I have always thought the RHCP were one of the most overrated bands of all time. Still think that. This is nothing new. bleah.

Not good.

Which is too bad, because I really liked how they'd branched out on the last couple of albums. This song, though, just ain't good. And the video is worser.

The hook is very catchy in a modern rock radio sort of way, so that's probably why they decided to make it the first single. It's ok, but not a great Chili Peppers song.

Ok, y'all are some pretentious haters. That song is very good and is typical for a lead off single. I mean Scar Tissue was pretty slow and simple too and that was just a slice of what californication had to offer. Y'all need to get off the pretentious indie bands and listen to quality rock n roll. p.s. i like indie too so go shove a 2L pepsi bottle in yur ass.

I like it, it's catchy enough...Y'all. RHCP's last couple of albums have be good summer time discs that you can play anywhere because they're one of those bands that almost everyone can stand. But I'm not buying the album.

Radio-friendly first track. Kind of necessary to promote a double album in my op. Their best stuff usually isn't one of their radio singles, in my op. Listen on to the end for the Frusciante (purple hazy) payoff.

It's okay. I've soured on the RHCP after their more mellow, "mature" discs, but I still enjoy their crazy early songs. I like the "whacka-whacka" bass line early in this song, which is a breath of fresh air in their career.

But haven't they already done a song where they list off a bunch of states already?

Isin't this about a character, not the state?

Dani California is a character they use in alot of thier songs like in By The Way she is mentioned. "Dani the girl is singing songs to me"

So don't bash it because "they already done a song where they list off a bunch of states already?"

blah. As a huuuge frusciante fan, I can't help but feel disappointed. Track sounds too produced in a bland fm 'hit' sort of way. Their last few albums were interesting b/c they at least sounded fairly minimal, like a band playing together w/o a lot of studio tricks. I guess I'll have to hear the rest of the album before passing too harsh or a judgement.

Could this be a repeat of JA's Strays? A formerly great band reduced to modern rock mediocrity?

the video is good actually! it reminds me of those ultra high profile videos that premiered on mtv in the 90s like: IRONIC by ALANIS or SCREAM by MJ

when you've been making music for so long and everyone's grandmother knows who you are, it's difficult to please everyone- so you've gotta make a generic single that white women can bob their head to.

I regretfully admit to thinking RHCP were good when a HS friend copied the first LP for me in 1985. 21 years later, I find it to be the absolute worst band (that would be played on a station that I would listen to) ever. Anthony Kedis should get back on drugs, because sober is making him think he can sing. Time for a blogworldwide intervention. No more. Call your or email you local radio stations and tell them to stop playing it.

Dont be so uptight. The chili peppers are a great band, and have come up with some of the most orriginal songs to date. They are so much better than the bands that are out nowadays, like keane, embrace, snow pattrol to name but a few. you know what i mean. And of course the single is a bit slow. Its a crowd pleaser. Everyone has to be able to relate to it. Just chill out.
By the way (no pun intended) i am sooooo looking forward to the new album. its gonna rock!

wow...
i was so very excited for this single to come out, but now i can't see why. the chorus sounded really cool when i heard it in clips on the internet, but the video ruins it all. the could have done something really good with the idea and everything, but then they do the same thing as the backstreet boys, which bothers me a lot. i'll probably post this and then realize that there was some meaning to it, but right now, i think someone just went, 'so dani california... no idea for a video... i know! let's mock other bands' (even though motley crue deserve mocking, no offence).
i like the chorus, i just hoped the song would be more original. i dunno... i like their crazy stuff. where did it all go?
*shrug* oh well, i hope the rest of the album is good.

Is it the best chili peppers song ever? No, and if I said yes would any of you hesitate to slam Under the Bridge, Californication, or some other single in my face? There is one thing about new singles though from popular bands, they are always compared to either former works of the band, or to what all the other bands. In context of the band is this as good as whats on Blood, Sex, sugar, magik, no. So now tell me one POPULAR/CULTURALLY RELEVANT band that has produced an album within the past 18 months that has been groundbreaking or overshadowed any work done in the past by the band. U2... no Green day ... no Dave Matthews Band... No System of a Down... No Weezer... No Coldplay... No I could go on and on. No big band with a large fan base has crafted a great album in the past 2 or 3 years, and for music as a whole it goes back to like 1999 or 2000. So compare this song not to Under the Bridge or Californication, but to what you would be listening to if this album was never made, like My Chemical Romance(sigh). Oh, and don't throw some indie band no one's ever heard of in my face, I have local bands near me that sound great like Led Zeppelin, but are they reeally that great if only a few hundred or thousand people know them? No, so give this single a break it's good, at least it's not a whiny single.

