New Nicole Atkins - "The Way It Is"

We've been tracking the nostalgic pop stylings of Nicole Atkins since her set opening the infamous Clap Your Hands Say Yeah/The National show at Bowery in September '05. Now, months after a label bidding war and countless hours in a Swedish studio working on her proper debut Neptune City, Nic's revealed the first track from the record, "The Way It Is" -- and we're glad to say it's her best songwriting yet, working her soaring vocal and blue mood into a dreamy, slowly-surging '50s-styled girl-group ballad. Bodes well for the record. Hear it at MySpace.

SXSWers can catch Nicole's showcase gig on 3/16 (at Copa, w/Au Revoir Simone) and at parties on 3/14 and 3/16.

Neptune City is out 6/26 on Columbia.

Sounds like another Dawn Barger debacle in the making.

i won't get into specifics, but i think Atkins music is quite boring and rather uninspired. What's worse is that someone paid Rolling Stone to make her an "artist to watch" in 2006/2007!

Anyway, there are SOOO many talented artists out there, i think there's someone else doing what she does better.

i also personally have met/worked with her and found her to be rather fake/lame (this was a little bit ago/not recently), so hopefully she has grown up some.

Mailboxheads. Fuck you all and your mothers. I wouldn't cross the street to piss in your ear if your brain was on fire.

I don't work with Nicole. Haven't really talked to her in about a year. I have no vested interest in her personally.

She is wonderfully sweet, hilarious, and the last thing I'd say is she's fake. Fuck when I knew her she was living in her car doing everything she could just to get some shows to play.

What's with picking on Dawn Barger, too? You think The Decemberists and The National are debacles? I can guarantee you I'm no friend of hers but that's chickenshit.

I forgot to add the song is fucking phenomenal. I heard she was working with Angelo Badalamenti; don't know if he had anything to do with the arrangements but this is great.

Nicole Atkins is one of the most honest people I've worked with and a true talent...I don't know where money would've come from to pay Rolling Stone...as I recall Atkins wasn't even signed at the time the article came out. Not sure where douche is getting his info, but probably the same place he's getting his twat waxed.

ok overhyped, who is doing what nicole is doing better than she is? for that matter, who is doing anything close to what she is doing? I bet your just some new york indie crybaby who isnt getting any attention yourself. do yourself a favor and grow the fuck up/shoot yourself in the face. Also, who is this "someone" that paid rolling stone? your comment has personal vendetta written all over it. so stop crying/start practicing your own songs. just because people think your band sucks doesnt mean you have to bitch about other people that are making it happen. oh yeah, the song is fucking great too. heavy duty.

Wow, could it be more obvious that the naysayers here are just bitter and jealous failures?

Anyone who "worked" with Nicole would know she's the most real person you'll meet..blunt, honest, and extremely smart about her music...I know, bc I've worked with her myself.

Great review by the way! The terms, "fake" and "lame" are always taken seriously! Ha, go cry in a dark corner.

i think nicole's songs are actually very interesting, and pretty different than the majority of singer/songwriter chicks out there! i saw a show last night at Webster Hall and the opening act was a singer/songwriter girl. had a great voice, good songs, nothing wrong with it, but kinda just what you'd expect and pretty much just like every other thing out there now. Nicole stands out in a sea of averageness and absolutely shines onstage! a born performer!
