New Nine Inch Nails - "My Violent Heart"

When last we checked in with Trent, he was railing at the industry, at emo, and promising the forthcoming Year Zero would be a "concept album ... a soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist." He didn't sound too happy. And the first track to surface from the record has him back to his devices, doing the speaking-then-searing vocal thing over a web of spare electronic beats and nightmarish industrial glitches. Hear it at Hype.

When I was a younger guy, I worshiped Reznor. As I got older, I started to get tired of the guy and the constant angst. Very predictable. With Teeth was a disappointment to me. Kind of seemed like he was making a pop record so he could recoup some of the money he lost to his manager.

With that said, I think this tune is cool. Reminds me of the song he did with Bowie, I'm Afraid of Americans.

Hope the record turns out to be good.

So is the attitude towards NIN one of My Chem mockery or mild enthusiasm? Or is it akin to the ever ambiguous Modest Mouse affection?

I think this album will suck. The song sounds so extremely uninspired that I am afraid that I'm going to hate Nine Inch Nails after year zero. Nine Inch Nails was my favourite band for years, but this is just too bad and embarassing.

what does everyone think about this alternate reality surrounding the album? I think it's a good idea as a marketing tool, i guess, but only die hard fans will get it with the hints he's dropped. no one else gives a shit.

thoughts?

Tony, I like the marketing idea. Reminds me of "Lost" nowadays, how there's more than what's in front of you to think about, if you feel like it. And if not, whatever.

Man, Reznor's music was such a part of my life growing up that I don't think I can really hate anything he does. I like this song. I hope the album is good. The phrase "Emo Screamo" still makes me cringe, though...

From what I've been reading recently about trent's, now five-year-strong, effort with sobriety, and statements about being "pretty much happy" in 2004 and 5, the disappointingly digitized, ultraclean, pop sound of With Teeth is totally understandable. I think the man was experimenting with feeling alright for a change, and it was necessary, I think, but as we all know, it's just not his sound. I don't know much yet about the concept behind year zero, but one thing is sure after listening to this first track, he has once again evolved the entire industrial genre, as he did in 1995 by making it accessible to popular and mainstream audiences. This time he's done it by creating a whole new soundscape of crushing steel, combined with explosive glitch noise, in a sea of cybernetic, post-mechanical decomposition at the hands of the human heart presence whose existence is threatened by such cold circumstances. In other words, the man's not licked yet! Hell, Johnny Cash made innovative music until he died in his late 80's! Right? I don't know, but what matters is that people criticized his sounds and ideas the whole way through. Trent Reznor has been no different thus far, and I'm certain that he will continue to create eardrum-shattering environments of noise that half of his biggest fans won't understand until he's dead in another 40-60 years.

Wow. Despite being almost totally amelodic and having sub-angsty-11th-grade-poetry lyrics, this is actually not terrible.

While I do agree with most of you about With Teeth sounding a little more like a pop album, I will disagree that it's a disappointing album. I take it many of you didn't go to a few of his concerts these past couple of tours? The songs sound completely different live, and it was hearing them live that really had me appreciating the album. Also the album had nothing to do with his "manager" and everything to do with his recovery from addiction. For those of you who may have missed going to one of the shows recently, you'll now have a chance to see what I am talking about by picking up Beside You In Time coming out in a couple of weeks.

I think that, yes, NIN has ups and downs, but maybe they are more notorious when the people are not used to them. Changes gives them a hard time and that´s not fair. I´ve heard almost all NIN work and Trent Reznor is one of the most admirable person for the music world. It´s in the trance from Downward Spiral to The Fragile, everyone expected a new "closer" or any other sound that remains the same, but that can´t be. Things changes and even With Teeth is really good, maybe not that brutal or anger sound that caracters NI, but it´s a fresh, even a little pop sound that provoques you to make a little dance. It can´t be that bad, it´s fun, and changes sometimes are irresistible and "My violent heart" it´s really nice and also kind of brutal, for the people who´s only happy with heavy sound. It´s great and i´m anxious for "Year Zero" deliver

@ Last Halo - Johnny Cash died in 2003, not the 80's - idiot.

To the idiot before me--Isobel--he said Johnny Cash died "in his late 80s" not "in the late 80s". Big difference. By the way, the new songs are incredible. Go Trent.

JTS, you ought to learn to read properly.

Last Halo actually said Johnny Cash died in HIS late 80s, foo'!

;)

Been a NIN fan for years and my opinion is the songs are alright, not amazing, but OK. I'm getting quite interested in the ARG though.

I have been a fan of Nine inch nails/ Trent( it's pretty much the same thing)for a long time.
I was dissapointed with the Fragile to be honest, but everyone else I knew loved it sooo much. All in All the Fragile, With teeth and all the remixes and signles in between have their moments that I enjoy.
Hell I walked down the aisle to "Leaving hope" and it was very dramtic and emtional for me. I think this new album will be perfect, if it's one thing I can count on with Nin it's consistancy and yes it's true some things he does you will only understand if you are a die hard fan. That's just how it is and Im sure everyone will have their opinions, Im just thrilled that it didn't take the usual 5-6 years between albums.

:)

I'm new to Nine Inch Nails, and I've been checking out some of this new stuff. Personally, I'm really into it!It sounds good, there's some catchy riffs in there, and all the ideas around this new album - the stories, conspiricies, ecetera - is very intriguing. Some cool ideas in there, for sure. Put it this way - I know I'll be getting the Year Zero album.
