New Muse - "Undisclosed Desires"

thumbnail icon: New Muse - "Undisclosed Desires"

So far, the roll-out on Muse's forthcoming, fifth LP has conjured some unexpected associations: demanding a Queen reference and being inflicted with a Glenn Beck one. The fun continues today with "Undisclosed Desires" which again finds the trio referencing a far corner of their iTunes collection, working in a sorta Depeche Mode. It's hard to listen to the intro's pizzicato strings and backbeat without thinking "Strangelove," so I suggest you go ahead and do that. No big climaxes, crescendos, or pyrotechnics to this one, just some lean and tuneful Muse-ic For The Masses.

Here's its live debut, from the band's homecoming show in Teignmouth on 9/5. Note Bellamy on keytar.

The Resistance is out 9/14 via Warner Bros.

Seems like Muse´s new album has already been forecast as a failure, its not like they ever were very original. i´m still regreting Helsinki dates are sold out. . .

So it turns out Muse is not good at electro-R&B. Who knew?!

It seems like they've lost the plot...

Let's say the music to this song was a track on Jay Z's new album, with, um Rhianna or Beyonce singing the same melodies and lyrics. Pitchfork would love it. Since it is Muse, they will destroy this song critically. Am I wrong?

I'm not a huge fan of this song, but from the reviews I've read Muse decided to release the three weakest tracks before the album comes out next tuesday, so I'll still be buying The Resistance.

So it's not what we are used to with muse. You can't dismiss it just because it's totally different. If this was some random band, I probably would just glance over it, but it contains Bellamy's vocals, and they are sublime. So it's not going to be recognised as one of their best songs ever, but it isn't a bad one. Not in my opinion anyway.

Totally agree with Callum. The sound is definitely different but the production is, nonetheless, pretty fantastic. It's a shame they didn't do more with the live version of this one though. I would've loved to see them re-interpret it instead of just playing along to the samples from their record.

Muse is horrible, but at least I don't have people recommending them to me as frequently as before because they "sound like Radiohead".

Can't see their appeal .... I heard ADAM LAMBERT cover a couple of their songs and appreciated his rendition more ... especially "FEELIN' GOOD" ... I think he'd probably do a better job on this as well. Mattt Bellamy "breathes" too hard when he sings. JMO

Good. But muse is no Depeche Mode. The best album this year is Depeche Mode's Sounds of the Universe. If you like Muse, check out that DM.

I'm thinking this is a great song! A lot of people has said that this is not them or whaatever, but this is Muse. Muse has always been Experimenting with new sounds and stuff. I'm not forcing you guys to like it, but other people who said the same things make it sound like they want to listen to the old muse. which hardly makes any sense when you've waited for 3 years for this album when all you want is to listen songs like the previous albums.

This album is totally Muse. Muse is forever experimenting and I totally agree with Lilly. I think the songs are great. Matt gasping is his trademark and he does it deliberately. And real Muse fans would know that Muse live is what they are all about. They always improvise.

I think it sounds like a more Radio 1 friendly reprise of Time Is Running Out, really. Can't say I love it or hate it yet, but I don't quite see why there should be a fuss about them using some modern pop production techniques - they are, after all, a pop band. I'm just surprised Matt hasn't gone for the Kanye autotune.

Sounds like a band who had two amazing albums, suddenly became enormously popular and are now making processed garbage. RIP MUSE!!!

