I have to agree with robert, everything about this song blows. That bassline sounds like a theme from a Saturday morning cartoon. And what's with Julian's singing about 35 seconds in? I realize they want to try something different after making Is This It 2.0 aka Room on Fire but this is horrible and sounds nothing like the Strokes that I knew.

What kind of freaks dont like saturday morning cartoons?? who are you people???

the song is not bad --- and this is different for the strokers (at least for part of the tune you actually hear the singer's voice....i mean like, his human voice, not the Ned-Voice-Box he's been using to get famous and avoid criticism on his otherwise shitty voice.....)

I'm not sure what I think of that on the the first listen. It kind of sounds like The Strokes covering a Franz track. It doesn't really do much and it needs a fucking hook. But I still kind of like it...

I like it. Yeah, it's kind of harsh at first, but the payoff at :50 or so where they break into the hook makes for some nice interplay. It's just one song, anyway, so I think it's a bit soon to be doing any bandwagon jumping (on or off).

Not bad, though not, at least upon my initial listen, really that great. My knee-jerk reaction, upon hearing the opening bass riff was "ok... they've stopped ripping off Television and the Cars and moved on to ripping off the Cramps."

I just don't know yet. I imagine it is going to take a bunch of listens to get use to this (dare I say) progression

Actually, I think it's only a progression in that it differs greatly from the first two albums... it's going to be hard to top "is this it?"

One of the best bands of our time is trying really hard to shed the bagage of being really cool, and having people write comments about them on the internets.

Dig:
somebody hung up the phone, and julian sounds good.

new semigloss production

prominent bassline (enter sandman speed up?)

tempo changes, ala Franz

same lyrical theme: detached romanticism, mythic cool

It's not the instant indie dance party jam of 12:51, or the instant trip to the basement to check out dad's records of "Last Night," but let's give it some time. at least a few more hours.

It's . . . Shiv said above "It kind of sounds like The Strokes covering a Franz track" and I have to kindof agree (and by a crazy coincidence Winamp randomly popped up the daft punk remix of "Take Me Out" immediately after the song ended, though that's certainly not the Franz song that it's most like) . . . I'm a bit torn, but it shows a kind of eclectic potential, makes me think that the new album, well . . .

Actually, it leaves me scratching my head as to what the new album might be like. But that's a good thing, from a marketing perspective, 'cause now I'm damn curious. The song itself seems slightly schizophrenic, and my response is likewise. Not sure at all how this song will sit after stewing for a few days . . . nice to know that The Strokes are experimenting, though.

What the...!?
I've been reading the commenst and... "Batman Theme"? "Peter Gunn Theme" (I would rather mention B-52's' "Planet Claire" bass riff wich has an obvious Peter Gunn rip-off with an edge)?
And then coparisons to Franz Ferdinand? QOTSA? System od a Down??? Cramps??? "Enter Sandman"???
Even Prodigy's "Hot Ride"???
Definitely whatever The Strokes do we will judge them with comments based in our own knowedge... I'm sure they listen and are more influenced by bands a little older that the Ferdinands or Prodigy.

My opinion: this song is a filler. They had fillers in the first two records, why leak the lead single? Blur did something alike when they released "Don't bomb when you are the bomb" as a sample for the "new" sound of their latest "Think Tank"...

Well. Hmmm. Bass line is catchy, and I agree, I heard a Franz-like inflection in the opening second of the vocals. Not unpleasant and exciting to hear something new.

I envision this as a "Track 9" out of 11 tracks and not really as the first single to be released, per se.

The end of the song sounds more like "The Strokes" we "know & love" than the entire first half of the song.

ya know what, everyone loves to hate the Strokes way too much.
first people complain that the Is This It didn't sound as "raw" as the Modern Age EP.
then they complained that Room on Fire was like Is This It pt. 2 (which it clearly wasn't... there were new musical elements and textures brought into the sound, a la synth style guitars, etc.)
now this. they completely switch their sound around, and of course, everyone hates it (or should i say, claims to hate it).
you people are so bitter that it disgusts me. they're not aiming to be Radiohead or the Arcade Fire or some other pretentious cerebral music. the Strokes are simple, straighforward rock n roll. take it for what it is and quit over-judging every shred of music that they put out.