Ok, come on. We all know this isn't their best song, but it's still pretty good. Every reference to "California" is actually to Dani, (and I know someone said this earlier) so its not really a state song but a girl song. And videos are videos, there were some funny parts and although bands have done this type of thing before I think their take on it was better than the others. And really, do you really think they spend their time watching other people's vid's? It's still creative.

Well I'm a huge fan of this band, I celebrate their entire collection of work, and Californication is probably the most important album of all time to me. I love this new song. I think it's important to realize that every chili peppers album represents a new direction for them, especially everything since mothers milk. It's awesome that a band that has been together for so long can continue to enjoy making music together the way they seem to. What they do comes from such a positive and deep place. Musicians like John Frusciante don't come along very often. To me this band is something completely seprate from the rest of rock. The new album might not be another Blood Sugar, but I dont think I want it to be, I'm excited to see what their doing now, and I'm psyched for the tour, let's hope The Mars Volta is along for the ride.

I wouldn't even listen to this song because the Chili Peppers haven't done anything remotely good since the last century. Ergo, I posit that the new album will be worse than the last album (purely because there's more tunes on it) and everyone with no musical taste will buy it because MTV and Q Magazine tell them to. Plus, RHCP blow live. I saw them 2 years ago when the Pixies supported them in Dublin and they were so bad some guy had to get real drunk and shit himself to overcome the disappointment.

For real. It's a great song. And those of you talking about a "state" song, this is from Wikipedia "The first single will be called "Dani California", according to Kiedis the same girl from songs By The Way ("Dani the girl") and Californication ("Teenage bride with a baby inside") supposedly representative of every girl he has ever known." The song sounds like it's about her death. And if you're stuck on the state thing then see it as representative of the death of "California" and that may put some symbolism into the dif bands in their vid.

The red hot chili peppers are a fuckin awesome band, this song may not be as good compared to their others, but its just that, its still good, but since their others were so awesome before, its like everyone expects them to top that. A pretty sweet song, not great, but THEY still are the best band ever

I thought the verse was a little boring. The chorus is pretty catchy and usual for a mainstream single, and the Frusciante solo at the end is pretty rocking. I listened to some bootlegs of other tracks that will be on Stadium though such as "Ready Made," "21st Century," "Desecration Smile" and "Tell me Baby" and they are all a hell lot better than the single. This album will be amazing I can tell. Don't let the single get you down, all singles are usually one of the, if not, the worst on the album so. Chilis are the best band to live and forever will be. Rock on! (By the way, go to http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/483684.html for bootlegs).

it might just be a coincidence, but all the really good bands that have said that their new album is the best theyve ever done, it always turns out to be the worst. it is the same for this. i listend to most of the album and all the songs are pretty much as bad as this. basically, they all sound really prentious. theyre new album is bad and i dont think they even know it.

I can see there is alot of discussions about the new singel "Dani California" though being a huge chili fan myself i do like this...not a particulary strong track, though good all the same, those shouldnt judge the chilis ona single, a single is a hook, and though some now think the album will not be a sucess you have to listen to it to find out so the chilis sucedded on what they wnated to achive...get you talking about them :]

The Chilis always release a radio friendly song, and while it may be good, it is never the best or worst. And even when it is one of the best, there are always others that are just as good.

Anyway, I have also heard some songs off the new album, and I can say the songs Tell Me Baby, Desecration Smile, and especially Readymade are amazing. To tell the truth, Readymade has the potential to be one of their best ever, but I can't quite decide if it is radio friendly at all.

I suggest if you own any of their albums and like it, get this one. It is truly sounding amazing, and Dani California is probably the worst i've heard so far (besides 21st Century).

Oh, and for the meaning behind the song, it is one of the most meaningful songs since Otherside IMO.

Anthony says Dani is a representation of every girl he has ever dated. The girl's full name is Dani California. When he says "California rest in peace," he is saying "Dani rest in peace." I remember in an interview he said every band member fell in love around the same time, and he found himself able to express emotions he never knew he could until now.

