New Sufjan Stevens - "Saul Bellow"

Get in solid walls with the know-it-alls / Get in trouble with Saul Bellow...

You heard "Dear Mr. Supercomputer" and "The Henney Buggy Band"; Suf's banjo-led meditation on the Augie March author is more subdued, but equally inspiring. And these are Illinois OUTTAKES?! Makes us wish Seven Swans had a leftovers LP.

Sufjan Stevens - "Saul Bellow" (MP3 Link Removed)

No Katrina Kerns on the cut, but that's non-baby-mama Rosie Thomas on back-up vox.

sufjan does what he does really well, but all of shit is starting to blur together BADLY.

Yeah, it's really blurring together. This sounds very similar to his stuff on Illinoise. It's almost like he recorded IT AS IF HE WAS GOING TO PUT IT ON HIS LAST ALBUM.

Nah Sufjan still has the talent, and he is releasing an album of all the songs that didn't make it onto Illionois - called the Avalanche. But yeah, I do prefer his "Seven Swans" days - the banjo could get a little toooo much but I reckon he needs to find a middle ground between the banjo-laden stuff and the piano/choir music in Michigan and Illinois. Michigan almost achieved that actually.

If Sufjan wants to do a b-sides and outtakes comp, that's fine, but it would be nice if he had a broader scope, i.e. putting older material and newer together. That way he could be more selective (which I guess isn't the point) and we could see his development over the years.

Katrina is good, but Shara is actually a much much better singer

this song is just great.
i don't feel the blurring together. he's got a very wide variety of music, especially from this album and its outtakes.
i am very excited about all of this.

Oh Soupjam! Will you ever learn?

Doesn't take too much to impress the hipsters these days I guess...

Keep poopin' it out Soupjam!

what are you guys talking about? you want to see development? listen (for once) to all of sufjan's music--from enjoy your rabbit to illinois--then tell me we haven't had a chance to see his development. his music is the most amazingly complex and varied music out there right now. you should be thankful that we finally have a musician who is releasing albums every year and setting such huge goals for himself (illinois was supposed to be a double album consisting of some 50 songs! i wonder why the avalanche [the rest of the illinois album] sounds familiar?).

I think it stands to Sufjan that he didn't rewrite the songs about another state just to get on with the project, but kept them the way they came to him. It's impressive that he doesn't seem to worry about losing his inspiration.

I like it. Especially when it breaks up into that great droney clapping part towards the end. Thanks again!

It's a great song. I don't see how you can say it "blends in" with the rest of his work. This doesn't sound like anything he's released so far, except at the most basic of levels. And like many people have pointed out, it's a fucking Illinois outtakes album, so of course it's going to remain in that vein.

Good stuff. I wish every artist had outtakes this good.

"Doesn't take too much to impress the hipsters these days I guess..."

Yeah right, it's the hipsters who loved Sufjan a year ago and now take every opportunity via blogging and posting to bag on him.

Hipsters of the world, don't you get tired of having to hate everything five minutes after you loved it?

Soooooooooooo over. Give him six months and he'll be guest DJ-ing at Misshapes.

Ok first even if he is just for the sake of arguement "sooooo over" as you say, the dude has released (counting the avalanche coming up) SIX albums in six years! Six albums!(not counting his three christmas albums) Thats more then alot of highly respected musicians produce in their entire musical career's. And should he chose to stop making music, which is by the way was just a fucking spun out of control hobbie for him, the last thing he'll be doing is guest "Dj-ing at Misshapes." He'll probably be writing the next great American novel, seeing that he has a fucking masters degree in writing, and fiction writing was his intended profession. Or maybe he'll be teaching your stupid ass how to write, because he also teaches writing. Or maybe he'll be running his record label, cause yeah, he does that too. The guy has more talent, skills and experience then is even fair to normal people.

i cant believe how good this is. to those who missed it, search the internet until you find some website who still has the mp3 up. quite frankly, i wasnt a big fan of illinois. it was no michigan or seven swans. but this song, and 'springfield' (also floating around around the internet, find it) are a couple of the best songs ive heard (not just by sufjan, but by anyone).