This song is pretty damn good. I see alot of people on here commenting that they dont like it, or even hate it. But by the intelligence of their arguments, those people just dont like good music. Strokes covering Franz Ferdinand? Franz Ferdinand is a strokes cover band, so that would be like The Strokes covering the Strokes. Some other dude said "it sounds like theyve been listening to Queens of the Stone Age". Ummmmmm, okay dude.

This song is tough, i love the new production. It took me a couple listens to get into, but then again so has every one of my favorite all time albums.

i dont get it either...
for once every group member is stepping outside or maybe even inside his covert comfort zone and is playing/singing out of his balls and everyone hates it. every truly GREAT band has to step up his music periodically in their careers. its called maturation. some do it well and some do it awefully (weezers new album is an example of it, infact its the most uninspired immature album from an experienced group i've ever heard) if you want lounge music i can give you the names of a couple great electronica groups. this is rock. personally i would be sick to hear any more boop-de-boop-doo-boop-boop from nikolai, the bands bassist and i think the distortion is perfect for the mood this song is trying to set. slight reverb is icing on the cake. comparisons to franz ferdinand and queens of the stone age are a joke. and oh by the way, i absolutely hate how EVERYTHING is a knockoff...but then again we're talking about really inspired music appreciators here :-p tempo changes in all kinds of music are nothing new guys, like as in centuries old. you guys really make me laugh

eh, the song is all right for me.. nothing spectacular though. reminds me of how pissed I was to hear "beverly hills" for the first time.. knowing it was Weezer's first "single". but, for me, in the end it was the worst song on the album and overall I found the album to be a quality release.

keep in mind that the singles are the songs with the most commercial/general/radio appeal, not the best of the album.

high hopes for the rest of it :D

Juice Box sounds like a 3rd rate stock 'thrash-metal' riff that every band in the SF Bay Area was doing from 87'-89'. Christ, any 15 year old metal dude with a peavey amp, ProCo Rat and Jackson clone guitar could produce this riff in his sleep.

Then the song slides into the 'major progression' that sounds like an outake from an 80's Rush album.

The produciton value is suspect, the song writing is not there and the lyrics are flat out stupid.

The Jokes, I mean Stokes can't even reinvent themselves with any gravitas. Once again, all the access to coke, hot sluts and recording industry blow hards does not me you can WRITE A SONG!

I always thought that the secret ingredient to The Strokes recipe for cool, was their innocence, y'know? Yeah, they're decadent and jaded, but you come away from their albums feeling like, at their core, they believe in love and sincerity. It's always a surprise when they--the arbiters of "cool"--opt for a cheesy video game reference. Even when the lyrics come off trite, it makes you grin and think: just some NYC kids, gettin' their kicks. This new track is different, which is important for the guys this time around. The base line reminds me of Peter Gunn and Spy Hunter. Overall, the track sounds like a mash-up of Nine Black Alps and The Murder City Devils with Jim Morrison up front. I think it will take this track a little bit of time to catch on, because it truly is different, but it'll catch on in a big way. I also think it's probably not reflective of the rest of the album. Mark my words, this is going to have a real effect on the direction of American pop. Kids, I think, are tired of Franz's disco (nobody's listening to that new one stateside), and they definitely weren't gonna' go for The Strokes 3.0. Cool track.

it took them two years to make this? it's terrible.

this kind of stuff always baffles me, because it's not like they're doing the anti-pop thing - like so many people have pointed out they are essentially a pop band - yet there is absolutely nothing endearing/catchy/interesting/danceable about this song. it sounds lazy and is frustratingly non-catchy. how can they run out of ideas so fast? i seriously think every other song they've done (even that "post modern girls" song with regina spektor, a freaking b-side for gods sake) is better than this. and it's a single?

and this is never a good sign; my 12-year-old bro (who worships ac/dc, led zep and the hives... he's still learning) said this is his favourite strokes song by far.

I think the first single from the stokes.. juce box.. is the worst that ive heard so far from the band.. but i dont give hopes off yet.. lets see whats on the rest of the album in 2006. Im a huge The Strokes fan.. so lets not give up hopes.. everyone makes a bad single once anyway..
