New Police Album On The Way?
That's what it's looking like, according to Andy Summers. With such an unimpeachable catalogue, we hoped they'd keep the "reunion" to song revisitations, give or take a jazz odyssey. Oh well. Via NME:
The Police's guitarist Andy Summers has hinted that the band may get to work on a new album after their forthcoming world tour.See that? "...new album after their world tour" -- NME knew you wouldn't believe it, so they had to state it twice! The article goes on:The star, who attended a book signing and Q&A session for his memoirs 'One Train Later' in London yesterday (April 4), said the reformed three-piece would consider making a new album after their world tour.
The guitarist also revealed that the trio will be debuting some new material at their forthcoming tour, which kicks off in Vancouver on May 28 before heading to Europe in August.Okay, obviously we're excited to hear it. Shit, we'll even buy (ha) the new record. But you can't sell us on this being a good idea. Looking forward to seeing what Paul Weller's phlegm thinks about this one.He added: "If we do well with these concerts we may well make a sixth album. I can't see why not."

As long as there's a remix album featuring Lute versions of the new tunes, then I'm all for it.

I hope they just redo all their hits. I've been waiting for "Canary in a Coalmine '86" for over 20 years dammit.

this is really going to put a damper on the Oysterhead reunion, isn't it.

"Why?"
Why not? Beyond that, there's money, creative urges, portions of the fanbase who want a new album... there's plenty of reasons. Of course, duh, that doesn't mean it'll work. But still, there's plenty of justifiable reasons for a new one. I wouldn't mind hearing it, so long as it's not TOO bad.

Sting's son's band=Fiction Plane
Fiction Plane is an anagram of Infant Police.

There's no way the album could be good.

I'm all for old bands reuniting to make new music, rather than just milking the moldy-oldies circuit. But I find it hard to believe these three are going to be so civil amongst themselves that they could make anything as potent or long-lasting as "Synchronicity"...
The Police making new record = George Lucas saying "The world WANTS to see how Darth Vader got started!"
And yay for me for slipping in the nerdliest snark this site probably has ever seen.

If it happens, it WILL be DOO-DOO !

Sting was never as good as he was with the Police, so I don't see why it couldn't be good--although considering the directions they've all gone since breaking up, it could be a bloody mess too.
But I can see why creative people might want to do more than just replay their old material. At the very least, I wouldn't be surprised to see a live album that includes a few new things.

We aren't really fooling ourselves into thinking this will be good, are we?
I'll one-up you on nerd-nastiness DW...The Police making a new album = William Shatner saying 'But who WOULDN'T want to see us singing around a campfire?'

Every time an older artist or band wants to put out new material people are always saying "but it wont be like (fill in there best album here)." Here's your clue guys...it's not supposed to. People change , they're music will change with them, if the Police never broke up but continued to put out the same sounding material over and over again people would get tired and move on.
Its the exact reason why U2 doesn't play song in the same format as the Joshua Tree if they did , they'd be in a where are they now segment as opposed to still making music and STILL making millions and selling out arenas.
Ultimately it would be the consumer that decides.
Lets face it though ,they're not doing it for the money ,they're all millionaires many times over. They're doing it because they want to have some fun,and they are not too old to do it, so let them do what they do best and have their fun and we can enjoy the process.

JP, there's a big difference between The Police & U2. For one thing, The Police ended on a fairly high note long ago. U2 never ended even though they should have right around Pop.
For them to get back together all these years later it's hard not to have suspicions. Even putting that aside, most of these reunions tend to have bad results and tarnish the legacy of an otherwise great band.

You bunch of moaning, whinging old gits!!
The Police are the greatest band ever! Of course ANY new material they release will be huge and amazing.

I for one would love to hear a new Police album. You people are so jaded it's pathetic.

Well, The Police making a new album ??? Why not??? The Police are a better band in terms of ideas to make brilliant records, they are known for making very startling records, otherwise, listen to their albums !!!

I am glad there are some people with sense posting on this site. I wish people would just wait till an album came out and not try and predict how horrible it would be.
I have never heard a bad police album, and I never expect to.

Surely anyone would rather hear a new Police album then a Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, Robbie Williams, Gwen Stefani, or some boyband that only sells record because they can fill out a pair of jeans while dancing a semi-erotic version of the macarena...
Please, get some music back on the shelves. I would rather hear the Police then any of the current "new" artists.

I think with all these guys have learned in life musically, a new album might be better than you think. I've always been curious to hear what they could do with all the experience they've gained over the last twenty plus years. Musically, it would certainly be more than worthy, the question is whether or the song themselves could stand up to their old work. And remember, some of their old work lacks consistency and they might solve that problem this time around.

Considering the gossip of how badly the backroom animosity is during the tour, one thinks all three members will gladly grab their Gene Simmons Brand moneybags and run as far from each other as possible.

all three of these guys are some of the best at what they do. Police fans for years have been waiting for a reunion. It's happened and now everyone is going to say it'll suck!? You're all a bunch of freaks! Maroon 5, Incubus & countless other bands have The Police to thank their successful careers on. Why not while all still alive, they thrown down and write a damn good album. What's wrong with a damn good album? Give 'em a break.

Shoot, I'd LOVE it if the Police made a 6th album and I'd head straight to the stores the minute those CDs hit the shelves!! I'm only 15 but this reunion for me is a dream come true and I'd like to have a studio album as a souveneir. And all you whiny old geezers, no matter what the new album would sound like, it'll be a heck of a lot better than that rap B.S. they call "music"!! Besides, have you guys heard the album yet? I don't think so!

When I heard the news of the The Police reuniting, I was exstatic. I was a fan from the get go and when the curtain fell after only five albums, I was so disappointed. I regreted never seeing them live and beleave me after finally seeing them on Nov. 8 in Toronto, they appeared to never lose that magic. I think a new album needs to be made to give them and their fans the closure that was never given in in 1986. If these three can get back together after more than twenty years and still put on a show like they did, then a new album will be a breeze. Good luck guys.

Can't think of a single reason why they shouldn't record again. The Who came back 20 years later and recorded a pretty damn good album, with supposedly more on the way. The rock 'agism' is really idiotic.
Score = 0
After 24 years waiting for them to return to the stage (i was a little pretty boy when they broke up) i went to see them . Surely the best thing i've done for years. "Why shouldn't they make another album" is not the correct question... then , Why should they don't do it if they are the best band ever and we all the fans are waiting for it?
Music is The Police