I think he is saying goodbye to all the crazy "Dani California" girls he ever dated, and is starting to settle down. The entire song is about him settling down.

dani cali might not be the best song the chilis have ever written but its certainly not the worst. you haters out there need to stop bein so negative about the world's greatest rock band just because their latest song isn't like "under the bridge" or "give it away". that youthful energy and imigination on "blood-sugar..." is something that can't be repeated. bands always can and will change their sound according to what they feel like doing and its up to them. personally i think they should bring back some of the energetic mother's milk funk-punk like "fire" and "stone cold bush" but i can accept their changes to their music. "save the population" was probably the nearest they they got to that recently, even if they chose to release "fortune faded" instead. and the video's not that bad. if you look back at the dodgy colours and lights on "breaking the girl" and "under the bridge", its actually quite good (though it'll never compete with the silver painted, desert jam in "give it away".) half of you pricks need to actually listen to some proper music before just hearing "dani cali" and saying that the chilis are overrated. JF is one of the best guitarists since hendrix and that's saying something. most of aren't real RHCP fans anyway because if you were you'd allow them to make whatever music they wanted without judging them on their video. don't judge a book by its cover. at least listen to the whole album before slating them.

P.S. whoever says the backstreet boys are better than the chilis should be shot i'm afraid. i mean, what type of crack have you been smoking?

To all those that say the song or the peppers are bland and sound like another fm band please tell us who else in the world sounds like them????? Their music is completl And as for the video, Arcadium is supposed to have a alot of old rock'nroll themes and so that mood may have inspired the band to do a history of rock'nroll as their video.
They really are one of the most talented bands on earth and as such are recognised by famous bands as well as ones with small fanbases, like The Mars Volta.

I am really pissed off that one song is actually making you doubt them, i mean cum on it is one song and i personally fink that is is brilliant! It is new, original, fresh and still manages to blend in the funky tones that they are so famous for in the first place!

I didnt like their previous first soingle "by the way" first time i heard it but that album was outstanding.

I personally think the song is good. If I'm being honest I prefer the old stuff but bands evolve and singles are always a bit more commercial than the entire album. As much as the old funk crazy stuff was brilliant, they won't make it anymore - They are a different band to what they were a few decades ago completely which is good because most people would harp on about how they never do anything new if they made album after album of funk/punk. Let them experiment with what they want to do and listen with an open mind rather than being overly critical of every lyric of guitar solo. Also don't judge the album before it's heard, the hit song is bound to be commercial and although its not my favourite by some way it's certainly not crap and I'd prefer it to half the manufactured 'punk' or 'emo' bands that are about at the moment with cool haircuts lol.

RHCP = One of the greatest existing bands out there. This song is a perfect lead single as it is going to grab attention before they slip into an album filled with their old funky sound. yeah, I agree with some earlier comments - it's a good song to release...ok so .. not the most genius of thier stuff but still. I have all their previous albums and I don't think that Dani California is shit at all, Geez compaired to half the stuff currently out, it's a nice change to hear them again, but they had to obviously use something more mainstream to bring people in. I have faith this will be one of their best albums, if not the best// Flea was saying how it's the best they've played and he's pretty confident so yeah..
It's to early to decide they've become shite.

I was really bored by their last album -- only two or three good tracks and the rest of the tracks were mopey drags -- which really doesn't suit them at all. I hope the new one is a return to the "Funky Monks"-era...

i mean it's a pretty typical rhcp song. i thought it was pretty good. the hook is good. the verses are usually how they go about things...that funk music feel to it. i like the solo at the end too, they always have this classic rock/funk feel to their music and i think thats why people don't like it. people now like all that fall out boy rock shit, which is a shame bc those punk rock bands with...few and slim exceptions have no talent at all. u dont see many bands pulling out solos anymore with their guitar that actually have some sound. dani california also, like everyone else has been saying is not about california. and california is one of their main themes, so yea your gonna see it a bit. why don't yall take a look at the lyrics and look at the meaning. i mean isnt that what your suppose to do with poetry?

its agood song. typical of their style-funk/classic rock feel to it, but thats what they do. its not a california song. its a song about a girl, about dani- which is an often theme by them. i guess for people who listen to punk rock which is ...practical no talent at all...with very few exceptions...it makes sense you wouldn't like something like this.

Dani California is a great f-cking song and the video is brilliant. I'm honestly confused at most of the reviews I've read. You people are retarded, rock is coming back in a big way so stop with your shit about this new single. Everytime a decent rock band is played on the radio we are being redeemed from the rap/pop/bubblegum shit that's polluting the airwaves. Keep in mind RHCP (along with other bands)are going to rid us of that trash.

