this is great i'm such a fan of the strokes and this new one is so much better than juicebox it is a change to their old stuff but still has the same flair as the old stuff

Yeah, I almost wonder if someone at the label was like, "fuck, who leaked the shitty song?" and put this one out there to neutralize it.

Is it sad that I am almost relieved to hear that the strokes can still hang? PS is it just me or is there a serious dull in new music, not even pitchfork is giving me what I need.

does anybody else agree with me in that the 2 tracks from the new Strokes album sound empty and cheap in comparison to their previous work on Room on Fire and Is This It? not only do the songs not have the same catchy drive but they also have weak lyrics

I'm with Mike above on the new tracks. The first 2 LPs each had about 8 songs better than both of the new leaked ones--not a good sign going forward. The drums & guitars have definitely been Protools'd up and Julian's missing the mark. Too bad.

And the Carl Barat record will be better than Babyshambles'. Choose your side now.

These new Strokes songs demand several listens but are ultimately pleasurable in a new and different way. I think I kinda like "juicebox", but know for sure that I like this new other one. It reminds me of the adjustment between weezer blue and pinkerton (reminding me that "blue" was produced by ric ocasek, who julian apparently sounds like in the new song).
Any good new album is initially challenging and then sweetly familiar and exciting. This is what I'm getting from the new songs. I look forward to having some nice benevolent sleazebag (and i mean that in a good way) leak the rest of the tracks as I just can't wait until Jan '06 for more.

This song is really catchy. Still has the strokes sound but nicely evolved. But what's with Julian's last minute stroke of melody with each song that's been released? It's such a tease. I wish he was singing the parts throughout.

about a week ago, when juicebox leaked, the record company here in australia sent the released version to JJJ, our publicly owned youth-station, but they accidentaly sent this track instead..it was played a few times before and after the mistake was realised, although the record company was begging them to stop playing it...so Australia finally gets something first!!!

This track is completely mundane. Once again we are going to be comparing everything to the olden days.

Well, I liked it. It's nothing ground-breaking and it has similar elements of old styles, but I'll keep spinning it. What I've found is that I tend to like the albums as a whole instead of individual tracks. If the album sounds disjointed with failed attempts, then it'll be worrisome. I've got my $12 ready to spend, though.

Everyone hated Juicebox? I don't know, it really really grew on me. I actually didn't like it much at all to begin with, especially how oddly cheap it felt, but it lodged in my brain, parts of it begging to be played, and so I would listen to it again, and again, and again . . . and then suddenly I found myself really enjoying it. By comparison, this new song is quite forgettable . . . but, then again, maybe I shouldn't be judging it yet (though it isn't odd enough to really warrant too much hope there, but I guess it could still grow nonetheless).

Some people think they're always right
Others are quiet and uptight
Others they seem so very nice nice nice nice, oh-oh
In fact, they might feel sad and wrong, oh no
_____
_____
Twenty ways to see the world, oh-oh
And twenty ways to start a fight

i just hope this will be the only crappy cd they bring out, we need that old vintage new york deuce bag feel.

you only live once is a bit more to my liking. I mean I think I know what they were thinking when releasing juicebox first, going for that whole shock and aww feeling. But they have to realize the reason why everyone even likes them in the firs place was because their music seemed so "effortlessly cool". And it was really working them, I mean they pulled it off while making music that really sounds great. So, to sum it up if it isn't broke then don't fix it!

I can't believe how many haters there are! If you don't like it, you don't like rock n roll. I can't understand why everyone wants a repeat of the first two albums... And that someone would mention that it sounds cheap! haha, my friend, you know nothing about music, these two songs have more production value that thier first two albums put together. I like that the new stuff has glimpses of influences unheard on the older stuff.
What we've got people is a lose lose situation. Most critics would say that their first two cd's sounded too much alike, and the casual fan will say thier new one sounds too different, so what do you do?? You do what the strokes are doing, and just putting out a tremendous record.
YO! MTV fans!!! Shut the fuck up, listen to some real rock before reviewing The Strokes.

All you people look for 'is this it' switch to track no. 5, someday, and experience a REAL catchy and cool tune. Why are you guys so desperately hanging on to your 'trust' in the Strokes, even when they're making crappy music? i do hope that they catch up with their old level again, but listen to Mando Diao for the time being, they DO rock at the moment! hasta luego!

Bullfighter I agree. Come on now, people! They're trying to evolutionize their sound! I for one am glad their taking a different approach to this album, that's part of being creative, you know, new ideas?! I'm also happy at the fact that I can hear Julian's voice more upfront now. With some of their old stuff, I got frustrated when I could barely hear his voice above the guitars.

Oh and random comment about what someone said about Babyshambles/Carl Barat... What do you guys think of Carl's new band Dirty Pretty Things?

I love the new strokes song, i think its a transition they were going through, and to lessen the blow, they put out one of their most radical songs as their first relaese. I dont think its any accident that the strokes let the song " you only live once" out after, juicebox came out. For any artist its really hard to let the baby youve been holding onto, go, especially when it has been so celebrated and recognized as art, and nuevo. "Some people think theyre always right, others are quiet and uptight" you listen to the album and decide.

I am one of few who loved the first album AND the second album equally. The first I consider "the party album" and the second "the evening album". It's a simple concept but one that helped me to appreciate the intentions of both records.

Juicebox was and is gorgeous. The first 10 seconds were a shocker! I thought, "Is this The Strokes?". As soon as Julian's iconic voice kicked in...it's an absolute delight.

You Only Live Once reminds me of Under Control. Mellow in its rock sound. I can always imagine The Strokes playing at sunset on a Mediterranean Beach, nobody packed up close to the stage but people just soaking up the sound and taking in the sea.

They've been faultless for me so far. To me, they are everything The Libertines weren't. Style and substance, lots of both. The Strokes are the only pop-rock band for me.
