New Nirvana - "Give Us More Of Your Money"

The "new" Nirvana disc Sliver: The Best of the Box drops on November 1st. It boasts THREE unreleased tracks, such as "Sappy," available for streaming below.

Nirvana - "Sappy" (Real Audio Stream)

Nirvana fans born before 1994 might recognize "Sappy" as the hidden track "Verse Chorus Verse" off the 1993 compilation No Alternative.

At least Beck has the decency to make it seem like we are getting our money's worth by offering a remix album. Maybe people will be more excited about the remixes.

Anyway, it's annoying that the (maybe) 10 songs worth hearing from Nirvana's vault are being released so greedily. And for the record, "Sappy" isn't "previously unreleased." Sure, it was technically a hidden track (titled "Laundry Room" in some spots), but the hidden track was the duet with a dead rapper of the early 90's.

I thought the DJ was the duet with a dead rapper of the 90s

This is Courtney's pathetic attempt to milk it for all it's worth. Is there material that's not on the box set worth releasing? I seriously doubt it. Most of the "fluff" that made up the box set has been on the internet for years.

It sucks, because "Unplugged In New York" was such a great swan song, and everything since then has been pretty iffy.

"Is there material that's not in the box set worth releasing?"

There is a very good (and very funny) version of "Do You Love Me" cut for a Kiss tribute album on C/Z records that was mysteriously left off the box. Probably easy to find through the usual file sharing sources these days. Given the nasty comments Gene Simmons has made about the band in the past, maybe keeping it out of circulation (and those publishig royalties out of Gene's pocket) is a good thing.

People still care about Nirvana?

'do people still care about Nirvana?'

Sucking desperately on Kurt's rigor-mortised cock is about the only source of nourishment MTV has had since 1994.

"Verse Chorus Verse" is a fucking bomb song, though. The best of No Alternative, which I remember as being a pretty strong comp. The Smashing Pumpkins song on that, "Glynis," is pretty great, too.

Interestingly, in the box set, there's a different song labelled as "Verse Chorus Verse."

There are a lot of great songs that haven't been released but they most likely won't see the light of day as long as Courtney is still in control of the estate and the tapes. The box set was geared mostly toward people who didn't know a lot about Nirvana, which is sad because they used mostly demoes and recordings of old songs people had already heard in place of stuff we hadn't. Toward the end of his life Kurt was really improving vastly in his songwriting and moving toward another level completely (look at the lyrics to Do Re Mi. That is some Lennon-type level stuff right there). The agreement in the lawsuit that brought all of this out called for a greatest hits CD, a box set, a best of the box, a live CD or DVD and possibly a rarities collection. I look forward to the day when all of this is over with and we're left with just the music.

Also, it just tickles me pink to see Gene "Firestarter" Simmons' name mentioned in a thread about a band whoring itself.

i love the rhythm and lyrics and everything about do re mi. that it is only a demo sort of adds to its ragged gem feel.

the verse chorus verse vs. sappy title argument has been going on for years. this song 'chere is officially entitled "sappy" and rules something fierce. always has actually, so i don't quite get all this "unreleased" garbage.

also the boards of canada remix is the best thing i've heard from beck in like forever. cept maybe that cover from "eternal sunsine of the spotless mind." just saying.

Stop beating my legacy like a dead horse, hoping more money will fall out. I think there is an unreleased tape somewhere of me whistling while taking a shit, why don't you give that the boxed set treatment Mr. Jimmy Iovine?

So, no one else is upset that we just watched Robbie Williams flicking his penis?
Everyone's cool with this?
Yeah?
Okay then, I guess.

i thought the box set was awesome, but it should have been the final chapter in nirvana's history. but you can bet that rhino and all the other labels who specialize in greatest hits packages will keep milking it..

some Nirvana stuff worth releasing is still available ... The Reading Festival live DVD may someday pop up, thats excellent quality

but why all the hate? the Pixies did the same thing releasing old demos etc ... the Beatles did it ...i've heard the Sliver cd and yeah it's pretty hard to listen to and they have pretty much exhausted the vault but still why the hate?

The box set was okay, but in the mid-90's someone assembled a one-disc bootleg titled -Pay to Play,- which was just about perfect. It included every Nirvana cut that hadn't been collected at that time (b-sides, compilation tracks, the early demo tape, and a few original songs the band only played live). Geffen should have just released that.

The No Alternative compilation is a cool CD, and it seems to get better with age.

Aside from the Nirvana track, the Pumpkins tune is great (as someone mentioned), as is the Matthew Sweet opener. As a huge R.E.M. fan, I also get a kick out of Pavement's "Unseen Power of the Picket Fence", which is a goofy, strange ode to R.E.M. and their second album Reckoning.
