New Nine Inch Nails: Definitely Not Emo

Trent Reznor's set to release the follow-up to With Teeth this April with Year Zero. From a recent interview with Kerrang! (via Blabbermouth):

"With this record I feel a lot less concerned about what people think about it — especially the dying record industry. I couldn't care less about that right now." Reznor also revealed that the new effort is a concept album and "part of a bigger picture of a number of things I'm working on. Essentially I wrote the soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist."
But how about some more angered quotes about today's music scene, Trent? You like emo? (via RS)
“Emo screamo!” he ranted in an oddly Dr. Seussian style. “If I happen to accidentally turn the radio on…I literally can’t tell the difference between one of 20 bands,” said a clearly exasperated icon. “Either I’m getting old, which is a fact, or I’m turning into my dad! I wonder about the person that’s in a band, the young kid who just got signed or is trying to get signed - why is he doing it? Is he trying to change the world and do something different and express himself…or is it because they want to fuck Paris Hilton and be photographed outside trendy restaurants?”

No, not Paris Hilton. Lindsay Lohan.

Hallelujah to his comments. Couldn't have said it better myself. Maybe that's why he's a legend and I'm stuck posting on music-blog message boards...

I think it goes without saying that no matter what he does, Trent could fuck ME anytime. I'm feeling a bit older and out of touch, too. Call me Trent!

Trent's first album was THE album that converted me from mainstream crap when I was in High School. And to this day, "Pretty Hate Machine" is still 100X better than the "flash in the pan" bands that are around today.

You rock Trent...a real artist, with real talent!

dammit, yes I have listened to "the fragile" stoned with headphones on, and now I want to do that right now, but can't since I'm at work, and that would be frowned upon.

As a guy who has been to two NIN concerts, the new album 'title' makes me want to punch myself:

'Year Zero'? Please, please be fake.

Wonderful news... Trent is a god. Great that he is so productive. Must be nice to be sober and focused.

The Downword Spiral is still pretty good, but Pretty Hate Machine sounds like it was made on a cheap Casio on display at Target.

nine inch nails was to me a group for those too weak to handle throbbing gristle and too behind the years to get front 242 or nitzer ebb. i absolutely fucking hated pretty hate machine when it came out, it sounded like front line assembly filtered through a pussy machine. i wish trent would sod off.

Okay, we're all VERY impressed with your hierophantic knowledge of all that is good and industrial, Edward. LOL!

April! Woo hoo!

Pretty Hate Machine sounds quite alot better on vinyl than on cd, wouldn't suprise me if a remastered version would be ok.
And yes, Fragile stoned with headphones rocks.

Trent led me to Autechre. Much better than that Throbbing Gristle crap. He's also a huge reason I do the terrible things I do today. An MFA. He should fucking pay for my tuition. Inspire me will he!

those who are still sporting double pierced ears and that use emoticons to accent their blog entries should really drop the attitude, jasonk.

Edward, you drop really big names in the hopes that people will be awestruck by your knowledge. Your elitism is unneccesary, and quite frankly, ridiculous. Art is interpretive. As someone who 'gets' Front 242, Nitzer Ebb AND Throbbing Gristle, I still recognize and admire Trent's ability to take elements from any genre, make something out of it that is his own and no one elses, and then have people sit up and say holy sh*t.

Can you do that? When you can, and have the back-up to prove it, post your reply.

Oh, and music I listen to, would make your ears bleed, but I don't shove it in other people's faces.

it all comes down to this, people change, thus their art, whatever the medium may be, also changes with them, its an expression of personal growth, some like it, others dont, thats all there is to it, the true artist or musician doesnt contort their message to fit the trends, the patterns, or the recycled crap, they put it out there with disregard to how it will be recieved.

that said, cant wait for the new album. see thats why its called new. for all of you who like to pick how the sound has changed, would you rather bands just kept releasing the same sounds over and over? its about taking a chance, and whatever, piss off if you dont like it, no one will put a gun to your head and make you listen or watch it.

I agree with Dr. Booze. That's what I like so much about NIN. I can go to my computer any day and with whatever mood I may be in find a song or two from NIN that lightens the load...or increases it. I dont mean to get off the subject, but people need to put that in perspective when discussing Korn as well. Everyone stopped liking them simply because they changed their sound.
I like the fact that when im arguing with someone about the quality of different bands, I can always end the conversation with "Yeah? Well has your band ever been studied at an academy?"

Long live the Reznor!
