most of you have been alive. To be honest, the song is not bad. The long intro drags the momentum down a bit. But once the song gets moving; classic Metallica. From the uptempo bridge to the 16th note bursts....and a classic Kirk Hammett solo to boot. Apparently you all expected sparks to shoot out of your speakers, the Earth to shake, and your acne to suddenly clear as if the heavens reigned down Proactiv. Instead you just got a solid song. Better luck next time
Sincerely,
Someone Who Was Going To Slayer Shows When You Were Going In Your Huggies

This song is great. I really like the lyrics. They reflecting a deep feeling wich i'm familiar with. After St. Anger wich was a completely fall down of a hero they are standing up. This song could have been better but is good enough to be great for me.
Score = 2
I'm not going for the "Ooh it's OLD Metallica again!" or "Boo they're copycats of themselves" school of thought, but instead, my objective (okay slightly subjective - I'm a fan!) opinion:
The day that never comes is a refreshingly good track from a band who've had a - shall we say - chequered history... Reminiscent of previous 'Tallica shit, the song builds progressively into a fairly heavy, and pretty damn tight riff-o-mania, á la ...Justice era.
The lyrics are powerful, the guitars set to 'stun', the drumming shit as ever (my question to Mr Ulrich, who I respect btw, is: "Well can ya do that live, then, buddy?"), Mr Hammett seems back on form ("Guys, I'm honoured - you want ME to do a SOLO on a Metallica song???"), the arrangement is good, although I found the riffing grew tedious at around 7.00, but overall... fuck yeah!!
Now, I have to do it... in comparison to St. Anger, which, with myself not being musically talented, I can't call shit (but it was shit!), this is a fuckload better. Lars is using real drums this time! Maybe he saved money with the Fisher Price kiddies set last time round, but they were terrible. This time he sounds brilliant (for him).
The biggest improvement for me though is my man Mr Hetfield. His vocals on St. Anger weren't great, and the improvement on this song is definitely noticeable.
Finally, please remember guys - these dudes are in their 40s, they ain't spring chickens any more, we can't expect Hit The Lights-esque thras anymore.
Score = 4
i really, really wanted to love this new track. i've followed metallica since '85 (ride the lightning) and have seen them go at times from hero's to zero's.
i like the beginning of the track, although it seems to take an eternity for james to start singing, i like the "to live is to die" type harmony stuff going on during the chorus bit, but the last 4 minutes or so really, really drag and sound disjointed. this song could've been easily shortened to 5 to 6 minutes without any real detrimental effect.
still, i will buy it and will buy the album.
long live Metallica.
Score = 1
On first listen I was surprised how "different" it sounded and then of course I started to hear the Fade to Black and One type parts and the last few mins I was just smiling... On further listens, i love this song. It is very refreshing. I really don't hear the Load era as a few people have said. It is way more musical than that. Its def Fade to Black meets Unforgiven meets One meets New. I'd have to skip that whole Load reference... This is great, dying to hear the whole album.
Score = 1
Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets and And Justice For All are basically the same album rewritten three times. That's what Metallica does well!
Score = -2
you must be simple minded, how many albums have you ever written. Ride the lightning, master of pupets, and justice for all are three different sounding albums altogether. you call them rewrites the rest of the world calls them the best heavy metal albums of all time. how old are you anyway, did you have to listen to your older brothers cd's to know what they sound like
Score = 0
Its such a pleasure and privilege to have so many ignorant critics on Metallica music. I've seen the Puppets/Ozzy tour, Justice tour back in the mid and late 80's, and the Summer Sanitarium tours in the new era, and I assure you that noone in the crowd was cheering any more or less for one song or another. To have a true appreciation for Metallica goes far beyond monotomy of Master/Ride songs brought iinto the new era or complaining about the snare drum can effect on St. Anger. Why don't all you diaper rashed teething little runts stick with your own generation of "every album sounds the same: tha breaking, saving, benjamin's, and amos'. When you turn 18, tell Mom you want permission to go to a Metallica concert and then come back with a little pigment in your hair and a couple wrinkles with a ligitimate opinion. Until then shut up. Death Magnetic will be a new expression on its own merit and will sound great live.
Score = 5
it sounds like a part 2 of fade to black. that song was about suicide...and since this is more uplifting, maybe this is that day that'll never come.
Score = 1
It's not perfect, but I like this track better then any Metallica track put out since Justice - there's riffs on here that I actually want to play. I've never liked Jame's new singing style, although the music on here is good enough that I'll probably buy my first Metallica record since the Black album that disappointed me so much.
Score = -2
With all the mindblowing underground metal that exists now, why would anyone give a shit about Metallica? So they started to suck... big deal. It's not like you can't find other bands making much better heavy music. Boris are heavier than Metallica ever were, plus their vocalist never sounds like a saucy redneck.
Score = -2
Last 4 minutes look like guys are just jamming, it reminds me of "Mercyful faith" cover song, but still, I like it, I'm really happy to hear riffs just as the riffs on Justice album. Guys can still kick some ass!
Score = 0
I think it is important to point out that I, thousands of fans, and Metallica do not give a shit whether anyone likes this song or not. So what is St. Anger sucked and ruined their original sound? It's THEIR sound, and they can play fucking lounge music if they decide to, and to hell with all who don't appreciate it. If you don't like it, fuck off. There are a few thousand real fans who will bear with them for every one of you underaged faggots who think you get an opinion.
Score = 0
The problem with this track is the simple fact the band sounds completely and utterly uninspired. There an absolute lack of passion or fire in the any aspect of the performance-- writing, playing, singing, or otherwise. Its flaws have nothing to do with the fact it may reference, be derivative of, or even recycle ideas/riffs from golden-era Metallica. It's bad because it has 4 minutes of mindless, phoned-in, paint-by-numbers jamming tacked onto the end of an already lack-luster track. Painful.
Score = 2
the song is no longer posted. There is nothing to comment about.