Wow, I can't believe some of the pretentious remarks flying around this page. Are any of you out there with your songs on the radio? Do any of these horn tooters have a clue about how many rules are applied to putting out an album of this magnitude? You can't compare apples to oranges. You can't compare this band to another, nor to their own body of work. I think this album will have a lot to offer. I think many of the high horse riders need to take a peek into a mirror and ask theirselves... could I do this? If you can answer yes to that, then let the comments rip. If you can't pick up an instrument, sing, or write a song, find something else to critique. I come from the old school of if you don't have something nice to say, zip it. I have not heard the entire album. I have heard Dani California. I think the song is good. Better than 98% of what is circulating the airwaves. I am sure between two cd's there are many more songs that I will be turned on to more. Individually, each member of this band has contributed more to the music world than most. God bless John Frusciante as a soloist, and as a team player. Common, how many bassists can pull off what Flea does? There is only one RHCP. I think they have done amazing things in their lifetimes. I bet most of us would give up a kidney to be standing in their shoes. There are a lot of bands out there that suck all the way. This is not one of them. Bless them all... they are survivors, and although many times they aren't reinventing the wheel, they have so many stellar performances to date... who has the right to throw tomatoes at their work? Not me, and I doubt anyone else. Positivity is the key to happiness and the dream of world peace. Respect thy neighbor. If you were to sum up the meanings of all the books of religions... there are two words. BE NICE. Bless all the positive folks out there. I think RHCP will continue to offer great music to the world. Word to your mothers.

What are all you people nuts!!! If you want to bag this song you guys need to give up listening to music as you know nothing at all!!!! Last Dance with Mary Jane give me a break what next you will say it sounds like The Stones Sympathy for the Devil (for the non flowers, other words it doesn’t sound anything like Mary Jane) I am sure all you non believers will be having to swallow your stupid comments when the album is out.

wat i didn't like in video is how it looked like he was taking the piss outa kurt cobain, in one scene of the vid, which is out of order, im sure most of u guys r now gona say somethin negative bout him but he was a musical legend who changed the rock scene of the nineties, it just irratated me on the vid to do something like that, song was pretty gd though

I Think u guys don't know what your going on about, their band looks for new and inovative ways of expressing music you have to give them a chance and they will open your eyes to the bigger picture. If you don't like one of there songs you don't like them at all! They keep it real and lift up peoples souls I'd like to see you do that to someones life.....

I don't know what half of you critics are on about! the Chili's are one of (if not THE) best funk rock bands in existance! as a bass guitarist I worship the Chili's and Flea simply because of their skill, and as if any of u people that are slagging them off could do any better! I love the song, the bassline and the Chili's in general. So all you stupid tastles critics can start slagging them off when you can do better or if you prefer go off and listen to some retard like DJ Rankin or something. If any of you knew how difficult it was to play a good funk rhythm (i.e. the chili peppers) let alone compose one you would not be saying such harsh things. Did you know that in the world of rock and music a rock/funk fused style is the most difficult style to play/compose. If you disagree you must be one hell of a retard

thanks for reading/listening

I love HUUUGE RHCP fans that don't know anything about them.
1st of all the song is amazing
2nd of all "dani" isn't just in By The Way where she is "singing songs to him beneath the marquee" but is also the "teenage bride with a baby inside" in the song californication. "Dani" represents every girl he has ever known, and if your a RHCP fan then you would love this song.

Not the best RHCP song. Not bad, though. Not destined to be the classic that their first single,"City of Angels" is, from back in '92.

I've heard two songs and seen two videos, have they lost the wonderful creativity shown on the last two albums? I am extremely dissappointed. I was a huge fan.

And you do?

They've over done the cali thing IMO and it sounds like last dance with mary jane like you all said ...EVERYTHING else but that song on that album is great and beautyful.... to me dani cali is something their record label pushed because pop sells not beauty and art....And not only that but I bet the band feels the same way...you notice they are the only band from many eras that have lasted through all of them by making music of all different kinds....they are growing and changing all the time ...you cant expect them to stay the same with their socks on their cocks when theyr like 90

take a min and think about it ....also think about how your musical tastes have changed through the years ....so has theirs

RHCP are awesom. Yeah, it's a popy song, but the rest of the music isn't. They're fantastic.