People who are judging the album by this song alone are idiots. This is actually the weakest song on the album, and it's still a million times better than most of the overrated junk out there. And even if you don't like the album or you just don't like the band altogether, you can't help but respect Muse for having the balls to do what no other band is currently doing. All the haters calling them sellouts and saying they sold their souls for record sales, can you name one mainstream act doing the type of music that Muse is making? I think not. If Muse were concerned about retaining their popularity, then they would've kept making the same music they were already making just to be on the safe side. But Muse isn't about playing on the safe side. That's for wimps with no artistic merit. Muse isn't called progressive rock for nothing. Their music is SUPPOSED to progress into new territories, and sometimes we'll get lucky and it'll be something brilliant, and sometimes it won't be so stellar but at least it shows that this band is truly fearless. They don't care about being loved by everyone, they just wanna make music from the heart. And they're damn talented, too. Can't say that about too many modern bands. And since everyone has taken to comparing them to Queen lately, I might also point out that Queen always took new directions with each album that they made, and for the first 8 albums it worked out great. Then they hit a bit of a dry spell in the 80s, but their fans didn't turn their backs on them. Even if they didn't like the albums, it wasn't lost on them that Queen was a brilliant, multi-talented band who dared to go where no band had gone before. That's why they're so respected and that's why they win my vote as the greatest band of all time. And that's why I love bands like Muse who go against the grain and do what feels right for them instead of heeding their critics. It's also worth noting that critics used to rip into Queen mercilessly, and that never stopped them from doing what they wanted to do. Besides, I love big epic rock music, and Muse is the only band making big epic rock. Go listen to your safe indie music if Muse is too much for you to swallow.

Oh yeah, and before you write off The Resistance as being a crap album, try listening to the Exo-Genesis three-part symphonies, which has also been leaked. Those symphonies alone make up for the entire album and is some of the most epic stuff ever made. Makes me love the band even more.

Like Smashing Pumpkins with 'Adore', this seems to stray away from a particular sound which made them so famous. I guess you could argue "if it ain't broken, don't fix it", but I really think this could be for the better.

Saying that, I'm also pretty worried - let's hope there are stronger tracks to come. I *really* want to like this new album.

This "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" way of thinking can hurt a band just as much as over-experimentation. After two, three albums of the same thing, fans can become fed up and start to question whether a band is really any good at all if they can't seem to move on to something else. Personally, I don't think Resistance will be Muse's best album, but I'm looking forward to it, and even if I don't like it, I'll still respect it, just for the sheer fact that this is a band that refuses to become stagnant. Besides, this won't be Muse's last album, so maybe they'll bounce back on the next record. Remember how divided GNR fans were when Use Your Illusion came out? Completely different from Appetite For Destruction, which alienated some fans as a result, but at the same time it sold really well and people respected GNR for proving how diverse they were.

I agree about the 3 part symphony, it alone makes the album worth it. This track is the weakest track on the album and it pisses me off that people are basing the album off this track.

@day n nite - totally agree with you there. I'm a total advocate for bands changing direction, despite the temptation of churning out the same sort of stuff album after album (Oasis?). I'm just preparing myself for loads of people to hate it because it isn't another O of S. Risk-taking and diversity, regardless of the outcome, wins Brownie points from me.

Muse is known for taking a new direction as their career progresses. From Showbiz to Origin of Symmetry, you hear a more metal/hard rock transition from Showbiz's piano domination. Absolution and Black Holes and Revelations are more of their "epic" sound coming through predominately. This trend has reached a climax (or a starting point?) for Muse's sound especially with the 3-track opera-type song Exogenesis. Altough I think that the band need to break new ground musically, I didn't really like what I heard from this album although I have only heard "US of Eurasia" so I can't really say this without more information. I will probably pick it up when it comes out.

Taken from "The Resistance" album review on clickmusic.com:

"The band have said several times over the years that it would be easy to stick to the standard pop-rock formula that made 'Plug In Baby' such a hit, but then they wouldn't be pushing themselves or doing anything different. And 'different' is the key word here. 'The Resistance' may not be better than their previous work, or even as good, but it certainly is different."

I hope you guys read well enough to understand that. The band said they're not the type to just stick to what makes them successful. They want to try different things, to continually challenge themselves as musicians. And like the review accurately put it, The Resistance won't go down as their best work, but at least it's not an album that regurgitates previous albums. Which they could so easily do, but they don't. There are so many bands that do that, why would you want Muse to be one of them? Hey, it's not like they sold out and agreed to have their album remixed by Justin Timberlake and Pharell Williams like *cough* Kings of Leon *cough*.

For some reason, in the context of the album, this song doesn't seem as out of place and strange. I just got the album and I think it's absolutely fantastic. While this isn't my favorite on the album, it still seems to fit and work better in that context than alone.