I partially agree with matt. As much as I've tried to like this song I can't help but find it mediocre and, yes, uninspired. I find it surprising given the fact that Rubin is a respected producer that -at least in my opinion- the song has so many flaws. The first thing that struck me at first listen was that the intro, rather than getting me hooked on to the song, instead had me waiting for something interesting to happen, that was a bad sign. I found neither the guitar melody nor the vocal line to be "memorable" in any way. As for the outro, it just doesn't feel natural or coherent with the first part of the song. It really gets tedious as it progresses because it just sounds as if they threw in as many riffs as they could come up with but just for the sake of doing so.
This comes from someone who appreciates the Load era. I really thought they felt more comfortable at their age doing rock, since they obviously couldn't re-invent metal. Other bands like System of a Down, for me now have taken the torch. I just feel like Metallica is trying to hard to please their fans - who have given them a lot of pressure and shit - and at the same time prove to themselves that they can still be the best heavy band on the planet. I really hope this record has more inspired moments.

Awesome.....Can't wait to hear this album blasting out of hoosier's pickup trucks.

I'm going to pirate the hell out of this album. There will be no hell left in this album after I have finished pirating it.

I think that people who diss the 'load' era show their ignorance far more than they'd want to. Load was a great fucking album. Metal? Nah, not really. But it was a solid rock album that kicked the bejeezuz out of other rock albums of the day that were just starting on down that generic road that lead to shit like Nu-Metal and Limp Bizkit. Wake up! Heaver does NOT equal better. I could play you 20 bands 3 times as heavy as metallica ever were and not a fraction of the band. St Anger had its merits, but it wasn't what I was looking for. I love classic Metallica and I love Load. This new single to my ears is the best Single Metallica have released since "Until it sleeps" which is a kick ass song in my books. The boys are rocking and writing good tunes, and Jaymz's voice is sounding fucking great!. There's a reason these guys have been around so long and if you could stop trying to be clever and / or controversial, you would maybe find out for yourself what it is. Otherwise you could always pull out your old papa roach cd and light one up eh?
Score = 1
Anyone else think the drums sound awful?! Like, production wise?
I think the song is great, but when the drums come in I'm like WTF is that?!
Score = 0
That is precisely what I was thinking. Lars is clearly doing some interesting stuff, but they just sound meh.

I love reading and hearing all the different albums Metallica fans love, and hate. Fact is, no band has had this much success with Metal fans ever. Metallica will always be the biggest and the best.
Score = 0
The more I hear it the less I like it. After listening to "Cyanide", "The Day That Never Comes" feels weak, with no specific purpose at all. It's almost as a if they just thought of recording a Studio Medley I expect the rest of the album will have a more consistent sound and not just this sound that seems to me more aimed to please every fan or meet expectations other than their own. I will buy the album as they are Metallica and have done a lot of things for heavy metal, but in terms of credibility I think they threw that one down the drain a long time ago
Score = 0
Everyones' so caught up in wondering if this sounds like the Load era or pre black album era. Take all that shit away and listen to the song. The first half is an awesome melody and the second half is freakin nasty. But, they are two different songs. Metallica is so caught up in trying not to sound weak that they fucked this song up. Who in their right minds would think that this was the right ending for this song?????? I mean, really!!!!

You all need to stop holding your breath for another groundbreaking album from them. They gave us 4 of those in a row. How many bands can say that? If you want to compare them to another genre; they're the Rolling Stones of metal. Sure, at this point in their career; they're not going to floor you with their new material. Why? Because they've set the bar impossibly high. But; with every album they put out....a new part of their live show is added. I can confidently say that having seen both groups live. After all, that's what music is really about. Say what you want about the new material; chances are pretty good that the video for 'Enter Sandman' scared you enough to piss out the formula you were being fed at the time. All venting aside; open your mind for your own good. This is just a snapshot in a mosaic that has been their career.....not the entire picture.

Metallica sucks chicken and monkey dick. I'm going to steal this album from the store when it comes out, then I'm going to burn it and put it on torrents and limewire for all to steal. METALLICA SUCKS!!!!

Um... so let me get this straight... Metallica sucks SO bad that you are going to spread it around for the world to hear and appreciate? Interesting. Where did you get that tactic from? Dr. Evil?

It's funny how trendy it is to bash Metallica. People pretend to hate them, and then secretly follow links around online to post about them. Secret Metallica lovers. But they post bullshit about them so they can still be trendy and pretend to like obscure bands that nobody has ever heard of. Lame. "Troo Metal Posers" and lame ass hipsters. You don't like Metallica, then don't fuckin' follow the threads around about them. Because the people that do, type in the word "Metallica" sometime during the day. And it ain't because they hate them. And to P Brand, I hope you get fuckin' caught stealing that album. But if you succeed, go ahead and put the album on limewire. It's already there, and it will help spread the good word of a fuckin' awesome album.

Metallica rules, the album is awesome. All these bitches putting it down, go fuck yourselves, progressive is the word you fucking cunts. Once again, all you MFs who put the album down, go fuck yourselves.
