New Ryan Adams [Feat. Sheryl Crow] - "Two"
Although 29 and Jacksonville City Nights offered a respite of sorts, ever since Cold Roses, Ry's head has been Dead set; even his Town Hall stint and recent Rollins Show performance of Easy Tiger cut "Goodnight Rose" saw him appease his inner Jerry's kid. But the first studio taste from Tiger is a throw back to those Gold soundz that took him from your personal Heartbreaker to his enduring "next-big-thing" status.
The song's called "Two," though it sounds more like "2.0," as in "Harder Now That It's Over 2.0." Well, a little faster, and maybe the capo set up a few frets -- but it is built on that same roots-fave C-G chord base. Still, it's got a fancy guest vocal, it's got a great Ry vocal, and it's essentially Lesh-less. Nice start, Ry.

Transition complete: Ryan Adams is now finally a MOR neon-blue over black and white major label singer songwriter. No longer a brat and that was what set him apart. Fuck Gillian Welch: let's get SHERYL Crow to come in and do harmonies. And you know what, maybe lance armstrong could play the tambourine on the next album.

@ artmusiche: Guess you missed it when he did a duet with Norah Jones on "Dear John" for Jacksonville City Nights.
No longer a brat? He was called a MOR sell out way back when Gold came out too -- remember when he was Elton John's favorite musician? And that "Answering Bell" had Adam Duritz on backing vocals? Obviously not -- and then he went on to release six more records, each different than the one before it.

sorry haters
he still rocks
keep hating

but i LOVE heartbreaker, and can even get own with gold sometimes...and in case YOU missed it, "Answering Bell" is just "The Weight" with new lyrics/melody, that's some bratty shit that i respect

Ripping off The Band is some bratty shit that you respect? Did you respect P. Diddy's decision to call his reality show group "Da Band" also? Whatever, Ryan Adams kicks ass. Even if it means ripping off someone else each time out, he always tries new things with his albums. I'm all for it. Can't wait to hear the new album.

reminded me more of new york new york, which is also A-D

Because so many MOR artists do insanely good dead influenced jams. If you had seen any of his town hall shows, you would not be calling him MOR. Maybe the music is a bit mellower than it used to be. Hell, I saw him with Whiskeytown at Wetlands, and they turned their first album into a complete killer punk set. But it is still awesome. The guy is a brilliant songwriter. His throwaway songs are better than what 99 percent of today's artists put on their albums.
DJ Reggie would like to have a word with you.

And I forgot to mention, he has been friends with Crow for a while. He played with her at the ACL festival a few years back.

this song is harder now that it's over. but it's still good.

yeah definitely harks back to the Gold-era - sounds great, I like the hook. This is gonna be one of the best albums this year, I expect. And regarding backing vocals, really any female singer would sound basically the same for a song like that. Welch would have added that extra bit of raw country-ness, Crow adds that extra bit of mainstream appeal. Overall, who cares? The song's good.

Kevin Bacon, what the fuck?
I agree with Brent - Harder Now That It's Over, but still a Solid Fucking Song. I cannot wait for this album. Of course, I would buy any album he ever put out so I am biased.

I've always hated Ryan Adams. So i'm glad he finally made a song dueting with someone who can tarnish his street cred. It justifies the dislike i hold for his music.
By the way you may remember Sheryl Crow for her earlier duet with Kid Rock. I'm just sayin'

does it really matter? adams certainly doesn't give a damn what we all think.

it hurts the rebel in me to see an artist who at one time embraced old rebel rock attitude turn and do something so main stream...looks like jessica joffe is polishing him (appearance as well as sound and attitude) to become an adult contemporary hit...sad sad sad

Well, first of all, I'm only 32, I use a computer everyday, have multiple science degrees, and I'm a rabid but sadly snobish music fan. I still, however, had to look up MOR. Now that I have recieved my WIKI-answer, I know exactly why it was used to describe our old buddy Ryan. I listened to Whiskeytown albums (and loved everyone of them) before you people finished middle school...don't get mad, just listen. Heartbreaker was great. After that...it started to get really ugly. To truncate this criticism, and keep as many women from roaring back, I'll keep it short: Sheryl Crow? Give me a f'n break! No song could be written well enough to survive that.

No, I didn't use spellcheck for that last post. Be mad at me for hating sell out pretty boys, not for being a poor speller.

for crying outside, where do folks get off thinking that every artist has to meet your personal expectations?
let him do his thing, and stop telling him what his thing is.
then apply that to everyone else who's trying to make a living.
if you don't like their music, then turn it off. or get GarageBand and make your own.
Ryan Adams, Red Rocks, 2007 -- best show i've ever seen, period.
